"Block Somebody"
sometimes we just need to get over ourselves.. coaching isnt rocket science and we dont need to make it that yelling block somebody as well as other phrases is usually just a natural reaction to the play happening and not the coaching that goes on. ALOT of coaches (myself included) yell things like that out of reaction and then coach the kid up on points after. Im not interested in yelling everything I got every play so I don't seem "ignorant" to pops and other coaches.

I worked with a guy who would always yell quit freelancing at the defense. This isn't inherently bad, but it would have been better to teach them why they weren't doing their job.

Wrong arm. I think coaches say this assuming kids know what it means. Many have no idea.

I'd wager that if a kid is effing up that bad you could probably pull him out and correct him without a huge drop off. Maybe he should have been coached during the week as well. This guy would also yell it at practice but then get mad if somebody else tried to help out he DBs.

"Eyes"
I would guess I say this word at a pretty high volume at least 100 per practice. Usually to remind our D to get their eyes on their keys before the snap. But other times I will just randomly say "eyes" while leading a drill that doesn't require much with their eyes. Funny how our brains work.

It's odd that you feel that way because on Page 3 of this thread (Message on Mar. 9) you thought that it was funny when people who take themselves too seriously get joked on: coachhuey.com/thread/68222/wear-on-sidelines?page=4

The fact that both of you two live in California offends me! coachbdud I am with you. Block "somebody" still seems to be futile, even in the examples given here. I think " attack the first color" or "hold the wedge" would be better cues if they are used in practice (so the kids understand the cues) to be memory jarring correctives.

Far worse than "block somebody" is "make a tackle" or "be an athlete." Yeah, thanks for the tip coach.
My most hated one is "YA GUTTA WANT IT!!!!!!" or anything to that effect.

Regarding things coaches say-- not a game slogan but I read it here constantly: "I would do anything to coach college football"... but when presented with a job posting for a restricted earnings $3,000 stipend job in LaGrange Georgia.... crickets.

To me, stuff like "Block somebody" or "Hit somebody" are silly because they're meaningless. Its just yelling something to yell something. If there's really nothing to say why say anything? We don't need cheerleaders. We already have them.

It's similar to fans who complain about "pampered" pro athletes by saying that they'd do anything to play but it turns out that they didn't play in HS.

Yes, it is telling that these comments/desires have led to our twitter/youtube celebrity society, where one apparently now it really is desired to be followed/liked simply for being followed or liked. Basically, people want the view from the top without having to make the climb.

My own personal worst offense is when somebody screws up I catch myself always saying "I'm just tellin' ya'" & then I proceed to tell them.
Not sure why I do it but I find myself irritating myself. By season's end probably waste about 10 minutes telling some body that I'm going to tell them something before I tell them something.
If that makes any sense at all.

On a similar note as the "Block Somebody" saying, one i always try to stay away from but i hear all the time, on both sides of the ball, is "Catch the Ball!"...
Even more frustrating when someone yells "Catch the Ball!", you look over your shoulder, and it's your offensive line coach...

I would do anything to coach college football, but my wife has other ideas. I like being married to my wife, so I have to listen to those ideas.

I was coaching baseball. I'm not a baseball guy.
Another team had a possible off-field suspension issue that was being talked about way too much. Rival. Regional Semifinal. Huge deal.
In a very fiery way, I made it very clear that I wanted the players in question to play because "we want to beat them with their best 11 on the field"
Kids started to snicker and reminded me that this is baseball (9 players on the field).
"Screw em! Give em 11 players and we'll still whoop that a**!!!"

How about, "You gotta want it!"...because the only reason we're screwing up is because we don't want to do things right.
