Many of you know I took a new job this season, leaving a very successful program where I had been for 12 years to take over a dumpster fire.
Quick update- This morning (at Midnight) was the first day we could hit, so we had a Midnight scrimmage. It went as expected (tons of mistakes), but the guys played hard.
Some bright spots and guys who looked good; a lot of "well, we need to fix that/this/him/them" in many areas.
Summer was spotty, but we had a strong core of guys who worked.
We have 58 on the roster (which is up by about 25 from previous years), which, for our level is still a bit low, but we can play a full freshman schedule.
I will say I am cautiously encouraged. Sat AM was a bad practice for a while, but the guys turned it around for the last half. That was a very good sign.
We're still looking to solidify a few spots, but do think we have the pieces to compete with most of our schedule.
There are still days I'm wondering why the hell I did this... but just the football part has been fun.
I'll try to update throughout the season.
Best of luck to you all this fall.

If your guys are learning, trying, and having fun (most important) you'll compete well and it will be a good season.
Keep them healthy and proud, coach!

I am looking forward to your next post regarding your new challenge.
I'm especially interested to hear what you are doing to improve your team's self-efficacy...their belief in their ability to successfully compete vs. the competition that you play.
If this is a "dumptster fire" situation, and these kids have never had success during their football playing days, what is your strategy to provide them with hope and belief that they can indeed be successful vs the same kids that have been beating the daylights out of them for years?

Quick update. We are 1-0- for the first time in 11 years I'm told. We played likely the worst team on our schedule, but played well for the most part. Got up 24-0 after 3 and won 32-16. Killed one drive with a fumble, but moved the ball very well. We even had a TD pass... Played a lot of #2s in the 4th quarter (traveled 36 guys, 34 played). sweep26 We aren't doing anything differently from what I have done elsewhere- but it is new to them. Scouting reports, scout squad organiszation (no standing around unless you are resting; everyone rotates in, etc.), shorter practices (hopefully efficient), pre-practice routines... I guess a lot is new to them. Weight room buy in has been good (almost all in a weights class). Hudl film viewing is over 80% with at least 15 minutes logged. They are doing what we ask- and in some cases are doing more. We also scrimmaged a bigger (rival) school who we don't play this season but have played in the past. We've never beaten them- and probably wouldn't this year, but for a 40 play scrimmage we scored 4 to their 1... our guys were pumped after that (and a single wing team in a scrimmage has an unfair advantage... but I didn't mention that). Probably the biggest thing they feel like we believe in them... and I will be honest, I have been surprised; it's not nearly as bad as advertised. We have some talent. We are just very young (start 7 sophs. on offense, 4 sophs and 5 juniors on D), but there is good buy in. The small senior class we have is on board as well and have been good leaders. We now have 56 on the roster (lost 4, gained 2). Not all are football players and we've had to let a few go (not accountable, responsible, etc. regarding making it to practice and/or communicating). A few guys kind of on that fence made a pretty quick decision to stay or go. Those who've stayed have been a nice surprise (not so much in terms of talent, but attitude and effort). I did take one back with some reservation- he's on "double secret probation" right now, but might make it. After all, it is about helping kids become men more than anything else. We have a tougher game this week - and it's a 4 hour road trip. But it's been a lot of fun so far. We still really haven't had a bad practice since that Saturday morning I mentioned. Very focused this week thus far.

I don't intend this to be a weekly update, but we have a bye this week and I have some time to post.
The bad: we lost 26-6. Down 12-6 right before half and gave up a TD pass with 40 seconds left on 4th & goal. Our DB played it about as well as he could- their guy made a great play (and if we had replay, he was out at the 1).
We moved the ball well... just inconsistent. Missing our FB (shoulder injury - out 4-6 weeks) hurt us more than I thought it would.
The ugly: The score before half... Had another 4th down conversion we gave up on a double tipped pass.
Blocking by our backs leaves much to be desired.
We really only run two formations (four if you count right and left), yet we still line up wrong WAY too often.
The good: This game was a running clock at half last year (which will be a common theme throughout the rest of the schedule) and we were in it, until their last score with about 5 minutes left
Our DBs (who scared the hell out of me... not in a good way) played well... Maybe outstanding. We had a pick and several breakups. Gave up 1 TD pass on a great play by them, but held them in check (They scored 27 last week against a top 5 team throwing for 250+... They had 103 passing).
IF we are able to clean up mistakes, we might surprise someone.
Hopefully we get some or that done in our bye week.
If we can find a way to win 2 of the next 7, we will average 1 win a year over the last 8 years.
Next up for us #2 ranked team in our class (they will probably be #1, since #1 lost Friday, albeit to a solid program in the largest class).
That's why I'm having tequila now...
Hope all are having a good Labor Day weekend... And best of luck to everyone on here- whether you are still coaching or not..

Single Wing. Have been for about 20 years now (previously Wishbone). Should have stuck with the bone! I still love watching wishbone- and we still run it a little (we shift from under center to SW). As much as I loved the wishbone- we never made a state title game when we ran it. We've made 4 since the change (not entirely a scientific study though... I was a better coach with better players- most of those years). The best team I had though was running wishbone- but I got out-coached by a legend in the playoffs that year. That was almost 30 years ago...it still bothers me. I'll give an update this weekend. We play the current #1 team... it could get ugly.

Update: Week 4 (or as larrymoe calls it- hard Knocks without the BS)
We lost. 46-6.
Not surprising. #1 ranked team, D1 offered lineman, D2 offered QB (they may both be commits... not sure), and a few other guys with offers. From what I've seen in our classification, they are far and away ahead of everyone else.
We turned the ball over 5 times- 2 fumble returns for TDs.
That being said, we moved the ball well- we just coughed it up a lot. Physically we matched up much better than I thought we would have. When we held on to the ball, we had some nice drives. On our 2nd drive we made it to the 20 before fumbling, and we scored on our 3rd drive. Our passing game was decent.
Our secondary gave up some plays- mostly on misplays of the ball or bad angles or just having bad alignment at the snap- but everyone knows their responsibility. Now we need to learn how to do our jobs well.
We did a nice job against their RBOs and quick game and with one exception held their running game in check.
Take out about 6 plays in that game (the two fumble returns, two other fumbles and two explosive scoring plays by them), and I would be really happy with that game. Our guys never quit and played hard throughout the game. Even our #2s ended the game moving 70+ years against their backups where we had a 1st and goal at the 4 when time expired (and we had 3 timeouts left... but there was no need to drag that on).
The other team who beat us knocked off #2... so we've played two of the better teams in our class- and while we lost we were not totally outclassed in either game.
We still have issues. We played 4 fullbacks last night. The best one is our starting TB, but we need to keep him at TB. We should get our regular fullback back after next week.
We also lost a starting guard this week (ACL tear) and possibly lost our wingback to a broken wrist.
We had a guy do really well in our JV game Monday who can step in at Wing (once he learns what is going on... he's not very well versed in our offense to say the least). We also moved a guy from the backfield to Guard- he did well and may end up being better than our injured starter.
Our last non-region game is Friday. Outside of the fact that it is a 430 mile drive, I'm looking forward to this game. We may actually have a shot in this one:

430 miles for a non con? P!SS on that Any time I don't have to deal with the "hour of exercise in the yard" with Cell Blocks C and D (aka. my 4th & 6th hour), it's a win.
44special North Dakota. Northwest corner to southeast corner. Damn long (and unnecessary, in my opinion) trip. We're kind of limited in options though... We only have 55 11-man teams in the state. Most AAA won't stoop down to play us AA (at least those close by). And class A is locked in to their region schedules this week.
We do have a 9-man team close by...

9 man is only in ND, SD and MN. Someone on here said Oregon had it as well (not sure either way on that).
We rarely play on Saturdays. If we do, it's usually because of officials or fields being used by multiple teams.
When I coached in Wyoming 30 some years ago we played all our games on Fridays at 3:00 because almost no one had lights.

Most of my 31 years as a HC we didn't travel 430 miles the whole season much less for one game!
But my state is more populous than ND, and there is more than one HS per county.

Most of ours are within roughly an hour, little longer for the high traffic schools/routes.
In the past we took long in season trips that were usually one of those ESPN sponsored games, occasionally we took a 2-4 hour trips just to play a good game.
We have done SC to New Jersey Cincinnati (flew) New Orleans Louisville Nashville Orlando Atlanta (multiple) South Beach (flew) Hoover AL Tallahassee Chesapeake Bay Va
just missed the trip to Anaheim

Very disappointing performance Friday.
426 miles/ 7.5 hours with a stop.
On the opening drive, we came out and drove the ball for 7 1/2 minutes and scored.
The next series we got them in to a 3rd & 12 just over midfield. They completed a post who beat our guy by 10 yds. That was the first of many wheels that fell off.
We lost 41-14. We NEVER made a defensive stop (not counting the end with subs in). They ran A gap power all over us and threw 2 weakside fades for TDs. Also had a RB seam for a TD. We actually kind of covered the RB seam, they were just better (and we were probably in the wrong coverage).
Once they got up by a score, we had no energy and basically just went through the motions to finish the game. With 4 minutes left in the first half, we were down 7-6. It was 21-6 at half.
I really thought we had a shot in this one. After watching the film on the 7 hour trip home, all I saw was us gaining what seemed like 7 yards every play (defense was a different story entirely). Twice we had 4th down measurements that came up inches short.
Due to 2 penalties illegal procedure (when our guys said they were saying our snap count), and a highly questionable "helping the runner" call, we had a 4th & 13 from their 25. We picked up 12 on 4th down.
The entire night... really the entire season has been like that.
We will probably not win another game this year... but we'll keep plugging away.

As a former ball-control coach I know how paramount it is to complete a long drive with a score of some kind (FG or TD), but preferably a TD. It can be worked on in practices. Used to run what I called perfect plays during our team session on offense practice days. Every play we ran had to be perfect. Huddle, huddle break, alignments, fundamentals, ball security, passes caught, hustle, plus yardage, EVERYTHING. If the play wasn't perfect we moved the team back 5 yards and they had to run it again. They had 10 plays (5 runs and 5 passes) to run from the 35 to get the ball into the end zone. Sometimes, the drill lasted for 20 minutes with only four plays being run. However, the more we ran the drill the better we got at it resulting in scoring drives during games. Helped us with our focus, discipline, confidence, and CONDITIONING. Helped us to become more consistent resulting in fewer mistakes during games.

We probably need to do more situational stuff... I like that "perfect play" drill. We used to do that one day a week. We do an "overtime" right now, but that's about it. We also used to do Third Down Tuesdays... but where we are as a program, we are still learning our offense. It's like we are still in pre-season camp. Every time I think we know something, we don't and we have to go back.
BY FAR the most challenging job of my career.

We are now 1-4.
But things might be looking up. We still can't hang on to the damn ball... and we still struggle trying to cover anybody.
We played a team last night that is ranked #4 (not to knock them, but that might be a bit high... but everyone in our classification is kind of like the Big 12... I can't figure anyone out at this point).
Last year this game was 42-0 at half and a running clock the 2nd half.
We were down 21-14 at half. More painful was we were tackled on the 1 yard line as time expired (completed a 23 yard pass from their 24) to end the half.
We got some defensive stops. We had guys rally to the ball in all phases. We did not look like the same team as last week, for sure.
We had around 360 yds. in offense and around 310 rushing (we actually out-gained them). We still are careless with the ball (4 fumbles- 2 lost and one INT on the only pass we attempted in the 2nd half).
The score ended up 39-22. They scored on a fade with 1:10 left in the game. Apparently, our sophomore CB was asleep so they just threw it. I'm not sure that was entirely necessary... but we do have a cap of 17 points when it comes to tie-breakers... so maybe it was. I was more mad about our Corner just being lulled to sleep and reading run on a 3 step drop.
We lost 4 key guys during the 2nd half- but I think we'll get most- if not all- back soon (hopefully some this week).
One of the biggest things I was happy about was we never quit playing hard. We had back to back turnovers in the 3rd qr. and were down 33-14- they were throwing deep every play and we picked it off- and then drove 84 yards for a score to cut it to 33-22 with about 6 minutes left.
We didn't get the onside kick... and they converted a bunch of 3rd & 4th downs so we never really had much of a chance then (our QB, FB, TB and strong Guard were all out by then anyway).
A lot of our guys played well. Now if we can just hold on to a football...

1-5.
This is like the movie Groundhog Day. We relive the same game (almost) every week.
End of 1st Q down 7-6. With 1:12 left in the first half we were down 14-6 and had the ball.
Fumbled, gave up a score, then went 70 yards in 3 plays to get tackled on the 5 as time expired.
Lost 45-6.
We work on things all week and then don't do them in a game.
Our RBs went back to not seeing running lanes; their guys saw their openings in HD... in the EZ view most of our holes looked bigger, but they read theirs; we didn't.
Starting QB takes off and runs too early. Had 2 passes called in the first series that ended up in a run of 1 and sack of -10. Both times, our primary receiver was open.
Backup QB throws well and sees better- but not much of a runner and is a little more careless with the football.
We are now kind of running a 2 system QB- one for runs one for passes ("runner" QB was 1-1 for 28 yds., but took off/got sacked the other 4 passes called. The other QB was 4-9 passing for 91 yds.).
Up front (OL/TE) we start 5 sophomores and a junior, so the hope is we will get better... someday.
Homecoming for us meant a total lack of focus and one starter being injured in homecoming activities (he played, but missed practice a few days, so he didn't start. Wasn't worth much when he came in anyway...).
The biggest issue for me is we collectively quit midway through the 3rd quarter.
I am at a point where I am really questioning my decision to take this job and my abilities at turning something like this around.
The team we played is a good team (new school; first year of playing varsity- split from the largest school in the state and last years biggest class state champion... they have a few seniors but are mostly juniors), but we could've played with them- and we did for about 28 minutes.
Those last 20 minutes are killers for us though.
We go on the road next week to one of the four 3-3 teams in our region (conference). It's a 316 mile drive (one way).
End of rant/update.
