Friday night will be my last game after 49 years of coaching. People have asked me now for a number of years how long I was going to keep going. I'd say as long as I could keep doing the job the way I wanted and as long as it was fun. Others who had retired told me, when it's time, you'll know. They were right. I've gotten to the age where, particularly these last two covid affected seasons, I just don't have the energy it takes to do the job the way I want to do it. Many of the changes surrounding education and football have also become such that they have just added more and more burden to the job.
I've got a lot of concerns about where the sport is headed. It seems, particularly in our state and particularly among the larger schools, that you can't expect to championship level good unless you're bringing in somebody else's talent to play for you. I've never believed that was what high school sports was about. I see us more and more getting away from the core values high school football is supposed to teach. Maybe I'm just an old dinosaur in those beliefs.
I will say, I've felt better this week than I have in a while and I'm looking forward to the beach life......we'll see how I feel when August rolls around.

Coach, I don't know you from Adam, BUT 49 years is a long time to do anything. There's no telling how many lives you've impacted, you give this young whipper snapper hope to make it that long(only 8 years in), and for that I thank you. Truly an inspiration to those young guns and up and comers!
ENJOY the R&R Coach, I'd say its well deserved! God Speed!

I'll first offer the books, etc, to current staff and other coaches I've mentored over the years. I've always made anything I had digital available to anyone who wanted copies of any of it. I'll keep some for sentimental reasons or because I'm a hoarder. I used to do some clinics, always gave any of the stuff I did at clinics away to anyone who asked....I think there might even be something left in the Glazier vault from way back....although anything there has been modified over the years. I've given stuff to people on here who've asked. I don't know what I'm going to do with film.....download it since I won't always have HUDL access......not how that will work with finding stuff by play or formation, etc. Got some I've saved as teaching film and install film which will be easy for me to access (like I'll ever need it). Some film is still on VCR for crying out loud. Film I saved off HUDL in the past or stuff from pre-HUDL is a nightmare to go through looking for clips of a specific thing.....if anyone has experience with that or has suggestions let me know. Notes I took at hundreds of clinics are pretty much indecipherable since I have a scribbly handwriting and it's all on notepads except for recent after rocketbook.....so that's pretty worthless to anyone----but I heard them all---Bowden, Holtz, Paterno, Osbourne, Ross, Devaney, Ford, Howard, Dietzel.......I can't even recall them all.....(none match Wooden, however)

Coach, congratulations on your career. I’m in year 45 and am in the same boat. Probably my last season. My health problems have made it so I no longer can give all I should. Had a bout with cancer and I’m pretty much exhausted all the time. I love coaching football and will miss it. Mostly the camaraderie of the coaches office and the lockerroom.

What a run! I can only imagine how you've changed lives - not just directly but also how the lives you've impacted have also impacted others. Well done.

I only did 22, but I think you'll find August is a lot easier than you think. Especially if it's your decision and you're at peace with it. There's a lot of really cool things that happen in the fall.

49 years, wow, that is amazing. Im calling it done after 17 years. I enjoy the game on Fridays but I have started to detest the "grind" of off-season and a bundle of other things associated with the job. Ive coached or been on a football team since 1993. I don't know what fall looks like without football or summer for that matter. Congrats coach.

You live in a town and play for the town that's supposed to be high school football. This is what makes it special and different than college and pros. Congrats on the longevity and career.!

A few years ago I thought I was done. 46 years coaching football as a head coach, coordinator, assistant, and volunteer. However when August came around a retired mentor of mine told me a friend of his was looking for a line coach, and he told his friend about me. In short, I met with his friend, and three years later I just completed my 49th year coaching football. Mentally I still feel I have much to give. However...physically I'm not the stallion I used to be. Still trying to decide if 49 is enough, or do I end it on 50 when I turn 70.

One day at a time. tell me about this film breakdown gig? Yup I helped with an offensive install this season, but it was not my intent to be on the field coaching. The program I helped went from 1-14 over the past two years (5 game Spring COVID season) to 5-6 and a playoff win. Not earth shaking, but a step in the right direction. I also helped breakdown film for a couple of coaching friends in different parts of the country.

I did scouting report write-ups and some offensive game time spotting.
We had a game where the regular OC had to go out of town and I ended up calling the game from the press box. The result was a 39-0 win over a heavily favored team.
Some times the magic comes back for a little while........I'd be lying if I said I didn't miss that part.
