I have always answered that anal thinking with this, what are you gonna do if someone isn't there? Next! But, with only 45 kids 9-12, who that is sometimes is a game time thing. Especially on the specialties. Plus, 530 is the first time we expect kids to be around for a 7pm game. The guys I don't get are the ones that have kids come in at 3pm or earlier for a 7pm game. The ones who baffle me are the guys who wonder what to do with the kids if there's no school on the Friday that you have a game.

I agree.. When I was a younger head coach I would have the kids report RIGHT after school and get them focused.. Have a dinner.. Walk Thrus.. blah, blah, blah..
Too much tension and honestly 3-4 hours before the game I WANT TO BE AWAY from them. Who wants to be on top of each other 4 hours before a game.. Need some space and time away.

We had a 7:00 game and it was a minimum day so we got out at 12:30. Our coach bought us all tickets to some football movie and we couldn't leave the school when we got back. The result? We were sluggish as all get out. Only won by 14 against a team that hadn't won a game in four years. Never again. Let kids be kids before games so long as it isn't distracting.

It's the time we live in. I'm a pretty young coach and twitter was getting pretty big when I was in college. Everyone has their pregame rituals, and mine included tweeting song lyrics that were getting me pumped up pregame. It was part of my preparation, and when I sent out a tweet about DJ Khaled "All we do is win" I knew it was time to lock in and go to work. It was my final gametime trigger. We live in an age of constant stimulation and that includes pre-game. As long as kids focus in when we step out for warmups I don't care what they do pregame (Within reason of course) I guess this is just the kid in me.

Most on here are saying the same thing. Let them be themselves, use phones or whatever, as long as it's not distracting. That's a given. I'm pretty sure the ones posting with stricter policies are that way because the phones were distracting.
For those saying yes to phones, what do you do if they are distracting? Kids getting out of seats to see someone else's snapchat photo, instagram, looking at texts and pics of other's girlfriends, etc. When Its obvious football or whatever sport is last on their mind.

The ones who baffle me are the guys who wonder what to do with the kids if there's no school on the Friday that you have a game. I used to be paranoid about that one too. It always seemed like we played like crap on those days. However, since I got here, we usually play OK on those days. Not any differently than any other day of the week. I think it just depends on the group of kids you have. I CERTAINLY will never entertain the notion of bringing them in all day.

Some of you guys would have lost your minds at the last school I coached for. The school gives every kid an iPad. We had a few longer trips we took coach buses for. Walking back to the bathroom it was like zombieville on that bus. Every kid had their iPad fired up doing something with their phones out right next to them! Hey whatever... It was funny watching them all try and find places to charge their stuff when we stopped!

If you're only doing something, b/c someone is watching you, you're not doing it for the right reasons. And, if that's the case, it's a failure on behalf of both the person doing it and the person who taught them to do it.

Never have had to address it ... we always arrive to away games 2 hours ahead of time. Once they enter the locker room and begin to prepare for specials there is plenty of time to get their minds right for game time. The majority have their ear buds in listening to music or are taking a nap while on the bus. Every one has their way of preparing to be at their best on game day.

If you want to stop it, make it clear its not allowed and enforce your standards. That's not a complicated subject, its leadership 101 (have standards and hold people accountable to those standards.) Kids do what you allow them to do.
Whether or not its a good thing to stop it is a completely different question. When are they texting? I wouldn't want it during practice or during games. Maybe a quick text before halftime talks but certainly not while we are correcting, inspiring, and directing. If folks want to text when no one is actively instructing or teaching them...who cares? Let them relax and unwind the way they do.
On a side note, sure, texting may be the wave of the future but there are limits to how much I will accept. (We've all seen those {censored} at dinner that spend more time on the phone than engaged in conversation.) This notion that standards should be compromised because "modern youth" are different is just nonsense. Have high standards and hold people to them. Hell, I'm only 27 and I'll throw the BS flag out each and every time I see the "modern youth are different" excuse thrown up. People are lazy and will try and get away with whatever you let them get away with. This isn't a new phenomenon. The quickest way to get ahead is by outworking your competitors. This works because most people don't work hard.

When I was a kid the TV had to be off during dinner. No one was to answer the phone and don't act like you don't like anything on your plate. Times have changed. Change lanes or get passed!

If I saw player with cell phone after we started Pre-Game routine (5:45 pm) I'd tell him to put it away and don't do it again. But I haven't seen it. Up until then probably wouldn't mind (except during film).
On bus to away games I tell them "Inside voices and school appropriate language."
On way home after loss they're usually pretty quiet without me having to order it, at least for awhile (kids get over losses much faster than coaches).

And that's even long for us. We try to get there about 50-60 minutes before game time. I hate just hanging around doing nothing.

I'm with some others. It's one I've never thought about, haven't fought it and not going to worry about it.
My only rule with cellphones is:
1) Don't have them out in the locker room when myself or another coach is addressing the team. 2) Don't bring them into the weight room during workouts (I crank the jock rock and it's enough variety for everybody. Matter of fact, they only want my phone being the one hooked up. I guess I have that going for me. lol)

Speaking of Friday games when there is no school...do you bring your players in the morning for a quick "practice" or breakfast?
On the Friday we have full day teachers institute we have a quick "wake up" practice. 15-20 minutes tops of stretch, ST check, plays on air, etc.

Im actually surprised this created so much discussion. Until I read this I guess I never gave it much thought. Maybe Im lucky but I think our guys have a pretty good understanding of what to do and what not to do, this has never been an issue.
Bus: Our SHORTEST trips are between 1.5-2 hours and longest can be over 5. NO WAY could I imagine them entertaining themselves for that long. Heck I watch movies/listen to music why cant they?
fieldhouse: they know that if Im talking or there is business being done they better not be on their phones, but I let them plug an earphone in if they want while we lift (our stereo is broken) as long as one ear is open in case I am saying something to them. On game day (home games) we report at 5. Our dinner is the night before. I give them time to go home etc... While they are getting taped etc I could care less as long as its not during any meetings/talk
sideline: UMMMMM its almost comical to think about what would happen if I ever saw this. Im not even sure our guys have even thought about doing this.

Its more about getting them out of bed then anything else. Don't want them to sleep in till 4 pm.

His reply to you was, 'What are you going to do, when no one is there to make sure that it gets done?' Read back through the thread. No it wasn't. When I said we do them to make sure all of the kids are there he responded with There's nothing whatsoever about doing anything because anyone's watching us or supervision, or anything like that.

Coaches that visit us can't believe what they see. We eat as a team at 4 up town. They do not say a word. This is a tradition that was in place. We come back to the field house and let them move around a little and then I tell them to get off their feet. We have a movie in the back, some have bugs in, some sleep, some texting, some bring a flat screen and play madden or what ever it is now, some cards, and even a few reading AR. You would not even know they are in the room. We tell them to come get their gear and they start getting dressed with music over our speakers. Flip the switch!
Away games on the bus ride you can talk but not loud. Basically don't make me get on you and be ready to play! Our biggest problem are the MS kids wanting to be in the field house and being MS kids but our kids will tell them in a hurry to shut up. They learn before they get to us!

I was referring to schools not practicing on Thursday, and having their usual Thursday walk-through/pregame before school on Friday. Carry on. Disregard me.

I like the 10-15 minute out rule on the bus. I like the silence.
And from my experience the better teams were quiet and focused before games, even if it was not because they were forced to.
