Unfortunately this does go on in some leagues down here, and it makes me sick. I will say there are other leagues that are very strict about this, the one I coached in. In their by-laws if it is found, the offender will be banned (it is enforced).
The payment of young players and their families is just plain crazy to me, this is youth sports. After watching the piece I thought about a situation I was in with really low player turn out my first season (real bad coach the season before). A Father and son (the kid apparently played the season before and was a good player) came up to me at the end of practice a couple weeks into the season and said “it looks like you need some players out there, (Jimmys) a good QB and athlete, better than any one I see out there” Me: “We would love to have him come out, we have a QB at the moment but if he works hard and wants to compete for the QB job, we will give him the opportunity” Father: “What will you do for (Jimmy) if he comes out?” So I went on about teaching fundamentals and team work, and they looked at me like had 3 eyes. I thought that was a strange conversation. My asst. thought they wanted money or something, I thought: no way that doesn’t happen. After seeing the piece, I wonder if it just went right over my head…
Never heard from the kid again

Florida: Hard to really say for me... I'm a new coach, and I'm also in NWFlorida where supposedly the talent isn't the same. But these are the teams that constantly seem to be at the top of everybody's list. St. Thomas Aquinas Plant Manatee Miami Central Miami Northwestern Dr. Phillips Tallahassee Lincoln Dwyer Pine Forest (had to throw in a local school) Cocoa NWF schools: Pace: Small town feel, Big Time football. They've been running the same offense since the 80's and they still constantly compete every year. The definition of consistency, missed the playoffs for the first time in a long time last year. Pine Forest: National Champs in 1988, they always seem like the most athletic team in the area (QB had a 99 yd sneak last year). It's a shame that they have very little support from the community because the kids are extremely classy for the area of town they're in. Niceville: A military community. Players are disciplined and overachievers. Constantly compete at the top levels. Pensacola: Coaching staff has really figured out how to coach inner city kids. So many athletes, very hard to defend. Pensacola Catholic: Great program and coaching staff. 1a school that beats 5a schools 40-0. Some of those have come around in recent years but i will agree with these St. Thomas Aquinas Plant Manatee and add Lakeland couple more bolles pahokee glades central Naples

Over the weekend I had my annual icefishing trip with my college football buddies. The topic of concussions came up as our sons are now at the jr high and high school level. We talked about all the tests and lost playing time over concussions now days. Also the seemingly high rate of concussions that seem to happen vs when we played ball back in the 80's. One guy brought up an interesting point, he pointed out that almost everyone playing back in our day wore a neck roll linebackers, safety's, fullbacks, most lineman even tight ends. None of us could remember having a concussion during our playing days. I think my buddy made a valid point, the neck roll protects the violent snapping of the neck and helps absorb every hit. it makes sense to me. anyone else see the validity in this? Simply put, no. There's a reason they stopped wearing them. but they did look sweet...

Jpdaliy, I don't know that I would put key players getting injured on a poster the kids see, what happens if during the season a key player goes down... Can they look back at that and use it as an excuse?
Last year TD maker put a list of cancer things and it was negative... so I took it and re posted everything spinning it positive to what winners do.. i think he posted both side by side Maybe do the same... what will get you beat and what will help you win (cc is pretty good) 1. Off-season preparation 2. Ball security 3. Great tackling technique 4. Knowing your assignments 5. Discipline and Focus 6. Full Effort 7. Execute, Execute, Execute 8. Blocking till the wistle 9. Focus on the kicking game 10. Confidence in yourself and each other

In your opinion what is the main purpose or goals a freshman football team should look to do? Lets say you had a Varsity JV and freshman squad. What should the coaches on the freshman team be trying to accomplish with the kids to help the program out?
Is winning the most important, player development, ect?

The nice thing about coaches film and seeing the whole play is that there are 10 other kids making that highlight happen.... they want to see themselves on the screen too, not just the ball carrier.

Having to sit out the first two games seems like a pretty decent punishment in itself for coming late. How many games do you play?

The principle... and as I have followed airraiders posts I also can't wait to read more.
Air, Maybe it's time to write a letter to the school board on what led to your resignation... After all these teachers leaving they probably already looking for proof to remove this guy.

JohnKnight, your opinion is a bit biased as an Ohio homer, as would mine being from Florida

One thing that one of my teams did get was to go on a color. We would Call the play on a color, The kids knew that they were trying to draw a team offsides so they would go through there cadence and then pause and say "green" running the play. I think out of the 4 times we did it they didn't jump 3..... The first time they jumped I stopped calling it. Another team we tried it with couldn't do it at all... I think if you get real lucky with some kids, it could be feasible.

Tried freeze today. I'm the OL coach. Asked HC, who had tried to go on two a few times the last few practices with no good results, to let me try something. Got in the huddle and said do y'all know Freeze Take 5. All the faces looked at me....I said good, it's not a play, you line up and don't move, the QB calls the snap count, and you don't move, there's not blocking assignment...you don't move. They line up, and it works like butter. Praise all around, tell them they earned 5 easy yards...tell them to line back up and run 34 Power, which we'd been running all day...on the snap count like normal "GO, Ready, Hit"....half the line moved, half stayed put...the center didn't snap the ball....a complete cluster flub. LOL. Coach I think you went wrong when you told them :"to line back up and run "34 power" Next time tell them to line up and run "Freeze"

Doug, I'm sorry to hear about it.. I know you were excited going into a new place, and it didn't turn out the way you planned. Weather they ever know it or not the have lost a huge asset. Believe me, us coaches that come on huey's to learn, pay attention when you post because you are always giving level headed, experienced and informed advice.
Good luck I am sure you will find I spot to coach. -Case

Thanks for the input guys, I gave the coach my number and basically said if you need any help let me know, I will do what I can, or at least point you in the right direction... I really don't expect to have input, just wanted to be able to give some sage advice, if asked. Thought it would be good to get some thoughts from some more experienced coaches and if someone was in a similar situation reading this they could benefit too.
I will say, this is the second year in a row that i will not be coaching (just helping where I can) and I sure do miss it. Thanks, Case

I agree with the recruiting Dave C... and i want to help this guy out. I will print some fliers up. When I had this problem I went to the other teams practices when they had there cuts and signed some kids up.
Dave I Sarasota, I'm not so sure he has an idea on what he wants to do as far as scheme... and he is by himself so splitting up may be hard to do unless it is a day i am there. I can lean him in a direction, but I want it to be something he is comfortable with.
As far a skill players I identified 4 of the 7 that were at practice that could play a skilled position. And 2 maybe 3 looked pretty good.

I posted this on another board but would like to hear from some of the coaches on here.
I'm not coaching, unfortunately, because I have a one year old and with work and travel I can't make the commitment to put in the proper time. That being said I was called by our program to help a team this season whose coach backed out right before practice started. I cannot put in the time but said I will come by when I can, probably once or twice a week to help the new coach out. He is happy to have the help and has limited experience coaching. Tonight I went, they are two or three weeks in, 9 yr olds... but only have 9 kids with three weeks till their first game. I think they will have enough kids by game time (i was in a similar low # situation with the program a few years ago, also my experience is with 12 and 13 yr olds) I came today and focused on tackling, and believe that blocking tackling and shedding blocks are the three most important things to emphasize. I would like to give the coach some sound advice so, My question is: If you were in this situation, what would be your focus? how do you implement a system? (half line? ad the rest as you get them?) would you choose specific schemes? (simple is obvious) when I come should i get involved with the kids, if i cant be there all the time? (HC is by himself) where should i point the HC? (sites like this are obvious)
Will say the kids that were there were eager to learn and I was surprised at their effort.
Also some more background: We are one of many programs inside the city, but in a very competitive select league with many teams from the suburb surrounding areas. The other teams close to us are in other leagues that is typically not as expensive. So there are many programs close by us.
For the older teams in our program low numbers are usual but for this age group unusual. The younger kids usually have descent numbers. In the league our program has lower then most but has been steadily growing (we are a newer program). Both the 9 and 10 year old team are low because a coach decided not to coach at the last minute and he usually brought many kids from baseball. Years previous he did not have success on the field. typically kids will start signing up as school draws near.... the problem is the competition has had full rosters from the start and even cut kids... (my first season a couple of those cuts were my starters)
any suggestions are welcome
Thanks for your help in advance.

Coach Big B does a nice job, it is a great idea. There is a nice range of coaches that have been on... youth on up to college. He calls it the redzone show.

Mahonz, at least you have earned enough over the years to have a savings, cry me a {censored} river. Do you have a pension going? Because in essence that is probably what Mahonz savings is to him. His post was to show a sign of the times. The best thing to do is to vote in fiscally responsible honest candidates who do whats right. (Unfortunately I don't think they exist) When I hear stuff like extra curriculars are being cut, and my county spends 5 million on cutting down trees and putting in new ones and srubs for one corner...i get red faced mad

Coach Slack gave some good advice, because it could turn it into either a positive or a non-issue.
This story is a bit off topic: Back when I was in High school after our season we had some recruiters at a combine or something like that interviewing kids. This recruiter comes up to one of the starting guards and starts asking him questions and tells him: "We are looking for a guard and like what we see from you" He replies: "I'm a Full Back who played Guard are you looking for Full Backs?" The recruiter says: " We are pretty solid at FB but think you could really help us out at guard." Guard replies: "I'm a Full Back" Recruiter: "We are not looking for Full backs" Guard points at him and says: "BIG MISTAKE" and walks off The recruiter looks dumbfounded by the kid and I think mouthed "WTF" We all just laughed because we knew how stubborn he could be.
