www.iahsaa.org/covid-19/I'm opting out, and half my staff are already opting out. This is incredibly irresponsible. Comes on the heels of our governor declaring schools must meet in person more than half the time. No thanks.

This is fantastic news! I wish that all states would adopt this philosophy. Leave it to the individual to decide if they want to participate or not.

I'd like to add that we've had record numbers of cases multiple times each week for the past 3 weeks.
This move is purely political because a member of her party is up for re-election in the senate.
People are going to die. I want to coach more than anything else, it's one of the best parts of my life. But this is incredibly irresponsible.

I'm in Ontario, Canada. No official decision has been made yet, but it is HIGHLY unlikely that we will have any Fall sports.
Ontario's population is 15 million. Geographically, Ontario is significantly larger than Texas. Iowa's population is 3.2 million.
There have been less COVID-19 cases in Ontario than Iowa
The district (county) I'm in is about double the size of the state of Vermont and we have ZERO active COVID-19 cases. We haven't had a confirmed case for over a month....yet there's a 99% chance we will not have football in the Fall.

How do you feel about crowds-attendance at games? Masks-social distancing optional? Or no fans at all? If you want to attend a game, go to it. If you want to wear a mask, wear it. If you don't want to wear a mask, then don't.
If you want to sit next to the same people that you have for years at the game, then sit by them. If you want to find a spot to sit/stand by yourself, then do it.
If you have a health issue and do not feel comfortable going, then stay home.
By now people know the risks involved. Leave it to the individual to determine what they want to do.
My parents are both in their 70s and have been attending their grandchildren's baseball/softball games for a couple of weeks. My mother has health issues and wears a mask as they sit in the outfield by themselves. She understands the risks and has made the choice that she wants to watch her grandchildren.

The individual(s) who choose to attend and not wear a mask are the ones most likely to infect others at the game even if asymptomatic. It's this kind of rationalization that has led to huge spikes in positive tests-COVID cases and deaths across the country.

Cool, I assume your parents won't seek medical treatment if they get sick. After all, they knew the risks. Right?

Your mother knows that her wearing a mask is a small layer of protection, but if OTHERS wear masks, that is a big layer of protection right?

Cool, I assume your parents won't seek medical treatment if they get sick. After all, they knew the risks. Right? Why wouldn't they though? Based on many comments (here, reading comments on other news outlets etc) , I think I fall more in the middle of this whole situation than most. There is ALWAYS a risk that one might get sick from others correct? Would someone not seek treatment on that basis? That said, the idea of NOT wearing a mask because "you don't want to" and increasing the risk of others bothers me. Why couldn't I celebrate the Declaration of Independence a few weeks ago by firing weapons in the air 2 weeks ago? That isn't all that different than choosing to not wear a mask if you think about it.

Doing something you know is dangerous for yourself and others, then demanding others bail you out when it goes badly? That's pretty selfish.
"Rugged individualism" seems to be "I do what I want, you help me when it goes sideways". Maybe just be responsible in the first place.

"Rugged individualism" seems to be "I do what I want, you help me when it goes sideways". Maybe just be responsible in the first place. But isn't it "always" dangerous? Seniors are always more at risk should they be infected by any type of bacteria or virus. I understand your viewpoints, as well as those who disagree. My question to you, based on your statements is "when"? Because when you look at this from a macro level, it isn't going to be "safe". It may be more safe, but when? How will we determine that? Driving 140 is really dangerous. Driving 70 is safer, BUT still more dangerous than driving 45. How do we decide that the situation with this virus is driving 70 and not 140?

My rationalization is that if you are afraid of becoming infected then it is best for you to just stay home. As I said, I am really more in the middle, because to this type of reply, I would argue that simply isn't realistic, and those who decide they don't want to wear masks, they can congregate in larger groups etc then increase the risk for OTHERS. Again, why couldn't I celebrate the 4th with my six shooters blazin in the sky?

Again, why couldn't I celebrate the 4th with my six shooters blazin in the sky? Not to get too off topic, but where I live (small town USA) my neighbors do. I hate it because my dog goes bananas, but I certainly am not going to tell someone else what they can/ can not do.

How do we decide that the situation with this virus is driving 70 and not 140? Legitimately, maybe the best thing I have read on the coronavirus response ever.
