once saw a guy at a baseball game shield his eyes from the sun with his hand for a good hour... He had a hat on backwards. I couldn't pat attention to the game as I kept checking to see if he was still being an idiot lol... Blew me away.. I'm easily entertained I suppose

To me wearing a hat backward looks bush. But I never told my assistants not to. It's a personal taste thing, like shorts in all weather. Now the guy from another school who wore a fanny pack (and he was a cop no less)... Haters gonna hate on the backward hat. Gotta keep the silver label sticker there too on my flat brim, better tilted a bit to the side than turnt backwards. I just said I wore my hat backwards, not that I was a total D-Bag

I guess I just never saw the issue with a backwards hat. It is a school hat and not flat billed but like somebody else said as long as the boss-man is ok with it then it's good to go.
We had a guy that used to coach in flip flops...I thought THAT was unprofessional but what do I know, I wear a hat backwards...

Guess I wear what ever the hc wants. Been in the booth the last 3 years so I ditch the slacks and pull over for gym shorts and a t shirt as soon as I hit the box after warm ups. For me I broke in under some long time coach's so always try to look professional in honor of them so to speak. Do wear black cowboy boots for playoff games for no real reason besides that's what my mentor did.
Personally I don't much care about what coach's wear. Clinics really Crack me up reminds me when I was a union concrete worker and guys would wear there hard hat to the bus stop. Yeah we get it you have a job but the sky's not falling. I'm a bord shorts guy and go out of my way not to wear anything football related but mabey a school hat.

I've seen a HC wear a hard hat on the sidelines before. Other than that, nothing I've seen has every really stuck out in a good or bad way. I normally wear khaki shorts and team polo as late into the season as weather allows, but I have worked for a couple HCs that required khaki pants.

I saw an assistant coach from another school a few years back who wore just an Under Armour long sleeved compression shirt, UA golf shorts, UA socks and shoes and a visor. He had long flowing blonde hair and we called him "Thor." Everything he did screamed "LOOK AT ME" and he really ended up distracting us during the pregame as he warmed up their team.

This thread always makes me laugh. I especially like the hat conversation...because that hat really shields the blinding light at 8:30. That said, there are things other coaches do that I laugh at as well, like the shorts in snow. I'm all about looking professional, I'm a khaki polo guy, but it's a game and as long as we are in a uniform and comfortable I don't care. JV games I look like I rolled out of bed because I did for film before hand, not changing for that, school hoodie or tshirt, basketball shorts or sweats depending on weather.
Definitely with you guys, if the school bought me something I wear it, if they bought me nothing I wear my stuff.

Look professional (you're representing your school, community, AND profession) and be comfortable - don't get heat stroke or hypothermia.

I am a dinosaur (the most wrinkled one in Jurassic Park). When I was a young buck, an old-timer once told me that if I wanted be viewed as a professional I had to dress and act like a professional. I have never forgotten this advice. When I go to any function (game, league meeting, booster club social, etc) where I represent our school, team, or community; I dress accordingly in team attire. I do not want a player, parent, fellow coach, or administrator to be ashamed of me.

My first year coaching the offensive coordinator I worked for said that if the other teams coaches are wearing shorts then it is sure fire way to know that you can scheme them up. I've lived by that ever since. Statements like this never cease to amaze me with the sheer cockiness and stupidity of them. Yes, because only dumb people wear shorts.

Usually, I wear some khaki type cargo shorts and a team Nike polo. Usually add a pullover/hoody when it gets cold.
This past year, since I've lost weight, I wore a lot more of some Nike type insulated track pants. That and an Under Armour Scout tee the kids designed that had a Notre Dame type "Play like a champion" slogan on it.
I look at it this way- As long as I don't look homeless, I'm good. If my physical appearance is really that big of a deal, I'm not the guy you want leading your program. My job is to produce a good team made up of good kids who will do something with their lives. If I can do that in a t-shirt, what the hell does it matter? Your wardrobe isn't going to beat my kids.

What do you guys wear to a JV/Frosh game?
We just wear our practice attire. Usually athletic shorts, school color. And a team t shirt or cage jacket/pullover? At my previous job our HC made us wear Khaki's to the JV games. Drove me nuts, but gotta do what the boss man says.

Khakis and Polo normally, if we have them I prefer a pullover or cage jacket though. But as others have said, if they buy it I'll wear it. I used to be a visor guy but now I just wear the visor to summer practice and go without a hat for games-more comfortable with the headset.

Bike Coaching Shorts are a must Nothing says coaching like the ole' split the sack up the seems coaching shorts. Some Spot-Bilt shoes. Socks up to your neck. A coaching polo about two sizes too small that MUST say "Staff" & a chew so day-um big that your lips couldn't touch no matter how hard you try.

most cops or people with Conceal Carry permits wear a fanny pack. Understood, but who's he going to shoot from the sideline - Line Judge? Kid that commits a penalty? Loud-mouth parent? lol I used to think the same thing, until. A team in our district the last four years, who just so has happened to win 5 of the last 7 state titles of our class has about 20 undercover cops work their games.....including the entire Chain crew. I never would have known until about three years back when we went up there. My wife got to the game & they allowed her to park inside the gates of the stadium. The guy letting her in was a cop...told her the deal & sure enough. Great program. Great coaches. Just in a bad area of town.

I'm talking a rags to riches if ever type situation. Wore flip flops and proud. He passed away a few years back, but definitely beat to his own drum & needless to say, it worked for he/them. Great man. To add to it? Several of his players in the last half of the decade went onto play & star in different levels of the college game, many of them are now coaching. One is a position coach with an NFL team (was a National Championship winning QB at the 1-AA level), Two are in the college game (one is a recruiting coordinator of a Big 10 school). And numerous others are spread out w/in the state coaching.

Chuke Williams. His players? Loved him to the moon and back. I mean...loved him. And, from everything I've ever heard was a tough son of a gun. He was an old school coach in every essence of the word. He had WR, who later went to UK (who is now the recruiting coordinator at Purdue, Gerad Parker) that became the all time reception leader in the Nation.....and, he was in a wishbone triple/belly option offense. He played for two QB's, one is Jason Michael who was the QB of the '02 WKU National Championship team (now an assistant coach for the Titans) & the other was my qb in college (who is now the OC back at that same HS). I don't know if Gerad still holds the HS records for receptions or not, if not, it's only a few years removed. How many people out there would ever guess, though, that the All Time reception leader in the history of HS football (and, in this relative present day/generation) played SE in a Wishbone offense? Yeah....lol..never been there. But I hear you guys are doing ok for yourselves.

Chuke's teams at Lawrence in the 90's were simply amazing. The man would wear flip flops as if he just bought them from old navy before the game.
I always wear khakis and team polo. When it gets cold I will wear a hoodie or something like that. We have a coach in the area who has wore a suit to every game since 1983. No matter the game time.

I'm a big dude; we sweat a lot, so I wear shorts until it no longer poses a threat of massive lower body perspiration. Team dry fit polo and a hat on FORWARDS!!!!! Hate the backward hat thing.
One of the most successful programs around here has a coaching staff dress code that I could get on board with real quick. They wear what they want apparently. HC wears a one of those Gilligan’s Isle hats, a lot of work boots and some flip flops, board shorts and shirts that are at least a size to big. They all look extremely comfortable as they are kicking everyone’s a$$.

I love the be profession thing (sarcasm)
I would be deemed unprofessional by a ton of people on here, but hey.
During the game, I wear Khakis, Shirt (Sweater Vest) or Dri-Fit (Short Sleeve 1/4 Zip)
During Pre-Games as the HC, I come out my locker room, with beat headphones when warm (Team Tee/Shorts and watch warm-ups, etc..)
But that's me.

My first year coaching the offensive coordinator I worked for said that if the other teams coaches are wearing shorts then it is sure fire way to know that you can scheme them up. I've lived by that ever since. If our JV game is a Thursday instead of Friday most of the JV staff wears a pair of shorts we would wear to practice. I wonder how many teams have had this thought run through their minds about us then get their butts handed to them...
