I realize I’m probably getting too old to stay in coaching. We won the schools first state championship this year. The football team is getting patches and rings. But amazingly to me, the band and cheerleaders are also getting state patches. I’m the only coach on the staff that thinks this is bizarre. I expect the cheerleading coach to help line the field and the band director to raise funds for Hudl assist to get us back to State. And “STAY OFF MY LAWN!!”

Our cheerleaders got pendants when we won. They were basically the top of the ring we got. Of course they had to pay for them just like we did.

Look at it as a good thing. Everyone gets to be involved with your success and it can only help the program IMO. I see your point but I doubt the kids will care one way or the other.

I agree, dont sweat it....most places I've heard of get pennants for the cheer team too. I've never heard of the band getting anything, but sure.....it can only help school spirit and morale.

I think it is a pretty cool thing to do! The more people who feel that they are part of the success, the more support the program will have.

We’re going to have to agree to disagree on this one. Until I see the tuba player practicing in 99 degrees in August or the cheer coach lining the football field in December - I don’t see how they deserve State Championship patches... Why should everyone get awards? ‘Merica...

Sure it's annoying but unless the money for the patches comes from the football budget find something else to worry about. In the meantime save it up. If the cheerleaders or band ever win a competition ask their director for your patch.

They will sew it on their jacket, wear it for their high school years, get to college or the real world and realize they will get destroyed for wearing a letter jacket after high school and never wear it again. You and your guys will have the rings that you will wear anytime you want and people will always ask or have something nice to say about it. We won a state title in 2000. School paid for basic ring. We could upgrade to real gold for like 200.00 back then. I went back and forth and finally did. Had it appraised a few years ago and it was almost a full oz of gold. Needles to say I know exactly where the ring is. No clue about any of the other stuff we got for winning it that year.....

I haven't seen a letter jacket in this area for years. I assumed people stopped wearing them. I never knew you could get patches on them for winning to state. That shows how much I paid attention to them.

This is just the perfect response to the OP, well done.
OP - there will always be hangers-on that want to act like they had a hand in it whether those are admin, players whatever. "Success has many fathers but failure is a bastard." Enjoy the ride!

I had a guy cater a party once (big BBQ type event), while there he was showing off his college football national title ring. He earned it by catering some of the team dinners for the team the year they won the title. This happens everywhere.
Them getting a patch doesnt cheapen or diminish what you have done. It may cheapen the value of the patch, but is that really important?

Congratulations!! It is what it is. Did they put in the same amount of work? Absolutely not, but does it make your school better, program better, and the community better? Yes. Like many have said, don't sweat it, many great coaches go through their whole career without a state title. Enjoy it!

Why not keep it a secret when you win a state championship? Does the whole darn school have to know about it? Tell them when you get back that you were at some conference, and burn the shipment of patches.

Why should everyone get awards? ‘Merica... They are usually practicing on the cement so as not to ruin the grass- but good bands are absolutely practicing in 99 degree heat in August Doesn’t mean they should get a patch , but I also wouldnt worry much about it.

The more people you have on your side, the easier it is to build your Program. If you make this an issue, you will likely receive less support in the future.
We were fortunate enough to win a couple titles recently. I am constantly thanking everybody who supported us in any way.
Whether you believe it or not, tell them: "We couldn't have done it without your support"

Savor the moment with your team.
As the late George Carlin pointed out:
"Dont sweat the petty things, and don't pet the sweaty things.

Put me on the "make everybody feel like a part of it" side of the discussion.
A few weeks ago, as our freshmen were getting ready for their last practice of the season, I walked over with two of our upperclassmen who were going to talk to the younger kids about what they'd to miss if they thought about sitting out their sophomore year of football.
The first thing out of the first kid's mouth was ... "Every time I hear the band playing, and get to run out through the cheerleaders ..."
Because of Covid, we played several games without them this year, so we know the difference.
Bottom line, we're grateful to have them. Probably should express that more than we do.

This is such a great point. To be honest, While I understand the OPs point of view, and I agree with hiim that I think it is bizarre (and If i were a band or cheer person I probably would be saying "Why do I get a patch? I don't want this" is it THAT tremendously different than hearing people refer to their favorite teams as "we" or buying championship gear when your alma mater (that you didn't play for) wins? A little different, yes, but not THAT different. Ultimately, the patch will say "football championship" right? So a band person, if ever asked about it, will say "the football team won the championship" correct?

I agree. Let everyone be apart of it. But I get his point.
With that said, our cheerleaders went to disneyworld and won the national championship a few yrs back. We were 1-9 that year. I did not request any patches for our boys lol. I didnt want to be apart of it.

Why should everyone get awards? ‘Merica... Football cheer and band should be a big family. Your entire athletic dept should be. Football players at volleyball games, girl's basketball players at baseball games, etc. I've seen bands practice in 100 degrees in the summer for HOURS. I've also had a band play so damn loud the other team couldn't communicate and our staff really felt like it helped to swing the game. We went down at the end of the game and celebrated with the band in the end zone. That win put us in the playoffs. I coached at one school where cheer would do a car wash and cut us half the check and we didn't do chit. They just felt like they should because we helped them with their mats all the time. Their parents also attended our games and bought food and drinks = more money for me. We bought new uniforms with their money. I got to pick the band's new song one year. That was cool. Seven Nation Army. Those band parents also bought a ticket, food and drinks and we bought new helmets with their $.

Until I see the tuba player practicing in 99 degrees in August I get a kick out of the band thing more than just about anybody, but the marching band might be the only entity on campus that works as hard or harder than the football team...
