Not to pick nits but Bear Bryant used the phrase "Those Who Stay Will Be Champions" in his book Building a Championship Football Team (1960). May have had something to do with The Junction Boys.
Bo borrowed it in his first year (1969) at Michigan and after they upset "greatest ever" Ohio State, who was on a 22-game winning streak, became famous for the slogan.
We don't use yearly themes as such but two of our program mottoes are:
"Effort is not optional"
"The Pride and Tradition of the Huskies will not be entrusted to the timid or the weak"

We have struggled the past two seasons with a young roster. This year all of our projected starters are Juniors and Seniors. Youth and inexperience was used as an excuse for lack of success. This year our theme will be NO EXCUSES!
We will have t-shirts and the saying in our weight and locker rooms.

Two that went big for me:
Theme for 2009: 212...that's all we had on the back of our shirts. For weeks we didn't tell anyone what it meant unless they guessed correctly on their own. Most of you science dudes know that 212 is the temperature at which water boils. At 211 you're just simmering. The difference? Well, do you want to simmer or boil. In other words, how hot to you want to be? When you simmer you can cook a hot dog, but when you boil you make steam. And steam can move a locomotive.
You can also point out the difference one degree makes. One yard in football, one block, one tackle, one penalty, etc and so on...there is a 212 website that has a video and a book. You can find it cheaper on amazon.
Getting goosebumps thinking about it right now! One of my kids told me the NY Jets had it on their shirts, but I swear my little rag tag bunch had it first. lmao.
Theme 2010: The other one we had this year was 11-48-14. You guessed it...11 men, 48 minutes, 14 games (you can change it to however many games it will take you to win states). Again, for weeks we didn't tell anyone what it meant. This was a little harder for the novice fan. At first we told people that it's a combination lock...the one to the gate at the state championship. Once it got out, it took off like wildfire. The papers ate it up, too.
In theory, it was created to establish a team concept. It will take all 11 guys to execute a game plan for 48 minutes for the entire season to win some type of championship. But with out the 11/48, the 14 doesn't happen. It's a "team first" concept. Fortunately for us, the kids bought in and went 13-1...winning states.

We (Olathe South) used T.O.T.A.L. this past season. Worked out pretty well for us... We've used 212 in the past. I like turney's "paved with iron" as well.

We used Coach Huey's T.O.T.A.L. in 2011 as well, and we did TURN UP THE HEAT (same as 212) a few years back.

We under achieved last year in a big way. So we have been trying to get the kids moving in the right direction, weight room, individual camps etc. One of the things we are thinking about doing is to get the kids to take pride in what they are doing and how they are perceived.
At one of our games last year, this was actually on someones sign they ran thru before our game (as a guy who likes to bust somebodies b@lls on occasion, I thought it was a pretty good shot). Say we were the Michigan Wolverines, the sign said the following:
....it's just Michigan!
We thought of putting that on our shirts for the weight room. ...it's just (insert your name).
The thougt was that they would take it as an insult or disrespect and use that as inspiration to work hard. A few of the kids are saying it already and they are working their a$$ off.

We have some ego issues and some selfishness over the past few years. Most of the main issues have graduated, but there are still some younger brothers coming up, so we are thinking ..."Band of Brothers" We did this and liked it

We use "Protect the Family".
Used that the last two years - you can use that in everything you do in football and what you are about. We are a family-protect that in everything you do, say, work habits, attitude, character, etc.

“Perfect Attitude & Perfect Effort” A Motto, A Mantra, A Way of Life, & A Way of Play
The Essence of Greatness: “Perfect Attitude – Perfect Effort” It’s what we base everything on... the fact that if you give your absolute best level of focus and effort… then everything else will take care of itself. Focus on excellence, and success will occur as a result. Do your absolute best to play at your absolute best level, and don’t worry about the rest. Everything will fall perfectly into place if you bring a perfect attitude and perfect effort to the mix. Perfect attitude and perfect effort—stated simply—means that it’s all about what we do… and it’s all about how well we can do it.
Every member of the team is given a double-sided, laminated sign. On one side of the sign reads: the words Perfect Attitude, followed by a description of what it means to ‘play with a perfect attitude.’ On the other side reads: Perfect Effort, followed by what it means to ‘play with a perfect effort.’
Before games, the team gathers in the locker room, and everyone takes out his “Perfect Attitude – Perfect Effort card—coaches as well. As a football family, we read over the cards in unison (with one student or coach reading out-loud). We start with “Perfect Attitude,” and then “Perfect Effort.” It is a similar tradition to what the University of Tennessee calls “The Game Maxims.”
“Perfect Attitude and Perfect Effort” is a unique mantra. However, it really all comes down to the idea of ‘Always bringing your “A-Game.’ Reading the cards is the team’s way of making a personal commitment to one another—a commitment to bring a Perfect Attitude and a Perfect Effort to the table, for a full 4 quarters. It is a commitment to play with everything one has.
____________________________________________________
There Are a Lot of Things That You Can’t Control In Life: Focus On the Ones You Can: You Can Always Control Your ATTITUDE and You Can Always Control Your EFFORT. Every minute of every day, we talk to our students and coaches about the things they can control in life. We tell them about the numerous things that ultimately will be out of their control, and which, therefore, should be out of the perspective of focus.
While there are always going to be a lot of things that you can’t control in life, you can always control your ATTITUDE and you can always control your EFFORT. More often than not, it is how well an attitude you develop, and how strong an effort you display, that will influence the outcomes that you experience, and which dictate the achievements that you attain.
While it is unrealistic to expect a perfect performance every single day—on every single play—it certainly is possible to play at your absolute best level—by putting forth your absolute best attitude and absolute best effort. Champions display championship attitude and championship effort at all times and in all ways. The greatest of champions display a Perfect Attitude and a Perfect Effort.
“Perfect Attitude - Perfect Effort” – This is truly what it means to “Always Bring Your A-Game.”
____________________________________________________
PERFECT ATTITUDE Playing With A Perfect Attitude Means: Be positive. Be confident—not cocky, but confident. Be positive. Be confident. Remain positive. Remain confident. Trust your preparation. Trust yourself. Trust your ability to perform and execute. Trust your teammates and trust your coaches. Trust everyone to do his job perfectly. Trust your brothers to give their all. Trust your coaches. Trust everyone around you. Trust yourself. Trust your preparation. Trust everyone to bring his A game. Every play. Every day. Every time. All the time.
Have a Perfect Attitude: Stay Focused. Stay Determined. Live in the Moment. Be Great in the Moment.
_________________________________________________
PERFECT EFFORT Perfect Effort Means: Give your all, at all times. Give a positive effort. Give a great effort. Give your best effort. Give everything you’ve got, and give it every single time. Every play. Every day. Every time. All the time. Give your best. Give your most. Give your all.
Pour your heart into the game. Pour your soul into everything you do. All play… Every play. Every day. In every way. Perfect Effort means: Give Your All… Every time… All the time.
Give a Perfect Effort: Always Give Your All.
PERFECT ATTITUDE – PERFECT EFFORT

2795dg
This was our first year at a school that had been a combined 1-89 the previous 10 years. 2795 is the melting point of iron. We played it off of the "as iron sharpens iron, one man sharpens another" theme. However we talked about us melting down our "iron" and building the foundation that we want, not using the "iron" of years past. The kids bought in and we were able to find some success and made the playoffs for the first time in school history and now we are talking about the "as iron sharpens iron" theme for the off season.
We will have a new theme this summer for next year, thanks for the ideas y'all are posting.

we've always had a saying, "start fast, stay focused, get a win today". we would say it all the time - year round, as a way to start the day, typically. over time, it got shortened to, 'fast, focused, win today'.... then, upon seeing the "win the day" stuff it was natural for us to incorporate something we've always used into the 'new' wtd stuff and put it all over the field house. below are some samples: ... huge 'banner' above the doors heading out to the fields ... large picture posted in varsity locker room ... have these in various sizes in all locker rooms and weight room fyi, for those interested. these products (along with many others at our school) were made by this company. imagemaker4u.com/

We had two themes this year...
A coach wanted ours to be "Believe"
I never liked it, we had it on our shirts and we got breaks on it.. but i just didnt like the word... to me believe is like hope... i dont wanna hope we can win... I prefer being much cockier than that and knowing were about to go win, or go score...
I started my own thing to get the kids pumped i got from a local rap artist so all the kids knew it... I was always preaching about being confident, playing with swag... I would yell woop woop, and the entire team would respond with swag swag... it got pretty big when i had random kids at the school screaming swag swag at me when i walk in the halls
and in our big rivalry game vs the cross town school, when were doing it on the sideline at various points in the game the cheerleaders and some of the fans joined in... to me that is the coolest thing, when you can get the community to be a part of it
My dream is to get crowd interaction with team during a game... I once heard a story about this team in a small town community setting... every time they did Kick off they have a player who lifts his hands and the whole KO team does as well he says something like kick off ready (all the kids get hands up) then he points to their bleachers and says their mascot name ... for example, Panthers, Ready? the entire crowd stands with hands up like they are on kick off, then EVERYBODY does the ole ready hit, claps their thigh pads and then they do their Kick off...
i think that is awesome, to get everyone involved
Im thinking of themes for next year... not for slogans or anything but for an offensive identity... I really love watching Mike Tysons best knockouts on youtube... I think Mike Tyson will be our identity... his career spiraled but in the beginning... he was the baddest man on the planet, and he knew he was going to knock you out

That's a good one, I think. I like it. We need one, something about hard work and dedication, particularly in the weight room. Because when teams are stronger than us, we lose. Now there's more to it than that, for sure, but the teams that we can't bully, beat us every time this season. So we probably need to figure out some kind of motto related to that, hard work and dedication. It Not What We Do, It's How Intensely We Do It.

Our theme last season was, "11 for 1". We used this as a reminder that we must work together and all 11 players on the field at any given time must act as 1.
The year before I stole a line from Yoda in Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back; "Do or do not, there is no try". Only one kid had heard the quote before.
