Does anyone have a team rules template they would be willing to share? I’m looking to expand the coverage of my rules. Below are a few examples.
- Academic ineligibility - School Detention/suspension - Theft and vandalism - Possession or distribution of illegal substances/objects - Bullying - Inappropriate behavior (towards coaches, officials, spectators, teammates, school staff, etc.) - Unsportsmanlike conduct
These are some examples and as I am curious to see the range of incidents that some of you include. Do you have a point system that results in game and eventually suspension from team? Example 3 incidents result in dismissal from team.

Seriously? That’s your take? The kid was getting choked out and beat in - pure self defense. As I said, I hadn't watched the whole video before posting. I'm also going to wager you've never actually been choked out if that's what you think was happening in that exchange. Please tell me how you would like the kid to react? That was disgusting and please tell us what it’s liked to be choked out. Seriously dude your an a** clown.

Does anyone display a weekly depth chart for the kids to see? I have always posted team goals, statistics, press clippings and things like that. We always discuss two deep but I have never posted before. The reason I ask is for your younger players that would be listed as 3, 4 or 5 on the depth chart. I don't know if that would discourage them or not. We always had depth chart posted in college that could have up to 7 deep. I know that is college but just wasn't sure what all of you do. We are a small rural school typically have 35-40 9-12. Being at a school similar in size I have to ask if a depth chart is really necessary? We have on average maybe 14 guys who actually should be on the field at any given time. We have second teamers and then we have the guys who are the real back ups. Maybe at a place with 70-80 plus a depth chart might be good but at small schools the pecking order is pretty clear to everyone. I'm starting to think same way and maybe just post special teams once regular season starts. We too project to have 14 playing the 22 o/d positions with possibly two others we could plug in if we had too. If I posted a two deep it wouldn't be accurate as my backup safety is a starting corner not Jimmy in 9th grade who shows up on 2 deep. The same goes for multiple positions.

Does anyone give the kids a day off during my the week in season? Currently we don't don't have kids do anything on weekends. We have film/lift on Monday for varsity and JV game Monday. Offense Tuesday, Defense Wednesday, Pre game Thursday and game Friday.
I was thinking of doing film/lift Saturday morning and either giving them off Monday (varsity only) or Tuesday. Tuesday would give JV kids day to recover and varsity kids a day away from football to relax and do schoolwork.
I'm not sure if I'm going to do this but wanted to see if anyone does anything like this.

It was 1995 my junior year in HS. First round of WPIAL playoffs. We were 7-2 and #8 seed playing against 9-0 #1 seed. We were a tough scrappy bunch that didn't give a sh!t who we were playing. Not overly talented but tough as nails. The team we were playing was #1 in state and pitched 7 shutouts in 9 games. The tailback rushed for over 2,000 yards and was in his way to Notre Dame. I remember nobody believed we had any chance of beating them except for ourselves and our staff. We kicked off and stoned them...3 and out. We then proceed to march down the field in no huddle wing-t and score. They were stunned as it was first score of any kind they allowed in 5 games. I remember how loud the crowd was prior to kickoff and how quiet it got. We were pumped. We stopped then again and marched back down the field to kick a FG and go up 9-0 in the 2nd. We had a very good TE who would play at Wake Forest get hurt on our third drive and be out the rest of the game. If anyone that runs Delaware wing T you know how crucial the TE is in your scheme. It changed everything for us on offense. We continued to play great on D and held the Notre Dame Arab to lowest output if season. With our O sputtering we could not hold the lead and they scored with 4 minutes left to take a 14-9 lead. We get in the huddle and I remember the confidence we had. We were all like we have 4 minutes we can do this. We start matching down the field and our SE makes a great 30 yard reception putting us at the 11 yard line with just over 2 minutes left. Plenty of time to run the ball. We call a pass and our drag man looks to be weight open in the end zone. Flat defender reads it and picks it off 2 yards deep in the end zone and runs it back 102 yards. Game Over! They would go on to be state runner up. We were devastated and our high school never won a playoff game after that. The school consolidated last year. I think about that game I swear every day and what could have been.

The HC I played for was a legend at our school and coached there for 29 years with a lot of success. He would always have a few good ones. Once he responded to a player suggesting a play by saying look this is a dictatorship and I'm the d*ck! The best was during camp my junior year. We were a wing t team and we would have a play call that we would shift formations. For example 100 "shift to" 900. The LT who was a senior called Jim messed up on a play. Coach asked Jim what happened and Jim responded by saying he was worried about the shift to. Well the shift had nothing to do with the line and Jim was a senior who had been in the system 3 years. Coach was like shift to! You were worried about the shift to? How about this? Teddy shift to LT, Jim shift to....OUT!!! Everybody died laughing. Unfortunately for Jim he would not get his job back as Teddy was an outstanding player even as a sophomore at the time. I laugh every time I think about it even though it was 21 years ago.

I second those saying Matt Mitchell from Grand Valley. I thought Brandon Staley the DC from John Carroll University was outstanding this year. Great energy and attitude and very approachable.

We have struggled the past two seasons with a young roster. This year all of our projected starters are Juniors and Seniors. Youth and inexperience was used as an excuse for lack of success. This year our theme will be NO EXCUSES!
We will have t-shirts and the saying in our weight and locker rooms.

It makes me laugh when someone complains about kids going both ways and having a lack of depth. Try coaching in a rural setting and having 19 players grades 9-12! I would love to be able to pull kids up from JV or even have a JV team. Our JV is our Varsity. We have only 3 seniors which is good for future. This is our second season at this school and we are trying to build the program. Progress has been slow but moving in the right direction.
Not trying to disrespect anyone. Each situation is different. Right now I can only wish I had your problem.

We are a small rural school with a losing tradition (last winning season 1994). This is our second year at the school and getting kids has been very difficult. We started camp with 23 (freshman included!!!) and suited up 17 last night for practice. Two kids are out for the season, 1 is out with a concussion, 1 is out with shoulder injury, 1 is out with hamstring, and another quit because his mother is battling cancer and wanted to stay home with her (tough home life overall). I have never experienced anything like this. Our numbers were low last year but atleast we had enough to scrimmage in practice.
Keeping morale up is difficult. Coaches do everything we can to stay upbeat and not show frustration to the kids. We have to go 1/2 line and coaches have to step in on scout. School starts on monday with first game that friday the 3rd. We are going to have open tryouts for anyone who would like to come out for the team. We have no choice. We need kids. How can you go to a varsity game with 17 kids??? A few more injuries and possible ineligibility (few kids had academic issues last year) we have no team.
Has anyone else ever gone through this? Have you ever tried to recruit kids after two-a-days? Season is starting to feel like its over before starts.

We have the same problem. Only 23 kids 9-12!!! I'm the DC but also coach OL. 5 varsity coaches. Fortunately for me the other OL coach is very good. When we go 1st team "O" he stays with them while I run the scout team "D". This enables me to concentrate completely on developing players for Defense and not have to worry about our OL as I know they are being coached up properly. We only film practice during two-a-days. Not enough time to look over practice film during season. I get caught up watching opponent film over and over. Need a little time for the wife.

My advice would be to have those juniors who want to play in college attend recruiting camps over the summer.
I played LB at D3 level and was fortunate to start 3 years. I was 5'10" 205 lbs and ran a 4.9 (definitely not D1 stats). I thought I was pretty good and may have a shot to play at a small D1 school. I went to a camp the summer before Sr. year and was shocked by the caliber of athletes there. My LB group included LaVarr Arrington and Ron Graham (started at LB for PSU as well). I knew after that camp I was D2 at best and how truly special you must be to play at D1 level. I turned down a few D2 offers because I thought D3 would be the best situation for me. It was a very humbling experience and I am thankful I went to the camp.

Couple of years ago our left tackle missed a practice. When we asked why he wasn't at practice said because he had to help his neighbor put up a fence. We told him to tell his neighbor that it was football season and he would help him put fences up after the season.
That same season our starting center missed a practice because he had to practice with his rock band. Kid actually thought they were going to make it big.

We are in the same boat as touchdownmaker. We are a small school and this is our first year coming from a successful program. The program has not had a winning season in over 10 years and was 0-9 last year. Friday we started 5 sophs and 1 freshman on defense and lost 63-0. Not all on defense we had a the lone kickoff returned for a score as well as an interception, fumble and a punt return. Besides the fresman starting at ILB on D we have 5 others that play ST. Total of 28 kids on team and 9 are Freshman, only 5 seniors, 2 juniors. It is going to be a long season.

What stretches do you do for pre game? Are there any I should focus on? We do normal leg stretches and neck stretches. After that we do what we call "power flexes" like walking lunges, shuffle punch, things like that. I was just curious to see what everyone does for "normal" stretching.

What criteria do you guys use in assigning letters? Do you use number of plays, percentage of plays, quarters played in? The HC and myself (DC) are trying to figure out a strong method in determining who letters. We don't want to give out a letter for someone who is only on punt team once or twice a game. Curious to see what everyone else does.

How many of you out there are not teachers? We just got hired to take over a program that has not had a winning season since the 90s. They were 0-9 last year. The HC and I have been Jr High coaches together for the last several years. I will the DC but that is besides the point. Our entire staff (8) does not have 1 teacher on it. We will begin practice at 4:30 during the season. Our two-days right now are set up for 4-6pm first session and 730 - 930 pm for the second session. We have workouts twice a week at 5 right now. The turnout is great and the kids attitude has been wonderful. What obstacles do you foresee us encountering? I know there may be some parents upset that we cannot have practice after school. We practiced at 5:00 at the junior high level and never had problems. We are recruiting kids the best we can but it is difficult since we don't have a presence at the school full time. I just curious to hear what some of you think. Any feedback is appreciated. Thanks.
