Because if they don’t play, we’d have about 8 kids on the team. Not being super critical, but I wonder sometimes what planet some of you coach on sometimes. So if only 8 kids' parents make it to a parent meeting..why have the meeting? That is my point. Either the meeting is important, or it isn't. For the same reason that we have Back to School Night.

That wouldn't be realistic for us.....and I assume many others I don't necessarily agree. If not a parent meeting..a signed parent contract for those that can't make it. Perhaps a DVD explaining it etc. Again, if it is important enough to ask/mandate the parents who are going to show up to go...it is important enough for all. If not, well football isn't required. Or no parent meeting at all. Either works. When I was coaching youth ball, I had a parent's meeting every year. And of course, most of the parents who attended were the parents you weren't going to have to worry about. For the parents who chose to not attend (many of whom are complete dopes), I simply emailed the team rules and procedures to them along with a note saying that they were responsible for knowing them and if they had any questions or concerns about the rules they needed to contact me. And if there ever was an issue during the season, I would simply remind the parent to review our rules and procedures.

"Coach, I can't be at practice today, I got stung by like 50 yellow jackets." Actual quote via text. "_______ and _______ will not be at the varsity game Friday or the jv game Saturday. We will be taking a family trip to the Nascar race." Not an exact quote but pretty close. Had a kid miss a Friday game and a JV Monday game because his dad took him to a lineman convention. Not like a football lineman, like an electric lineman. Kid’s a 14 year old freshman. Those ComEd guys make big bucks!

along the same lines, what's the deal with kids that get hurt just not showing up anymore? I'm pretty sure that until recently when a kid got hurt and couldn't play, he still showed up to practice and games. helped out where he could, and was around the team here lately at two different schools i've been at a kid gets hurt and we never see the kid again, they just hang out in the training room until they are cleared to participate, and forget showing up to games. I asked one and looked at me like I asked him the dumbest question in the world "why would I come to the game if I can't play?" weird At our first team meeting before practice started we told kids that even if they were injured and could not practice they were expected to be at practice (much less game).
If they weren't, I would assume they quit, although that never happened that I can remember.
You're either a part of the team, or you're not.
I hear you...I really do. But some times, having those kids around is a huge pain in the neck because it just isn't worth the grabass. We used to practice on a field that had a bunch of walnut trees along the side. The walnuts would fall of the trees and lay in piles on the practice field. So, when we would have a fairly big MASH unit of hurt kids who were messing around, I would have to yell over at them, "Hey you brokedicks (I had just got out of the Army ), go pick up some walnuts!

Or conferences. Ours start tomorrow. I will say the same thing approximately 125 times over the next day and half. I will be ready to shoot myself in the face by noon on Friday!

You seemed to be very sure of your situations. One could just figure you knew In all seriousness, I obviously wasn't referring to a specific instance, but a general situation.

My last job would have been the best/final job had we not changed principals 4 times in 5 years and lost 60 kids off an enrollment of 240. Had it stayed the same demographics/leadership wise as 2013, I would have stayed there indefinitely.

We had a kid miss practice because " the sets were too good to come to practice"...
What are "sets"?
Sets of waves...

We have guy on the team now who hasn't dressed in a month even though he's perfectly healthy. He missed a practice with no notification. That would have been his second unexcused practice, which would have been a half game suspension. His story was that he had to go to the doctor for some emergency. The HC said that that was fine but that he needed a note from the doctor, a receipt, anything. We told him to call the doctor and ask him to fax something over. The kid insists that his mom won't do it so he's still in street clothes. He comes to practice every day but can't dress.

We have a kid that showed up (limping) to practice two weeks ago and said, "I can't play, doc says I tore my groin muscle." Three days later he won the school's dance competition on spirit day. He's still unable to play football, though.

So true. Those meetings tend to be "preaching to the choir" kind of meetings. Then when you have an issue in-season with a parent and ask them "did you come to the meeting?" The answer is always "no." Why is the kid playing if the parent did not attend the parent meeting? I realize it is tough, but if the meeting was important enough to have, it is important enough to hold kids out until they attend the meeting or meet with coaches/sign a contract type thing Are you going to hold them out because the parent doesn't work the concession stand? Hold them out because the parent doesn't come to the game? Kids are responsible for their own actions, not their parents.

However, he was able to run with another player on his back the full length of the Gym and back for relay races at the Homecoming Rally.

Once had a player miss 2 practices cause he was out in the yard peeing and his dog jumped up and bit his junk! Had to be taken to the hospital. This was verified by his mother. Never looked at that kid again without thinking about it.
