I've posted this before, but there are probably signing ceremonies for everything now because people complained. Where I work, there aren't signing ceremonies for anything because they don't want to end up having a ceremony for everything. Where I work, they now have to have a "signing day" for kids that are just going to college to get a degree, because parents were complaining that athletes were getting special treatment. Tables lining about 2/3s of the gym with kids "signing." Unbelievable!!

The biggest issue, imo, is that Saban expects kickers to walk-on to the Alabama football team, and uses the scholarship to sign another position player. I know that’s the reason Eddie Pineiro went to UF instead of Alabama. I can’t speak for more recently, but I know that was the issue before, and immediately following the “kick six” game. As far as I know most schools expect kickers to walk on before giving them a scholarship. Definitely. Which is crazy to me based on how easy it is to lose a game due to the kicking game.

Has anyone created a "master practice plan" that they wouldn't mind sharing. Basically what I am looking for is something along the lines of one I created when I was a baseball coach that included everything that needed to be reviewed such as:
cutoffs to 2nd cutoffs to 3rd cutoffs to Home bunt defense (nobody on) bunt defense (runner on 1st) bunt defense (runner on 3rd) etc...
so for football it would include things like
taking a safety free kick after safety free kick after fair catching a punt play before hail mary hail mary hail mary defense 4 min drill (staying in bounds on runs) victory formation etc....
basically a reminder sheet of all the weird instances/situations that should be practiced and not forgotten about. I try to live by the idea that if I haven't went over any special circumstances with the kids in the last two weeks, me or our staff shouldn't get mad at them for not knowing, thats on us.
I know it will vary in some aspects as offenses/defenses are different in football, where they are the same in baseball. However, I am just wanting a starting point.
If nobody has one, I will try to create it and share it with anyone interested.

I want to start a program where our players recognize teachers , and we make a big deal about them. A jerseys to wear, attend pre game meal, stand on sideline , etc. Anyone ever do this and have ideas to share on how to implement and it went? I do something that I think is pretty cool and the faculty loves it. Each year during camp, I have senior players choose a faculty member that had an impact on their life - any grade level. They do this privately. I then invite all the teachers without telling them who selected them to a pre-game practice. Before practice the players stand up and tell the teachers what they mean to them - it can get emotional. The players present the teachers with their game jersey to wear in school that Friday. During the game the PA announcer, announces the player and their teacher. It unites the faculty and players get a kick out of it. Do you limit this to just the grades at your school (9-12)...or do you let them pick a teacher from their entire academic career?

Does anyone know the answer to this:
The NZONE system that is included with the Glazier Season Pass, is it Mazzone’s entire system or is it just a sample of it?

Themes that we used this year: Future Falcons Night (Youth Football teams were recognized. Kids got in free with their jersey) Teacher Appreciation Night Father/Son Night Military Appreciation Night Live Pink Cancer Awareness Night All of these were pretty successful for us and the turnout was great. What did you guys do for father/son night? Did you let them in free, give them something, have a pregame cookout, etc....??

If you use a fire extinguisher for your "smoke" it doesn't count

Coach,
Do you minds sharing the curriculum of the resources you currently have? I am about to buy "You Can Build Championship Culture: Coaches Complete Guide to Everything Off the Field," and would love to have someone to bounce ideas off of and share resources with.
During the off-season, we do a one hour block every Tuesday where we have a life skills training session. Kids will learn to tie a tie, change a tire (you would be surprised how many do not know this), sew a button on their shirt, etc... We also have an hour devoted every Thursday to character development. Now these things we only do with the Varsity group (we only have the JV for an hour each day), but I would love to see us expand that in the future.

I know that Riddell has a grant you can apply for, but I am almost positive it is just for equipment.
Definitely going to do some research on this as I am applying to become the HC at a school that has historically been without funds. I will be following your post and if I find anything else, I will add it to the post

Do any of you guys have senior interviews during the beginning of summer before their senior year starts? This would be a time to go over how they have progressed both in the classroom and on the field, see what summer camps they plan on attending (or should attend), goals for their senior year, expectations of seniors, etc...
If so, do you have a sheet with the questions asked, that you could share with me?
TIA

Does anyone on here have any experience with consolidating student loans? Is it a good idea? How do you go about doing it? I currently make payments on three different loans a month. Private and Federal. Any info would be much appreciated Coach, I'm gonna be folowing your post. My wife and I both are just finishing our masters degrees. Hers is completely finished and I will be finishing mine in early June. Therefore we will be paying 5-6 different loans totaling about $1,400 a month. Between coaching football and baseball, driving an hour to school everyday, and taking our 13yo all over the Southeast for baseball tournaments, etc...I haven't had a chance to do my research yet. However, if there isn't a good solution posted by June, I wiLL definitely be finding one, and will share every thing I find with CoachHuey.com

What I think is useless is practice where coaches and kids are standing around scratching their balls, no purpose, things not really being accomplished. I'd agree that those practices have no benefit and the argument could be made that they're actually a detriment. That said, this past year we played a team from a ghetto area that has ATHLETES. I knew nothing about them until they walked out onto the field and I thought, "We're about to witness a massacre." They had 28 kids and only one of them was not athletic, although he was 6'6", 340 lb jelly roll. The rest looked like they were straight out of the combine or an Under Armour advertisement. One of the other assistants looked at me and said, "I hope all of our kids went to Mass today." As their backs & receivers warmed up I thought they were going to air attack & hang 100 on us. But once the game started, after 3 plays it was, "This is a joke and a waste of our time." The other team was so poorly coached that they were just awful. Their kids were just terrible. After the game I spoke to their AD who said that the coach had a hard time getting kids to practice every day so they only practice 3 days a week. Been a part of the same type of scenario...we were 9-0 going into the last game and the other team was 1-8...if you lined both teams up at their own 45 yard line and determined a winner by athletic ability and how the teams looked physically, you would have thought the records were reversed. But we wore them out on the field 42-6.

JRK, I think you may be on to something here. I played the three major sports in high school. All-state in two of them. Wanted to be the dude with the ball or bat in my hand at the end of the game, even in basketball which quite frankly I was average, at best, at...and I want to be a HFC/AD somewhere in the near future. Now maybe I am a rare breed because I left a school across the road from my house to drive an hour and a half, one-way, to be an assistant at a powerhouse school in hopes that being here and taking on as many responsibilities as possible will prepare me for the road ahead. I am teaching 6 classes instead of the required 5, and completing my masters program to boot. Not saying that to brag or boast or anything of that nature...this is just what I am willing to do for the goals I have for myself. I don't ever watch TV, miss alot of family meals (which I hate), and only really get to spend time with my kids on the weekend. But its something that is important to me and I am trying like hell to accomplish my personal goals. I want to be the guy. I can accept the criticism that comes from running a program. I know that I won't ever make everyone happy, but I am always going to do the right thing when it comes to my athletes and my athletic program. Being at my current school has taught me TONS about how to do this and be very successful. After a while the kids understand what is expected and do what they are supposed to. The parents....many times they never "get it"...but thats ok too. I think this is getting a little off base and maybe reaching just a bit. I say that because when I started this thread I didn't mention at all that I didn't think I could be "the guy", I just said I don't have any desire or feel the need to be the guy. In fact, I think I would probably be a pretty darn good HC and have been told this by many of my coaching peers. The reason I know I could do this isn't because of how fancy I was as a high school athlete (and I was pretty alright) or how I over achieve at my job (which I often do). The real reason is because I've been around and worked with a lot a great coaches who were willing to teach me a lot over the last 17 years. I've also been around a few HC's that definitely gave me a pretty good idea how to NOT do things as well! At the end of the day, I just really really enjoy the game and the kids that I get to teach and mentor. The perception from the outsiders looking in is that a good coach has to be on his way to a HC gig and for me it just hasn't been the case. Wasn't meaning to get off base, only trying to say that different personality types may be what make people want to or not want to be a head coach. I do agree with you that at some point there is so much on the plate of a HFC/AD or HFC that the focus of teaching and mentoring can easily be shifted to the day to day operation of the program.

But I definitely get it with coaches that say they just want to be a Coordinator or position coach. I have a friend who coached for 17 years as a DL coach, guy made chicken salad out of chicken chit most of the time, and turned some fringe kids into kids that ended up at power 5 schools.
Once of the best coaches I have ever seen. Never even wanted to be a coordinator.

1.) Getting every returning player in the weight room on a consistent basis. 2.) Getting new faces in the weight room on a consistent basis. 3.) Motivating all those in the weight room to get back to and this time win a ring. (runner-up last year) 4.) Continue to get better at what we do... I will say that around here, the times we won the ship....before I got here unfortunately... came on the heels of a runner up finish. Kids seemed to have extra motivation in the weight room and on the field to get back to the big game.

Just curious - how many of you who don't want to be a HC were "the guy" as athletes? QB's? Took the last shots? Pitchers? Again - not a knock. Not saying any of that is necessary to be a HC. Plenty of great HC's who weren't that. And one may have nothing to do with the other. I'm more looking at it the other way - wondering whether kids who are "those kids" are more likely to turn into guys who want to be on the spot as the HC too? JRK, I think you may be on to something here. I played the three major sports in high school. All-state in two of them. Have one group of D line up in an even front....have the other group (11 of the extra 15) line up in an even front. Offense huddles in the middle. Offense runs a play, let's just say power right vs the even front....then they turn around and run the same play vs the odd front. You have the ability to get twice the reps on offense and then have your OL work their blocking rules and communication vs different fronts.

My most embarrassing moments relate to lighting kids up for not doing their job. I cringe when I think about a couple times I've hollered at kids. Not me but a fellow assistant coach was fired up and yelling at kids, he completely lost it and moved his bowels in his pants (he had the stomach flu and shouldn't have even been at the game, obviously). It was horrific, he acted like it was nothing. Got through that defensive series and then ran to our locker room to change (fortunately it was a home game and he had a change of clothes. Kids still ride him hard about that. So you're telling us that a guy you coached with literally "lost his $#it"
