Sorry to hot and too lazy to search for a thread on this already so... "Why weren't you at school and practice yesterday?" "My cat got neutered and my step father is allergic to cats so I had to stay home and hold the cat all day"

One of my personal favorites was- My brother needed shoes and my mom needed me to go to help pick them out.
OR
Adam had to go the Dr today. Doc says he’s got the die-uh-beetus. He should be over it by Monday though.

I mean, the logic is right there in front of you...how dare you be so insensitive I know. We're a$$holes I guess... It is always our fault. Had a JV kid get "hurt" last Monday in a JV game. Mom yelled at me because I asked why he wasn't at practice on Tuesday when he had a "really badly bruised hand".

I had one just yesterday...Starting RT gets hurt week 1 and is out weeks 2 and 3. Starts week 4, does not start week 5 because he missed Tuesday practice and Wednesday practice he chooses to leave practice extremely early to walk with ROTC in the Homecoming parade. It gets better...
We wanted to give him another shot this week because one of OL just isn't getting any better and keeps grading out horribly. We tell him Monday if he has a good week he might be starting this week. He doesn't show up yesterday because he has to go "shoe shopping." Oh I love coaching kids with poor support systems in an inner city!!

Last season I had a sr. starting DB (4.5- 40 kids) with his mother come up 3 days before our first game and say "She's taking me to Africa" I was like...... "don't you need shots for that?" "Yeah she broke the news to me yesterday mid-doctors appointment"

Had a kid quit wrestling one year tell me, "Coach, I'm quitting the team so I can get better for next season" Had a kid tell me that was why he wasn’t playing just this year. Freshman too. I’m getting too old to fight that level of stupid.

I love it (sarcasm) when I overhear a kid say " I'm not going all out cuz need to save my energy for Friday night"
If walk through makes you tired, you might have a problem...

How about this one, had a kid who didn't play last year and probably would have started this season for us SOMEWHERE in a skill position. He told me; A. he wants to concentrate on basketball because that is where his future is (5'8 and averaged 5 ppg as a sophomore) but the kicker was B. he said he just likes to watch from the stands...what sort of competitive athlete likes to JUST watch from the stands? Change the culture!

Kid not giving much effort. 1 rep away from being fired as a starter...
Coach - "Smith! What...in the heck is your problem? Your effort is awful"
Player - "My shoulder hurts"
Coach - "What?"
Player - "My shoulder hurts. Where I got my tattoo" (shows coach upper arm tattoo. Still can't figure out what the hell the tattoo is)
Coach - "I don't care if your shoulder hurts. That's a self inflicted wound. It's not like you're injured. And why...did you get a tattoo during the season?"
Player - "It's the only time they could get me in"
WTF? "It's the only time they could get me in?"
We live in a small town. If there is a line for tattoos...I must be missing out on something.

I’m getting too old to fight that level of stupid. I just turned to my assistant and asked if he really said that. Had a kid miss a tournament because he was releasing a rap album that day (5'2, 113 lb red haired kid from a pretty well off family). Also had a kid have his parent call me on a Friday night before our region tournament to ask if it was mandatory because he wanted to go play Magic the Gathering at the local comic shop all day that Saturday. Really amazing I made it 4 years at that school. I have many more stories.

Some years back we're in the middle of practice when a non-football playing kid walks up onto the field and says something to one of my players. My player has a shocked look on his face and they start jogging off the field together. I holler at him, "What's wrong with you, where are you going??" Kid turns around, jogs backwards and says, "It's opening day of quail season." I told him, "If you leave for the quail opener you're off this team." He called my bluff, said, "Okay" and they broke into a sprint. He returned his gear a few days later. To make it even crazier he came back the following year to play and was very good. He went on to play at a D2 school.

Two of them:
"My dad bought a bulldog puppy and I'm going up to the airport to pick him up and play with him tonight." (The Thursday before our big rival game).
"I need to stay home to study for the ACTs, I won't be at practice the rest of the week." (It was September and he wasn't taking the ACTs until February.)

One of my favorite excuses all time is "Come on coach, its not a game, its only practice." Was it Allen Iverson? The kid thinks he's Iverson. Same kid also told me the fumble he had in the game last week didn't really matter because we were winning and going to win the game anyways. Beyond frustrating.

Had a Sr captain in wrestling tell me he wasn’t going to a Saturday tournament on Friday because he was taking the ACT for the 4th time in an attempt to get into West Point. I asked him what score he needed to get in. He said like a 28. I asked what he had gotten the other 3 times. He said a 22 was his highest. I was then an a-hole because I told him he was wasting his time because he wasn’t going to raise his score that much. Mommy called in to complain that I was “ruining” his dreams and career.

I'm watching a sixth grader in my shop class sanding his project, Except he is sand, pause, sand, pause, with each pause being like 10 seconds. I asked him why he was "Working so hard." "I have a Lacrosse game tonight and my coach said not to exert myself in school today!"

We had a kid not show one morning for a track meet. We call his house and he answers the phone. He was not there due to the Police raiding his house and arresting his brother earlier in the morning. He also could not find his uniform because the cops tossed his room looking for stuff. So we sent a kid to go get him and got another uniform and he ran that day.

Had TWO different kids, both Frosh, quit their sport, one football and one wrestling. Both had the same excuse. They didn't have enough time to go driving around in their cars.....But they might come out the next year. Shockingly, (sarcasm) neither ever played sports again.
Also had a kid tell me once that "football was his life". Quit the next year mid Season to make money. Short order cook at a burger joint. It's about 12 yrs later now and he STILL works there. Great career move.
One of the funniest was a kid who missed practice. HC asked him the next day where he was. He goes into this rant about how his boss called and told hm he needed hm right after school to do this and that and all this other stuff and then "he made me run fryer number five!!!! Have you ever had to run fryer number Five?" Stifling laughter the HC informed him that no, he hadn't ever run fryer number five, but that he (the kid) was to come to practice from now on.

Would have been very interesting to see how he handled the nomination process to the Point...even better, how he would have handled life had he accepted an appointment.

Kind of a different story here, trying to talk a kid into coming out, good athlete, by our school's standard. Asked him if he's coming out and he says no, I ask why and he says he's a receiver and we don't throw it enough for him. So I asked him how many catches he made last year (not playing), he says none and I say I guess you're not a receiver after all, I guarantee you'll have more catches next year for us. We both smiled, Didn't come out.

I was new to a program and was driving two half borthers home (same age) during the first month. One kid (total stud) was just ruled state ineligible. He was the in the same classes as all the other kids since middle school. I asked him what happened. At 15 he was selling drugs, found out his uncle was stealing from him. Confronted his uncle, his uncle attacked him. He stabbed and killed his uncle. Spent 2.5 yrs in juvie Definitely an excuse
