was reading a post about wing t stuff and wing t books and it made me think, I know a dangerous thing anyhow Being here since the start, I have a metric ton of digital football stuff. playbooks, drill manuals etc. Every new coach on staff I have shared that stuff with to help them and to spread the game. However, books? Who reads books anymore? it's all digital yo!, books are kryptonite I had always thought my coaching books and collection of coaching stuff would be given to a guy on staff, or maybe even just offered up for free on here depending on if there was no one on staff worthy of giving it all too, or if no one on staff wanted it (which would be the same thing in my mind) not to brag or whatever, but I have a once in a lifetime career kid in the league as a qb who wants to be a head college coach someday You might be able to dig and find out who it is, but this isn't a brag thread, just a cool thing, so I am not going to name drop like others (bill) might have done, he's just a great kid with a great young wife with his whole life in front of him, with the financial awesomeness that being in the nfl can create and secure his family's future (dude's going to have wicked athlete kids) He's a smart as hell kid that knows he won't play forever, and knows what he wants to do when he gets done. He wants to be a coach, and to work his way up to a head college coach. NFL coach at some point maybe.,,,, but college coach for sure. I told him I was retiring and knew what he wanted to do/be when done playing as per our talks about life etc. I asked if he wanted my football library. "I would be honored coach, will make my office look like I know stuff" I said, only if you actually look at it and do "yes sir" I think this kid really will devour the mountain of stuff that I accumulated over the years He came up to the school and I shared some of my most treasured stuff that I had gotten from this place and my network in TXHSB over the years. We talked about this and that thing being the "mcveigh" of stuff to always look back at for ideas to make what was once old new again to make himself look smart. He was super appreciative and understood. I plan to come out of retirement and work for him if he wants me to as a "life skills" guy at some point here in the next few years if he asks me (I think he would) as I am done as an on field coach with the offense of the day that is really cool that he has learned. I just can't do it at the level he would need anymore as I am a triple guy that ate that kool aid As an NFL qb he has farrrrrr surpassed my knowledge in many many ways and we both know that,, and it's cool. proud long story short, when he was on break, he came up to the school and took home a huge box of my football library, like all of it, so he could have in his office at some point after reading and to use as a resource. It was kind of funny, he wouldn't let me carry it as it was so big and heavy it would "hurt the old man" lol, he always had some shhhhit in his neck, ,love the kid That is my story. Does anyone else have a story of where/how/why they gave all their football library of stuff away? or what is your plan to get rid of it, extend the legacy, pass it on kind of thing?man just typing that made me tear up a bit just thought it was a subject/topic worth discussion here

And Kudos for recognizing that the name drop is extremely irrelevant and actually takes away from most situations. I dont have a story about giving stuff away, as I haven’t yet. The first thoughts that came through my head while reading this though was “would my stuff be of much value”. My defensive stuff comes from a time where your day 1 install was against 21 personnel- and then your defense adjusted from that. Offensive stuff, Tom Smythe’s double slot offensive book was “cutting edge” I believe I know the value of those type of foundational resources, but would others be able to utilize them or would it be too hard to absorb those in a world where everyone is sidecar gun/ pistol 10/11 (but not a real TE) zone read let my athlete run around and make me look good unless the other guys athlete makes him look better world?

I think it would certainly be of value. They may run into it at some point. Or at least elements of it. It was EASY to tell the last few years who had knowledge of defending triple option and who did not. It was also interesting to have defensive staff ask me to come look at a play or two or whatever because they saw a wrinkle they hadn't seen before, then if I knew (sometimes) that's a wing t thing, or a triple option thing, or a whatever---I could usually just pull the book from my library at school or from home and have em read up on it. Just this last season we had a 1st year coach that we encouraged to ask questions or bring up ideas. They weren't any good in and of themselves, but they sometimes sparked some good conversation that may have eventually led to some stuff we might have put in. Anyhow, he came up with some unsound screen play. When all else went home, I stayed and talked with him about 3 basic screen ideas 1. protection screen 2. misdirection screen 3. wr screens that's how I lump em together. Then I brought him a couple of books to read up on. About a week later I watched in amusement as he was now the expert talking to one of the young defensive coaches all about screens. It was kinda cool. BTW--It occurred to me that the QB kid said to me the other day---"when the nfl is done with me" He knows it won't last long so is preparing accordingly.

The coolest thing that happened in regards to stuff being given away, when my first boss, well on his way out the door, would have stuff lying around in the office, “Help yourself.” Practice is over. All the other coaches have gone home. Office locked so last person to leave doesnt need a key. I cannot work in the school system and a miserable student academically. I walk out with wishbone manual, handwritten by the man himself, afca manual dating back to the 60’s. Free to go through vhs tapes and see what is on them and make dvds of anything i like. I even got a playbook most assuredly from a guy who a whiff in the nfl. Every day, pretty much my entire time their. To young and way to dumb to understand the opportunities.

Delivered newspaper then came to work. He would be at the office well into the evening, being HFBC and AD, smoking cigars on campus. Post games were an event, win or lose. Hard living man. at one point, he had coaches choice catalogue, he hands it to me…and starts, never finishes, to me to pick what I want. I wouldnt have known if it was puffed or stuffed.

I knew I wanted to get into coaching while I was still a high school student.
My senior year of college, one of my former coaches (was a college head coach at one point) sent me a giant box of books. It had everything from biographies to NFCA magazines. Back in those days it was harder to find information. Particularly as a young guy who didn't have a ton of access. Anyways, I found a biography signed by Bobby Bowden. I tried to give it back and he wouldn't take it. Years later he officiated my wedding.

Tog, you bring up a great discussion question. I just finished my 23rd year overall and know that at some point I will want to be done here within the next 10 years or so. Like you, I have a lot of stuff. I have often thought about what would I do with it? Who is worthy (as you said) of taking it? A big fear is will they value it as much as I did.

My 12yr old son is very interested in "Daddy's Stuff." The other night he found my old Single Wing Book and wanted to see it in action. Good ol' youtube! First thing he said was "I'm running this when I coach. Can you run this out of a spread?"
TEAR. IN. EYE. lol
Hopefully I live to see him do it!

At age 70, tonight might be the last game I coach. Don't know for sure yet. The rapidly declining health of my in-laws will be a strong factor in my decision. My wife (only child) needs help caring for them (94, 93 years old). When I go out the door, I haven't decided what I'll do with my "stuff". It's a collection I started in '75. A lot of books (that was the format of choice then), more VHS tapes (are there still VCR's around?), and many DVD's. There are things on many types of offenses . . even a Texas Slot T playbook. We've been Wing T for the past 15 years so there's a lot of material on that offense, too. Any suggestions for what I should do when the time comes that I clean out my football library?

What a strange feeling. Lost both my inlaws last year, one during the season, was really tough on the wife. One of the reasons I have hung it up. I spent way too many a year away from her. As for who to give your stuff to? offer it up on ebay? off it up here? anyone on staff interested or worthy? any former players that are coaching or will be? those are the only ideas I can come up with. Heck, maybe scan all the books and post em here? Upload those vhs to digital and let's see it? Would at least give ya something football to do. Just spitballin. Congrats on a long career. I am sure you have impacted many young folks in great ways.
