buildings, equipment, paintings, whatever
do you know of some weird or strange stuff?
I know a place in a very downtown urban environment, their field house/weight room/ locker rooms used to be an abortion clinic
that's the weirdest one I know
I just recalled that the other night and thought it would make for some interesting stories here

Located across from a dog food plant.
There are some hot August days where you can taste it in the air.

In high school, one of our opponents only had goal posts on one side of the field because about 20 feet or so past the endline on the other was a cliff. At the bottom of the cliff were bulls.
Isidore Newman School (Mannings, Beckham Jr) - From about the 35 in on one side of their field is bounded by a cemetery.

I’ve told this story on hear but I will go again but the quick version. Basically we had this middle school coach who had a hook prosthetic for one arm. When kids wouldn’t do what they were supposed too he would try to pinch their testicles with it. He coached the line so when they were doing stuff he would be behind them and if they weren’t low enough he would reach up under their but with that thing and get em.
As a kid I just thought it was odd and just wanted to completely avoid it. As an adult I am disturbed by it. I have a son and no way I would allow that to happen.
It was never anything sexual or anything like that but still really weird.

In college one of our opponents put the visitors on the sideline by the stands, building, parking lot, etc... While putting themselves on the far sideline away from everything by the water. Thought it was weird, they also had the old turf/concrete.
The other of the top of my head is the layout of visiting locker rooms. Some of those were strange.

I’ve had a lot of season where we put the opponent by the stands. It’s less distracting for our players and they can see the fans reactions. Let the opponents hear all the cheerleaders and fans.
I played in an older stadium once that had the concrete bleachers but the way it was constructed it made it look like they were cut into the side of a mountain. The field was surrounded by a fence which is common but this was the 10 ft tall security fences you see at a business. Including the angle overhangs to prevent you from climbing over the top. It may or may not of had the razor/barbed wire at the top. The fence also had a red mesh material so people couldn’t stand outside and watch. Once you walked in they shut the gates behind you. It was like playing in some kind of cage/pit death match.

One school I was at our halftime space, because school-lockerroom were a long walk away, was bus garage where they washed the buses. Floor was always wet and it had only two (Men's and Women's) one-seater bathrooms.
Been to two places where visitors used an elementary classroom as lockerroom because field was not at home school, including one D-III college.
One stadium we played at the north end of field was a sidewalk away from the school so extra points banged off the building, and benches were built into the concrete stands which abutted almost right up to the coaches' box.
At another one end of the field was separated from a street with homes on opposite side only by a fence and sidewalk so kicks often struck a house.
Many years ago we played at a school where there was no space in press box for opponents' coaches. They had a "crow's nest" on a light pole you had to climb up behind visitor's stands.

One of schools we play has the visitor "box" as a standing area with wooden fence in the stands. We had a locker room with the bathroom at one end of a horse shoe layout. The bathroom opened to a sink and a toilet beside the sink with no privacy walls.

I got several stories. I will start with one then maybe some more later since I got camp this week. Princeton, MO old football field had on one side of the end zone where it went directly into a hill after the out of bounds. The other end zone was only 5 yds deep and right outside the end zone the land dropped straight down about for about 30 yards.

When the school system got the funds to add play clocks to all the facilities their HC refused. Privately he said the refs always gave you a few seconds longer without them and he wanted to shorten the games lol

Used to coach against a school that only had stands on one side of their homefield; because on the opposite side of the field, less than 15 yards away from the sideline was an active train track. There was a fence between the tracks and the field, but there was only enough room on that sideline for the home team.
About 2 or 3 times a game a train would go barreling by. Also, the back corner of one of the endzones dropped off about 4 feet for some reason, I saw a kid run a fade route there, and just disappear.

Adds a new meaning to the term "trainwreck" when you have a bad game 😄

Been to two places where visitors used an elementary classroom as lockerroom because field was not at home school, including one D-III college. The D-III school I attended used a stadium that was actually owned by the city - it was used by the city's public high school and painted in their colors. There were also no locker rooms so we would prep in our field house and walk over in full pads...not a long walk but too long for half time, so we used the adjacent public pool's locker rooms for half time. They were too small to fit the whole team so only the two-deep roster would go in at half, which was rough if you were a a third stringer in November. I think the year after I graduated the school finally bought the stadium from the city and eventually put in field turf, painted it in the college's colors, and has recently built adjacent team rooms so no more need for the pool.

buildings, equipment, paintings, whatever do you know of some weird or strange stuff? I know a place in a very downtown urban environment, their field house/weight room/ locker rooms used to be an abortion clinic that's the weirdest one I know I just recalled that the other night and thought it would make for some interesting stories here The weirdest one I know is a small, rural school in SW VA (the Hurley HS Rebels) whose field is surrounded by “The Cliff” just a few feet from the home sideline (opposite the bleachers, which is where they put the visitors) and the back of the endzone. The Cliff has a big confederate flag painted near the top of it with a forest growing on the top. You can see it in their Maxpreps highlights here: www.maxpreps.com/high-schools/hurley-rebels-(hurley,va)/football/videos.htm?videoid=96c9c369-dd54-49ae-9c2a-2ceef30f0186 The strangest one I encountered as a player was a place that had their field bordered by a cow pasture. The strangest one I’ve personally coached at was a very small rural school with a “utility field” that was just clay dirt with some thistles and rocks. That school was a basketball school. They sold tickets, but people were too cheap to buy them so they’d just park in the street that ran up the side of the field and watch from cars or lawn chairs for free. The weightroom was literally a broom closet with a dumbbell rack and they had a bizarre looking homemade “sled” they’d leave behind the endzone on their field—the sled was made from old foam couch cushions duct taped to some wood. I also coached at a place with a really sketchy trailer park behind the visitor’s sideline. You could even see it on film.

To piggy back on the field conditions - Wellington MO once had their field set so if you kicked an extra point on one end it would go into a cornfield and you kicked the other way it would go down a steep hill. Wentworth military visitors stand consisted of a small, maybe four row bleachers that were about ten feet from the sidelines. Coached in a JV game that was a practice field and only had one set of goalposts and had a slanted field so you would literally be either running up or down field. We had a JV kicker that we wanted to let kick an extra point and I foolishly switched positions on the field for the kick - and lost our downfield advantage!

Our field is right next to a cemetery if that counts. My HS field was across road from a famous Pet Cemetery. (Checkers Nixon's dog buried there.)
