Iron sharpens Iron
I also saw a team one time that just put the date of the state championship on the back of their shirt. Amazingly they actually played in the finals that year, but they lost.

At the first school I coached at we used "Believe." I liked it. We also preached wanting dreamers, as opposed to kids with expectations. Kids who expect to start, or expect to win championships often get disappointed; but a dreamer can make things happen. They reach their full potential, or beyond.

I've always liked the phrase "Die Trying". Most kids are scared to fail, scared to really try, scared to dream big. I've always been the dream big type and I've always felt that I would rather die trying to do something extraordinary than survive in the shadows.

we've always had a saying, "start fast, stay focused, get a win today". we would say it all the time - year round, as a way to start the day, typically. over time, it got shortened to, 'fast, focused, win today'.... then, upon seeing the "win the day" stuff it was natural for us to incorporate something we've always used into the 'new' wtd stuff and put it all over the field house. below are some samples: ... huge 'banner' above the doors heading out to the fields ... large picture posted in varsity locker room ... have these in various sizes in all locker rooms and weight room fyi, for those interested. these products (along with many others at our school) were made by this company. imagemaker4u.com/Great stuff, Coach! Thanks for sharing.

If its dedication to the weight room you are looking for - try instilling accountability with I WILL - players will say to eachother I WILL hit the weight room hard today etc. Commitment cards were big for us this year - as it emphasized if you didnt do the stuff you were suppose to your weren't just letting yourself down but the team also.

Our team motto for now until 2012 will be "Deserve Victory" but I just hung up a sign in the weightroom with a quote my wife suggested "If it is important you will find a way; if not you will find a way out"

Had on the back of our strength and conditioning t-shirts, paraphrased from Gen. Patton: "The more I sweat in peace, the less I'll bleed in battle."

When I was in high school our coach gave us all a chain link and a leather string. Talked about the strength of each link when they come together as one. It had a lot of meaning to us players. Walking around the halls and seeing each other with our necklaces really made us feel united. We even began tying them onto our shoes during games, not by coaches command but as our own thing. I'm going to do that with my own team sometime.

Have used in the past and maybe coming back this year... "You reap what you sow!" Based on a verse from Galatians 6:7-9 In a nutshell, everything you do will have a direct effect on your future some way, some how in every aspect of life, not just athletics. Actions have consequences, positive or negative.
BUT... I really liked what Chip Kelly-Oregon had to say at the LV-Nike Clinic... 'We don't have yearly motto's, themes, we are one thing every year...Win the Day!! Fast, Hard, Finish!! Everything we do, every year is built around that motto.' He challenged the coaches to reflect on what is your team known for or what do you want to be known for and be exactly that and it should be evident in watching 5 minutes of your practice.
Really got me thinking!!

My personal favorite, and something we have used before...
From Rudyard Kipling's "Law of the Jungle" poem... "And the strength of the pack is the wolf, and the strength of the wolf is the pack."

We have changed themes every year. 2011 new job, new school. We used All In. We were terrible this year and at the end of the year we decided that we (kids, coaches, everyone) were not all in. We then brainstormed as to what All IN meant to us as a staff. We decided all in was going to be something our program will always be built on. So we are now talking to the kids about all of the things that makes us ALL IN. Kids are now buying in. So instead of a yearly theme we will have a program theme

My personal favorite, and something we have used before... From Rudyard Kipling's "Law of the Jungle" poem... "And the strength of the pack is the wolf, and the strength of the wolf is the pack." Our school mascot is the Wolfpack. Before every game, after a moment of silence/individual prayer, we bust out the first two stansas of the poem, repeating the last two lines louder and louder. Great for any team that has the Wolfpack as their mascot.

Our program motto EVERY year is Hoka Hey! John 15:13. It is a Sioux term meaning "Today is a great day to die." meaning die to SELF for the good of my TEAM.
Here are some yearly ones we have used:
Prepare for Glory (2 Corinthians 4:17)
Reap the Harvest (Galatians 6:9)
As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another (Provebrs 27:17)
A cord of three strands is not easily broken (Ecclesiastes). Physical, Mental, and Moral toughness.
Good is the enemy of great
60 brothers, one mission, one heartbeat
I will be my brother's keeper
With Tradition Comes Responsibility

Last year it was 1:11-1 player playing for the 11 on the field and not having 11-1's out there.
This year really battling the entitlement thing with our kids-"EARN IT"

We used 2 basic concepts last season. FOCUS- following one course until successful Motivate and Dominate, we would tell the players everyday to motivate each other so that we can dominate the other team on game day

When I transferred to a 4-year school, the previous off-season slogan was "Refuse".
One of the players on my floor in my dorm told me why he decided to vote for that slogan...
Refuse to go to weights, refuse to go to practice, refuse to go to class...
