Regarding things coaches say-- not a game slogan but I read it here constantly: "I would do anything to coach college football"... but when presented with a job posting for a restricted earnings $3,000 stipend job in LaGrange Georgia.... crickets. I would do anything to coach college football, but my wife has other ideas. I like being married to my wife, so I have to listen to those ideas. id take that job, if they covered the divorce costs on top of the 3k stipend.

One of my HS coaches said, "You're never too far wrong if you knock somebody down," which is a more acceptable way of saying "Block somebody!"

How about "Follow through!"?
Once the ball has left your hand, foot, bat, etc. - there's nothing more you can do to affect its flight.
The follow through is merely an indicator of what happened prior to the release or contact. It has no actual affect on the outcome.

No, he is "correct" in the most literal sense that the act of following through does not affect the flight. However, if one is not "following through" then based on anatomy/physiology he/she did not perform the skill optimally. So I have to disagree with blb that it is not a useful cue. You can't properly throw and NOT follow through anatomically.

Exactly. If you perform the skill properly PRIOR to the release (or the club striking the ball, etc.) the correct "follow through" occurs naturally.
If the follow through is not proper, something that occurred EARLIER in the process must be corrected - emphasizing follow through alone will not do it.
That's what I meant that it can be an indicator of a flaw prior to or at release-contact, for example a passer "buggy whipping" his release.

I say stoopid stuff all the time...pick one. My personal favorite is "You guys look like two bugs humping." ONE ON ONE drill with less than thrilling effort or technique.

"I bet our alignment issues on defense are the fact that my circles I draw on the board aren't to scale."
Spoken by our DC that lined up in 11 different fronts 11 straight weeks...
True story...

One I use as oline coach "quit fatting around" I use that too. Fat can be a verb in many ways. "You just got fatted on."

Some things I've said
It's not my fault God didn't bless you with the body and athleticism to be an OL. (I'm the OL coach). The kids hear that stuff so much they repeat it. Even had a kid ask me if Jesus chose him to be an OL. Yes. Yes he did pick you.
Me telling my OL not to jump offsides on No Play. "If you jump offsides I will disembowl you" the player response "that sounds a bit extreme don't you think".

coachbdud I feel you with the "block somebody" comment. My HS coach used to always yell "Get Him!" Yep, that tells me a lot! My favorite quote from a former coach... Coach (to a D-lineman) - "Son how much do you weigh?" DL - "About 215 Coach." Coach - "Well I could take a 215 pound chit and it would do as much as you did on that play!"

I've caught myself a few times this summer yelling to my QB "Hit him!" like he can read my mind and know exactly which "Him" is open.

Now that's funny right there, I don't care who you are.

Okay "Get him!" drives me nuts......and I find myself saying it.
I think this happens whenever you are watching an athletic competition.
You cannot physically participate, but you want to, so something has to give, and you have to yell/slam things.
How many times have I said "Come on!" after a dumb play???

One on myself that my HC still gives me grief about to this day:
We are driving the ball in the 4th quarter with our JV guys, and are in a Goal to go situation.
I turn to our HC and, trying to think ahead, say, "Coach, if we punch this in, they're going to onside, so we probably need to get our hands team ready."
He says: "Good idea." Takes three steps away from me, stops, pivots back to me and says: "If we score we're going to kick off."
I said: "Right."

Our HC and CB coach are great friends. So the HC was just messing with him but the CB coach was getting frustrated with a couple of our younger CBs and you could see he was agitated about it after practice and I'm running him through the "what you see is what you've coached" deal. The HC (who was an Olineman) calls him out in our staff meeting and says "I don't understand the freakin problem, they are only throwing it to one guy...just cover THAT freakin guy." The angered "phuk you" look on the CB coach's face was priceless and he tried to respond but was so mad he couldn't even get the words together to make a sentence. And now "just cover THAT guy" is a running joke on our staff.
...or if they run it, just tackle the guy with the ball.
Defense is easy.

I have a few tales from over the years but my favorite involves a young RB's coach and a film session. We had just lost a tight game because the backs had put the ball on the ground repeatedly. It was obvious we were seeing what was coached on film and the RB coach was getting defensive in a hurry. The HC wasn't happy and continually pointed out the technical problems with the ball carriers. The RB coach did a pretty good job of keeping his mouth shut and taking his beating until we got to the clip where the QB threw his one interception of the game. He decided to be a smarta$$, "Well, at least my guys aren't the only ones giving the ball awway".
The QB coach pops his shoes and socks off, props his feet up on the table and says, "Coach, sorry about my stank feet but I couldn't count the fumbles with both hands so I needed to see my toes."

During a 7 on 7 this year: Our FS puts us in man coverage and one of the sophomore CBs absolutely refused to roll up into press coverage. I told him several times, reassured him "find your breaking point out here, not in August" etc. After 2 slant route completions, the FS once again put us in man coverage and the CB was at an 8 yd cushion...I hold up the play and tell him to get in press. He just looked at me and didn't move and I said "son, get your butt up here and press this receiver or I'm going to bench you and your son." I turn around and the coaches are all facing away and dying laughing. I sincerely hope you get his son

This is a personal favorite of mine. I say this a 1,000 times during a season. Of course I follow it up with an explanation of the player's assignment or responsibility. I think it can be useful for the team concept if the individual knows and understands their role. Me- " Why am I talking to you? Because you didn't do your job. If you do your job you won't have me jumping your chit! But because you decided to not do your responsibility I'm talking to you. Do your job! Then I won't be yelling at you and I can correct the other player's mistake and we will be solid as a defense."
