Let me ask this, am I in bad taste wearing a hat backwards? I just feel like with a headset on it is more comfortable and I do not have the bill in my eyesight. Thoughts? Then why wear a hat at all? Most times at practice I wear a standard coaching straw hat. I usually have my head bic'd. I only wear a ball cap at practice to protect my head. But i like having the sun on my face so i wear it backwards. Thats just me though.

My first year coaching the offensive coordinator I worked for said that if the other teams coaches are wearing shorts then it is sure fire way to know that you can scheme them up. I've lived by that ever since. If our JV game is a Thursday instead of Friday most of the JV staff wears a pair of shorts we would wear to practice. I wonder how many teams have had this thought run through their minds about us then get their butts handed to them... I wonder how many times I have read someone respond to this "joke" and Ive thought that they take themselves way too seriously. Im lucky to have sleeves on at a JV game. Or even shoes for that matter. Some of yall really need to relax.

Here is a funny story. I was at a clinic listening to a local D1 college coach speak on special teams. I dont want to give his name away or the name of the guy away because he is well known. Anyway, this guy who is there listening as well is a big time head coach and his brother was a big time college head coach. Very well known. Anyway, we are at the clinic and they are dressed like they are about to coach in the state championship game. School everything. I think even the belt had the school name on it. I mean he looked perfect. The college coach asks him to come up to help with the demonstration. When he gets up there, his fly is down. haha.

I think we've all met people who say things like that and we just automatically assume you are one of those a-holes. I've heard exactly that type of statement from multiples of coaches. It's not that great of a "joke" when people hear that kind of crap from people for real.

Im in khaki shorts until the weather gets cold. We have coaches shirts that are only worn friday as well as coaches shoes that are also only allowed to be worn friday (Seriously, wearing them to practice will get you the death stare.)

I definitely reserve the coaching polo for Fridays only during the season, then it normally becomes my "casual Friday" go to shirt the rest of the school year once the season is over. For JV games, as has been asked about before, I normally go very casual for those. I normally just wear some sort of team T-shirt and then hoodie when it gets a bit colder. I would never go with sweat pants or wind pants for a varsity game but will occasionally for a JV.

I'm a big dude; we sweat a lot, so I wear shorts until it no longer poses a threat of massive lower body perspiration. Team dry fit polo and a hat on FORWARDS!!!!! Hate the backward hat thing. One of the most successful programs around here has a coaching staff dress code that I could get on board with real quick. They wear what they want apparently. HC wears a one of those Gilligan’s Isle hats, a lot of work boots and some flip flops, board shorts and shirts that are at least a size to big. They all look extremely comfortable as they are kicking everyone’s a$$. i love these kind of guys. Too me it's all about being comfortable. Personally I grew up w/o much $ so clothing wasn't much of an issue bc I couldn't do a ton about it anyway. Rarely had many dress up functions to go to. The old saying goes you can take the kid out of the trailer park, but you can't take the trailer park out of the kid (LOL). Seriously, by popular consensus here I would be considered a slob, but my feeling is if we win more than we lose not too many people are gonna take much notice. Never had any higher ups say anything. I just find something comfortable that represents our school and that's the last I think about it b/c I'm comfortable and my mind is solely on the game. JMO. PS - May give it more thought after reading some of your posts.....then again.

I don't think anyone cares what coaches are wearing as long as you're winning.

I'll let my DL coach wear an outfit made of aluminum foil if we held the point and got after the QB every down. Saran Wrap, not so much.

Coaches are under almost constant attack from all sides. Even "The Hoodie."
Why give detractors more ammunition by looking less than professional on game night when it takes so little effort?

I agree, you should look professional on the sidelines. But if you are winning, nobody is going to care if you're wearing sweatpants, khakis, jeans, or shorts. The only game I've ever noticed what a coaching staff was wearing was when they were all wearing matching sweater vests.
People might make a big deal about Belichick's hoodies, but I doubt anyone is telling him to start dressing like Al Golden during games.

I keep seeing people say that they want to "dress comfortably" as if dressing professionally and being comfortable are mutually exclusive. Buy comfortable clothes. I've tried on uncomfortable khakis. I don't buy those ones.
At the end of the day, it's your own personal decision. I'm not here to chastise anyone for their attire but I dress professionally because I believe that's what you're supposed to do. I represent the football program, the school, the community, my profession, my family, and myself and I want my attitude and appearance to reflect that.
Right or wrong, so much of society is based on appearance and first impressions. So much of the community doesn't see you until Friday night. They will be making snap judgments off of anything they can. Why give them ammo? Its the same reason we want our kids to dress respectably when they go to school.

I might wear shorts, but never just the basketball shorts or something like that. Under Armour and Oakley make some really nice (kind of expensive) shorts. I like them because I have a couple of pair of tan shorts and a pair of black ones also. These are not cargo shorts, but nice looking, cool material (kind of like dry fit) shorts. Besides, I have great looking legs and it would be a shame to deprive the mommies of the chance to get a Friday night thrill!

Apparently didn't make myself clear. Didn't say shorts aren't appropriate if game night is uncomfortably hot or that's just your preference, so long as they're dress-type (like you might wear on a golf course) and not gym or workout shorts.
Equipment-apparel companies that will sell you khaki "game" pants will sell you similar shorts, too.
Been known to wear them myself on Opening Night which is before Labor Day here. No longer have the legs for them after that, though.

I am that guy that wears shorts no matter the temperature. Having coached in Illinois for 7 years I got used to it. You would have thought I was an alien doing that in North Carolina this past season. I think this is every OL coach

JV Games I wear Gym Shorts and a Team issued t-shirt. Why? I just got done doing walk through's with the Varsity. If it is an away JV game I jog off the practice field directly to the bus to drive them to the game and call the Offense. Varsity we are the normal Polo shirt/Khaki shorts group. With team issued Jackets. Now if its raining I have a Froggtog rain suit I picked up from Dicks for a pretty decent price.
Their is a coaching staff in our area that no matter where you see them they are all dressed alike with Adidas golf pants embroidered/Golf Shirt or Vest. They even have matching belts and dress shoes. Now this is at a clinic. I looked at my Head man and he had on gym shorts and a sweatshirt that was more then likely from the 1980's. I will go with the gym shorts guy before I would go with the fashion Police. My wife already tells me what to wear I don't need a grown man to do that. We are not a sloppy group but, I just don't see the need in dressing to a "T" Except for Game Day.
One thing that bothers me when you look at some coaching staffs and the amount of Apparel they have. Our philosophy is if the kids raise the money why not spoil them with the fruits of their labor.

Interesting perspectives here, personally I got with kakhi and team polo (team issued pullover and jacket when it's cold) as does the rest of our staff. When it super hot a few will wear kakhi shorts. When coaching freshman and JV I'll wear kakhi pants and team polo/pullover, ours is on Saturday Mornings so we're never going straight from the practice field.
My thought process with it is two parts, first I want to look professional (first impressions, the Russell Wilson quote with the "there's a king in every crowd" comes to mind) but mainly I don't want any attention. The game should be about the kids and them enjoying the moment and being successful. If I'm wearing anything else, in my mind, I'm drawing attention away from the players, if that's because I'm over dressed or under dressed doesn't really matter.
