We have the big sub shortage too, but instead of doing what they do to you, they take away planning time from various teachers all day long to cover and the district pockets the sub pay. So we lose planning time, pick up an additional class to teach, and don't get a thing for it. I've been there before. There's nothing like rolling into work with stuff you need to get done during planning to prep for the next class because you were out until 10PM coaching a JV game the night before, only to be told you're going to babysit the shop class and try to keep them from burning the building down or shooting each other with nail guns.

Subs that don't do anything that you wanted them to It drives you nuts. Here's the worst that I ever had: It was an Honors history class, a good group. It was later in the year so they were trained and knew that if I showed a video there would be a quiz when I got back. The sub watched a few minutes of the video, said that it was boring and, despite the protests of the kids, went home and brought in her own video, "Mahogany", a Diana Ross film about a fashion designer. The next day when I walked in they rushed me, begging and pleading that the'd told her that I'd give them a quiz. I believed them and, since the video was a good supplement but not critical, moved on. Didn't happen to me but we had a sub at my old school that kicked his feet up and slept most of the day. He happened to have been the new HC they hired with no coaching experience. That was the worst year of coaching I have ever had

Subs that don't do anything that you wanted them to My wife, a 3rd grade teacher, had a sub have the kids color. All day. 8:10am-3pm. Coloring. She was super happy. Had what I wanted my sub to do yesterday. Instead, she had the kids right down 4 definitions from the book and then they sat around the rest of the period.

We have a big sub shortage in our area, as im sure most of you do as well. Whenever a job is not picked up by a sub, they send the class out to me. They sit in the bleachers while I try and run my class. It happens at least once a week. Its dumb, but I get the sub pay, so I really dont mind it at all. It can get fairly lucrative towards the end of each semester. What gets me, tho, is when the teachers come back to school and ask why I didnt cover the material that was left in the sub folder. And it isn't that they ask, its the sighing, groaning, and rolling of the eyes to my face. They are the same hens and busybodies mentioned about, they live in their own little bubble, completely unaware of what goes on around them. We have the big sub shortage too, but instead of doing what they do to you, they take away planning time from various teachers all day long to cover and the district pockets the sub pay. So we lose planning time, pick up an additional class to teach, and don't get a thing for it. Lol... Yeah, I worked in a district where they pulled that chit with us. The union stepped in and told the district that teachers WOULD NOT be covering each other's classrooms during their prep if they weren't paid for it. The administration wanted to just tack it onto our PTO but that'd be bullchit seeing as they can deny the use of that PTO. It turned into a nightmare for the clerk as she had to tack on an extra $10 for every hour we subbed for another teacher during our prep.

Subs that don't do anything that you wanted them to My favorites are the subs who don't do anything that you wanted them to do, but also do things that you don't want them to do. I came back one day to find a nice little note on my desk from a sub about how she'd cleaned the room with my students, including throwing away a big stack of student work that hadn't been graded and a bunch of materials I'd spent hours printing and setting up for my big observation, which was to be that day during first period. Needless to say, I was furious. Thankfully the principal let me reschedule that observation. The packets I'd left for the kids to do? She had never even passed those out because the kids said they didn't want to do them. I also had one who went to her car for 2 hours to smoke and pop pills while the kids she was supposed to be watching tore my room apart. Needless to say, she was put on the "do not call" list.

I'll be gone tomorrow and I am leaving all of my classes with a YouTube video to watch. They have to write down 40 things they learned for a quiz grade. There's no way in hell that I can have a sub try to teach the math we're doing right now.... It'll be a blood bath.

I believe them. He's fallen asleep during coaching staff meetings before too.

I mean, I subbed for two years. It's the easiest job on the planet. Teacher writes down what they want done, you do it.
I don't make subs do much more than hand out worksheets because you never know what you're going to get, but I've had people not even do that.

I don't give my sub any real teaching to do or a movie. I just leave a ton of work they can't possibley finish and tell them I'm taking it up for a grade when I get back. I'll just give them a daily grade when I come back if they did it or not. I do that in hopes they will have so much to do hopefully the sub will keep them halfway quiet so the principal doesn't have to come to my room while I'm out.

Every time I have a sub I have the kids watch a Mythbusters episode... Which now that I think about it really isn't much different than when I am there...

I couldn't imagine asking a sub to teach something or present a lesson. They get a packet of worksheets which deal with something we have already gone over and discussed and so much work that they have to work non stop and stay quiet to have a chance to get it done. I don't even look at it when I return other that to pick it up and look at the names to make sure they made a real attempt at it, if a substantial amount was complete full credit lets move on to the next day.

Word searches are the ultimate pacifier and are my go-to lesson for the sub. Expecting any serious rigor or critical thinking to take place with a sub is nothing short of setting the class up for failure...

Our school does that too. As previously stated, we actually have a good pool of subs currently but even then there are two I ask for specifically if they aren't already scheduled somewhere on that certain day.

Subs definitely make me rage. We have a shortage so I get pulled all of the time to cover a class. I don't complain because my coworkers are good at leaving something that doesn't make me have much to do, and it's $25 if you cover an hour. Easy money.
I have a ton of sub stories. We have one that looks like Jesus and eats Doritos all day like it's his job. Kids have appropriately named him Doritos Christ.
I teach Spanish. One sub speaks Spanish, but only teaches them inappropriate slang so they're always saying some funny stuff after a day with him.
There is the one who comes in the room raging at kids and yells at them (as in screams at them) for any little thing she doesn't like. The other day I was making copies and she had a kid out in the hall 3 different times for 3 different reasons. First he asked to use the bathroom. Then he forgot his agenda in the bathroom and asked to go get it again. Then he asked another kid in the class what they were supposed to be working on (he apparently missed the math assignment during one of his bathroom trips).

I make sure that there aren't sub horror stories when I get back. None of the subs I have had this year can teach math above the Pre-Algebra level so it's a complete waste to leave any real work. It turns into the beaches of Normandy in a hurry if I do. I get a two page long sub note b-tching about the kids not understanding anything along with a long list of kids to discipline. Screw that.
I subbed for two straight years and had a good time watching other subs fall apart. Kind of like watching a train wreck. There were four kindergarten teachers gone from a school one day (they had a workshop) and one of the four subs just fell apart in the middle of the day. I escorted my class out for lunch recess and her class came tearing down the hall after us like a bunch of gremlins. She gets to the door and just breaks down in front of me; sobbing hysterically..
"They're.... Such... Little... Chits...." (sob...sob..sob..)
I got back to my room and couldn't stop laughing.

Told the district I was working in to not bother calling me back for any grade level below 4th.

I just thought it was a friggin' riot. This woman had been broken by fifteen,5 years olds in the space of three hours. She wasn't young either; I bet she was in her mid 30's.

I'd rather have a fork jabbed in my eye than spend that much time with little kids.
Everybody is different.
One of my former assistants and one of my former players are coaches who teach Special Ed, and are very good at it.
My wife (see Avatar picture at left) has been an Instructional Aide in an Early Elementary "Moderately" (hah) Cognitvely Impaired classroom for over 15 years - dealing with kids who are autistic or Down's Syndrome, in wheelchairs, can't control their bodily functions, strike out physically, etc.
She is so good at it-universally loved that now that she is retiring her lead teacher is having a retirement party for her separate from the usual district dessert recognition thing.
Me, I taught 7th Grade English half-time for two years. I was not good at it, just did not have the personality or patience for it, but really respect those that do.
When I first got out of college I was subbing and got several Elementary PE jobs. It wasn't hard, teachers and kids were great, but in the winter when we had to be in the gym I couldn't stand the noise. Not their fault.
On the other hand, a guy I worked with at my last job - tough as nails, former football player-coach who took our Girls' Basketball team to state Semi-Finals as coach - loves working with the little ones in PE. And they love him.

I was just reminded of something which makes me rage in the classroom: I have a class which is a problem class. Last class of the day, classic under achievers and unmotivated bunch, coupled with serious classroom management and behavioral issues. Because of such, It's a "Co-taught" class meaning I "have" a "co-teacher." By "have" I mean he's assigned to be in here and in the room and working with me and the students. However about half the days of 1st semester he was nowhere to be found. Either driving a bus for the district at the end of the day so leaving early to get to the bus shop, get the bus, and get back. Or doing personal things like printing out {censored} for his "training and certification" program, or doing laundry (yes he was doing personal laundry one day), or trying to sell his truck, he had someone come up to the school to take a test drive one day around the school parking lot, so on and so forth. Never here and if he is or was hes about as useful as, I do the lesson and then we split the class up for them to do their work in smaller groups. Its just a mess. Absolutely makes me want to snap. Those precious days he is here he becomes more a distraction and classroom management issue that the kids sometimes and gets them unfocused and off track more often than helping. 1 day last week the staff got ice cream from the principal during our 10 minute afternoon break. Normal people smashed the ice cream during the break then got back to work to finish the day. This guy, brings the damn thing into the classroom distracting the kids getting them all riled up over the ice cream and basically shooting the entire class period and killing it as a result. Or he'll sit in the back and be on his phone distracting me and the kids. Worst part about it..... he's "on" our football staff. He's about as useful there as he is co teaching too. Awesome dude right there!

As always, coachcb is my hero...don't expect too much of a substitute & if your a substitute any day the class "survived" unscathed was a good day...unless you subbed on the day a kid decided to urinate in a Mountain Dew bottle to only shake it up & splash all around other kids in the PE locker room...that was a PITA day!

I've only seen him briefly in passing. Another good sub is the one who sits at the teacher desk all hour strumming his banjo. I really can't complain about him. He does what is asked and keeps the kids entertained. He actually might be the best sub in our system.

Ha ha - I still remember, 30 years ago as a student, being in AP History. Teacher out, no sub showed up. We were in the middle of watching some movie about the Revolutionary War. So we put the movie on, turned off the lights and watched it. About 10 minutes in, we hear this running in the hall, and the Asst. Princ. comes whipping around the corner into the room, was all "what's going on in here" - obviously someone had figured out class/no sub. We were just sitting there, pointed at the TV, and said doing our work. He was floored. Asked a few questions, and figured out we were actually behaving responsibly.
So he turned off the TV, turned the lights on, sat down, put his feet up, and said "okay, let's chat about our troubles with the colonies" (he was from GB). Was a great class, he walked us through what their version of events was/is.
One of those little HS moments/memories that sticks with you.

Piling on the 'Crazy Sub' portion of this thread; my senior year in HS I took art (like painting and drawing art). Our teacher was out one block period and the sub decided to ignore the sub plan and show us a movie their daughter was in. That movie was "Flowers in the Attic".
