My biggest thing, especially with unpaid guys, is be there when you say you will be there.
When I was a head coach, we had a guy we had to keep on staff that would say he was going to be there and then not show. Say he was going to be out of town and then show up.
It was frustrating because we would like to be able to use the time efficiently and make sure everyone is productive.

Yep, these day's a well planned organized summer program is a non-negotiable to be successful. The conundrum is doing that without burning out either your players or coaches before the competitive season starts. Or getting mad at your players for not being at some summer stuff before practice even begins. And losing some coaches after awhile when it can be hard to replace them. Very fine line. When you're a HS HFC you have to realize football is not as important to everybody else as it is to you.
Yes, it is certainly a fine line. When I was interviewing potential ACs, we talked about the off-season and I would state "We don't necessarily need a 27/7/365 coach but we can't really have an August to November guy either."

Where are you coaching... 2012? at my 1st AC gig in 1993, as an adjunct AC, I was paid $1800 I got $5K this year to coach a 9 week MS season. 1 week of tryouts, 2 weeks of 'camp,' and 6 games. Started the week before Labor Day and done by Halloween.

You make more than I do as a head coach.

Thank goodness most of us don't do it for the paycheck. Almost double what I pulled as a HS head coach, too. BUT We had no helmets (3 schools loaned some, some players had to buy them), ancient shoulder pads, no footballs (I bought 2, had 1 donated), no mouthpieces (teacher donated them), no access/keys to the field paint stuff but had to paint the field some how, no budget, and only 1 stipend to give out to an AC. It was a long azz 9 weeks.

Yeah, I inherited an AC who was pretty blunt: "I'll be there for camp in July but that's it." I wasn't thrilled with that attitude but a) he was a quality coach and b) he was upfront about it. With that being said, that statement removed him from consideration for any coordinator position. He has been the school's OL coach for 5 years; he ended up being the assistant OL/TE coach.

Seriously - that's the most you ever made?! Nope. That part's even worse. That was I made my last few years. It had been a little higher but during a budget crunch they cut all stipends by 10%.

At my last HC job I got ~$4450 every year. Nothing for Off-Season, nothing extra when we made playoffs. Was driving 20 minutes one way to the school when gas prices were between $3.50 and $4.00 a gallon (was not a teacher). I figured out that with everything I did (including at home such as film) I was making about $.37 an hour after taxes. Good thing I wasn't in it for the money.
