so Jameslightfootball.com for about 30 minutes had a great SMU spring playbook and route decisions and offensive line play manuals. AWESOME stuff. alot of us may or may not have downloaded them and talked about it on another board.
I got called into my HR Dept - because "an associate of June Jones" called my work, and said that i was posting illegal information online and something "must be done" about that.
now, this information that i might have, was not stolen, nor does it have a copyright notice. Luckily, my HR said that it doesnt concern them and that they were just making me aware.
but someone honestly tried to get me fired for having some information on June Jones's offense. I am contacting Coach Jones by email shortly to see what he thinks of this....

That sounds like a Jenkins thing. That's crazy. The funny thing is I just read some stuff that someone posted about him. How he breaks down the secondary into 5 looks. Shoot on one side and concept on another. He some how got ahold of Jones's clinic tapes he used while at Hawaii

I was just reading someplace that Jones and Mumme, in particular, were very secretive about what they were doing for quite a long time, and this sprouted from the mindset Edwards and Scovil had, when they were at BYU. I don't know the legitimacy of this, but that's what the article said that I was reading.

I still think it's ridiculous the stuff that Light has gone through, including Auburn last year. He's a personal friend and has no bad intent. Just loves the game and breaking down what people do. There is no copyright on this crap.

At least I can understand why they wont release who shot kennedy. But football is of that magnitude.

It's the pass protection. That's half way a joke. I had always heard Jones would never talk about protection. The other fable is that someone who worked in the shoot got let go and spread the protection secretes around. What is interesting is you can find all kinds of USFL and WFL stuff out there along with the older college stuff. What you can't find is Oilers, Falcons, or Lions stuff.

This is one of the weirder threads I've read in a while. Please let us know how this works out.
There are several "groups" that are very careful about their stuff. I know the TCU coaches are very secretive and are very careful about letting anything about their defense get out. There is enough old TCU stuff out there that you can't even learn it all. So, not sure what the problem is.
But, I'm not getting paid $MILLIONS to win football games either, if I was, who knows what I'd do to keep that big check acomin'

(meanwhile their teams go 5-5, and they end up jobless)

What I mean by that, and this is true with zone tapes out their by gibbs, is that they give you little bits of juicy x and o's and then leave you hanging.

I would seriously doubt that these types of playbooks can be copyrighted. Copyright is a form of protection for intellectual property, and since playbooks are (generally speaking) derivative of other playbooks, it's unlikely that this could be protected under the law. It's possible that the first playbooks that described plays that had never before been seen could be copyrighted, but given that this information was (mostly) freely shared by its inventors, again, it's unlikely that a copyright would have applied. If it were copyrighted, anyone using a play from that playbook would have to possess the written consent of the intellectual property owner. What you might be able to apply, in this instance, is a creative commons license, but that would only protect the work product in limited ways. It would not, however, prevent others from redistributing it. Then again, the most restrictive creative commons license does prevent commercial use, so that might lead back to the same reasoning that one couldn't copyright a playbook.

I'm not a fan of sharing somebody else's stuff if they don't want it shared. Copyrighted or not, it's wrong. I wouldn't want it done to me and I won't do it to them.
