This is from ESPN's article on the Alabama head coaching position. What Nick Saban said about some of the reasoning behind leaving:
But Alabama's 27-20 overtime loss to Michigan in the CFP semifinal at the Rose Bowl on Jan. 1 was a hard one for Saban to digest. Not only was Saban upset about the way his team played, he was especially disheartened about some of the things that happened afterward -- in the Rose Bowl locker room and back on campus, when he met with some of the players.
"I want to be clear that wasn't the reason, but some of those events certainly contributed," Saban said of his decision to retire. "I was really disappointed in the way that the players acted after the game. You gotta win with class. You gotta lose with class. We had our opportunities to win the game and we didn't do it, and then showing your ass and being frustrated and throwing helmets and doing that stuff ... that's not who we are and what we've promoted in our program."
Once back in Tuscaloosa, as Saban began meeting with players, it became even more apparent to him that his message wasn't resonating like it once did.
"I thought we could have a hell of a team next year, and then maybe 70 or 80 percent of the players you talk to, all they want to know is two things: What assurances do I have that I'm going to play because they're thinking about transferring, and how much are you going to pay me?" Saban recounted. "Our program here was always built on how much value can we create for your future and your personal development, academic success in graduating and developing an NFL career on the field.
"So I'm saying to myself, 'Maybe this doesn't work anymore, that the goals and aspirations are just different and that it's all about how much money can I make as a college player?' I'm not saying that's bad. I'm not saying it's wrong, I'm just saying that's never been what we were all about, and it's not why we had success through the years."
It did say earlier that he had told the AD the year before that he was wearing out and the time was coming and it was a year-to-year thing at this point.

When or if schools stop being on the names of the jerseys, many casual fans will be gone. I imagine enough to affect the numbers in a meaningful way. My wife watches most Purdue basketball and football games because she is an alum. If teams are no longer associated with schools, those views will dwindle. I think that saves college football. I agree the rich guys will figure it out. There's too much money for it to die. It's like the two party system. It sucks but it will protect itself. No, there still will be college teams, but there is a possibility that it will be more of the FCS calliaber players at the Purdue's. While the top tier players go straight into minors (just like baseball is now type). I don't think college football will die, just what we think of when we think college football will change. But that is what will lead to a drastic change in ratings. As soon as it is "minor" leagues. And then if the actual college football is now not top tier, people are not going to be as crazy about watching it. If they can somehow keep the majority of people still perceiving it as college football, it will be fine or even better. I know some people are saying that there will be a super conference or split or teams just using the college's names, and that MIGHT work, but it could and most likely will accelerate the perception of it being minor leagues.

Football is dying from the ground up. Boxing died out and baseball has been dying because societal values change among generations. Increasingly, more and more kids could give two craps about football. It may not die in my lifetime, but eventually football will not be the #1 sport in America. The country is changing, and our tastes in sports will change with it. The television numbers don't support that but... I guess only time will tell. Meaning what? Overall viewers, or by age group?

I just came here to talk about CPJ. You are right, time will tell? I guess another question is the value to a casual gambling fan vs. a diehard, go to all the games and watch all the rivals, and go to the bowl game, etc kind of fans and if some significant number of those move away without being replaced? Viewership is up, you are right... but I guess it is hard for me to get around the fact that I love college football more than anyone else I know and if I am becoming disenchanted with it, I can't imagine many others aren't... but again I could be wrong. Maybe you are right and many people won't care. I think a big part of it for me is also, if it turns into a NFL lite, why not just watch the NFL? On another note, the interview was great and I am a big fan of CPJ.

As I mentioned above... they have ALWAYS played "exhibition" games on January 1st. But once playoff games were made official, now those exhibition games are often referred to as meaningless. There is definitely a non zero chance that interest will wain if the players just become paid athletes that are part of a team licensing mascot and colors from a University.

A lot of college football fans just watch a good game but a lot only care about THEIR team's game. As large as the viewership for OSU-Michigan may have been, a lot of people were watching another channel where Wake Forest, San Diego State, or Syracuse were playing. Some of the people watching OSU were watching on phones while they were sitting at their alma mater's game. Maybe what's happening will be a mash-up of the NFL, with the super league acting that part for the media, and the rest being the regional MLB. Is that really a helluva lot different than the way things are and really have been? Go back and look at the AP Top 20 from 20, 30, 50 years ago and it doesn't look much different from today's.

Again, if they can continue to keep people perceiving it is college football instead of minor league football, then it will thrive. But, unlimited transfers who are holding out for more money with no structure on transfers or money combined with the possibility of teams not really being Alabama but just licensing their name, image, mascot, etc and a super league forming of 30 plus teams can definitely make the average fan, donor, alumni feel that it is now just minor league football. And, if it becomes minor league football and the NFL wins their court case to play on Saturdays, then college football will be forever altered. But, that is a lot of if, ands, and buts. So, you are right. Ha.

maybe you're right
but the television data doesn't support that... it shows record numbers of people watching playoff games between 2 non-traditional rivals and more people watching meaningless bowl games between non-traditional rivals this year then in any year past.
And in games with traditional rivals, record numbers. Mich vs OSU set regular season best since 2011 and highest CFB on Fox game at 19.1M, up 11%
Bama / Auburn also had 9.1M up 45% from last year but down from 2021, probably cause Auburn was struggling.
The changes have already started, we all see where this is trending... towards school pay for play... and yet more people watch these big games then ever before.
So ya, there's going to be pay for play, there will be more super conferences playing big games and millions will watch.
If I could buy stock in CFB right now, that's a good investment.

C'mon men. When you get right down to brass tacks there is only ONE common denominator that has created this entire F'ing mess. GREED! For the love of Mike it has come down to just that! Used to be it was about the team, the team, the team. Not anymore. Our sport is hemorrhaging because the word "WE" has been replaced by too much I, ME, MINE. The networks and their lure of money have contributed greatly to this whole picture because of THEIR OWN greed! Entertainment = GREED. Super Conferences = GREED. Playoffs = GREED. Transfer Portal = GREED. NIL = GREED. Coaches in today's world are dealing with a complete different kind of animal, and older coaches like Saban aren't willing to put up with it and are getting out because of it. I would venture to guess that guys like PJ would be included in that group. Longevity in being a college head football coach has always been tough, but now...likely aren't going to see many (if any) of those guys anymore.

With the "your only as good of a coach as your record" mindset from society and some of our peers, Coaches are willing to do Whatever It Takes to try and get the win column much higher than the losing collum. It's only a different type of animal now cause people don't have to hide anymore about paying players.

It's only a different type of animal now cause people don't have to hide anymore about paying players. Well, sort of. The unlimited transferring and the unlimited number of years you can play (joking - or maybe not) are an even bigger part of this. Also, when the "bagman" was paying players in the past, the going rate for Cam Newton was $180,000. That doesn't even get a backup RB now.

Agreed! From one old fart to another the only way I'm watching a Friday night college game is if it's between two Top 10 teams, and you can bet the networks won't be showing THAT kind of game on a Friday night! Friday Night Lights IS high school football.

The fans have “ruined” the game because they care so much about winning that coaches and administrators are pushed to find every possible edge.
1. Coaches are making eight figures to run an extracurricular activity. Even coordinators are making seven figures. Ridiculous. Getting CFB back to sanity should start with cutting that down to low six figures. Plenty of people can coach sound football, and there are probably more life lessons (as if anyone cares about that) to be learned from high school coaches who can’t throw infinite money at every problem than college coaches who spend 99% of their waking hours in a cave, practice field, or stadium.
2. Fans not only want to see their teams win but see NFL caliber players doing it. Fans want to see a future first round pick run that bubble screen (regardless of whether or not he can spell his name), not a future accountant who runs a 5.0 40.
3. I support NIL because I don’t think it’s fair that some hot freshman girl can make bank on IG, TikTok, etc., but some of the most talented and recognizable people on campus (even the state or country) cannot. The world has far more opportunities for young people today than it did a generation ago. College athletes should be able to cash in on that too.
4. People say they won’t watch, but they will.
5. One day football might become a major in itself. Why not? It’s a profession too.
