Coach, what is the proper ettiquite when behind a bunch and the other team pulls its starters? At the youth level if Im up a bunch I dont really care if the other guy leaves his starters in. Im hoping hes subbing some of his reserves/ younger/smaller players in, but if he wants a score to make it look better and give them some reps, no problem. IMO if you're behind and want to leave the starters in that is alright. Now there does come a time when deserving backups etc should probably get some game reps. In the situation I describe my first unit needed game reps together b/c due to injuries and whatnot...the first unit was not really the first unit so to speak. The other factor was this. Our 9-10 grades had played already and they had killed us. I knew if I put in my younger kids too soon they might drop 80 points on us. I'll call it damage control.

I agree, would have done same thing, would have no problem a coach doing that to me, none at all.

Im hoping hes subbing some of his reserves/ younger/smaller players in, but if he wants a score to make it look better and give them some reps, no problem. wow, thats a tough one...just because the other guy pulls his starters doesnt mean i am gonna quit. i have seen and heard that one where a guy yanks his starters up by 16 or whatever thinking/hoping that his oponnent also yanks starters and "resigns to defeat"...heres my thing...my starters are going to play 3 quarters. they just are. they work harder than my backups and they freaking deserve to play, win or lose. if we get up big big big on some one (ie mercy rule in the first half) then maybe they only get 2.5 quarters, but they are going to get their time. no way a backup who is a slacker is going to get equal time as a kid who wouldnt dream of loafing or missing practice. no way. so, if im up by 24 or down by 24 id say my starters are in for 3 quarters...that fourth quarter hits, ill take into consideration the tone of the game and each teams talent and make subs as needed. i have had parents rip me for not playing their kids more "in the first half of a blow out" and i just tell em "come to practice sometime and watch yoru kid sit out of drills and youll see why he doesnt get to play much". sad but true. at ktown especially my backups were just not into it nearly as much as my starters.

let me add and clarify...i have been down 2 scores say with 4 minutes left in a game...i have played my subs while the other guy has kept his starters in and tried to score yet again...that bothered me more than if im up and i sub and he leaves his starters in.

I've resisted responding to this for some time - just don't like to dwell on the negative because even with the hassles that have been mentioned, there is just so much POSITIVE stuff that comes from being a football coach. Here is the Sorriest thing I have ever come across in football.
More than a couple of years ago I was the new OC at a D-III University. It was week 7 or 8, toward the end of a tough season (we finished 3-6) and we were playing our rival at home. The Head Coach was kind of beat down by this time and he decided to let the DC give the pre-game pep talk. It was brutal to say the least, but what I could not believe was this - as he was wrapping up, his final words were...
"And after we beat _____________, you are going to come back here and we are all going to get Gloriously DRUNK!" I couldn't believe that he said it at all, but he said it 3 more times! Now I'm not against raising my own glass with the coaches (several times if needed) on our own, but to endorse getting blotto over and over to these young men - I found it extrememly reckless and unprofessional.
I share this ugly moment now because my own son is headed off to college this Fall to continue his football career. I'm confident that his new coaches will model responsible behavior but I want to remind all of us of the tremendous responsibility we all have as football coaches. I'm hopeful my son will have the occasion to celebrate a great many "victories" this coming fall, and I also hope that we, as football coaches, are all aware of the victories, and the terrbile losses, that we can create for our players.

fbdoc...I couldn't agree more. That is why I am AMAZED at the amount of chew and swearing used during practices at the H.S. level. Set a freaking example.
And the sorriest part...is when you ask them about it, the response is "that is the way I am". GREEEAT ANSWER there buddy

In my young days, I did my fair share of that mess. Why? Thats what I thought you were suposed to do, b/c thats the way that I was coached.
I learned.
We have a responsiblity to teachthe kids that that is not the way to coach, nor is it the way to act in Life. Like I said I Learned....after the boss man pulled me in and talked to me about it. It took a while, but it sunk in. Now that I am older and "wiser" .... MAN I cant believe I was ever that way.

Now here is one of those DUMB things that I heard a JV Coach say.
In a JV game, A kid's Shoe was untied and came off during the play. Instead of TYING THE SHOE. One of the coaches goes onto the field with a roll of tape, out of the Trainer's bag. He Spats the kids shoe. The Trainer asked him about wasting the tape like that, INSTEAD OF JUST TYING THE SHOE. The Dumb Coach replys: "Well every team in the NFL Does it".
People wonder why I hate "Hobby Coaches"

" Coach I can't make it to practice today, I got to go shopping for my sisters wedding shower"
What did I get myself into!!!!

Here are just a few short ones off the top of my head I had a kid miss practice on a Satuday because he had to go to Vegas for his girlfriend's mother's birthday I heard this indirectly but the father of the QB was mad at me (The OL Coach) because his son got sacked a few times and that hurt his chances at a scholarship. His kids size - 5'7'' about 160 pedestrian arm at best even for HS. No speed. Also, I am not one to make excuses but that team with a few sacks? They have I believe two senior scholarship players and maybe 2-3 juniors who will likely also be schollie kids!!!!

Our AD told us in a coaches meeting, " The prom is the most important thing we do at this school." That's right, the ATHLETIC DIRECTOR!

my favorite came this last summer when the new Varsity HC told me at my son's baseball game that he didnt hire me since he didn't know me.... then said we should have sat down during the previous season so my 15 yrs of coaching could be put to great use under his guidance (as the get-back coach). gosh this sounds like the city of milwaukee story. I am not sure a MPS will ever be a state champion. the support is just not there for it to happen. there are some schools, however they just cannot compete vs the suburb schools. Ironically, Riverside HS - a MPS school - lost in the D1 (large school) state semi's this year. IN fact they were a play or two away from going to the state final. Football in the city of Milwaukee is improving.

I saw a coach walk up to a ref and say, "all I do is make sure special teams are in and I'm the get-back coach. So, if you need anything or the kids on the bench get in your way, just let me know."
Never have I seen or heard of anyone declaring that they are the get-back coach.

I was the get-back coach. I was the rookie, that was one of my jobs on game night. I also watched the official keeping the play clock and yelled it out when he started counting in case the HC wanted to call timeout. I didn't mind doing it at all because it was a role that someone needed to play and the HC asked me to do it. I don't see anything wrong with that.

paydirt, I used to live in WI. I really wish Milwaukee schools would be better, but as you have stated the money/support just isnt there. I saw that Riverside had a good run. I was SURE they were going to lose to Marquette, and was very surprised when they werent. Best of luck to you at Hamilton
