We are not going to change each others minds on this issue. My rationalization is that if you are afraid of becoming infected then it is best for you to just stay home. Why should I have to become a shut-in because people of your mindset choose to be irresponsible? And why should I become a shut in because you're very worried about the virus?

What would you like to see happen? What is responsible in your opinion?

I don't think blb was suggesting someone be a shut in, but rather at least practice some of the methods that will reduce the risk and speed of transmission. Wear a mask, not "wear if you want to". Keep spacing. Not "keep spaced if you want to". etc.

Doing something you know is dangerous for yourself and others, then demanding others bail you out when it goes badly? That's pretty selfish. "Rugged individualism" seems to be "I do what I want, you help me when it goes sideways". Maybe just be responsible in the first place. But isn't it "always" dangerous? Seniors are always more at risk should they be infected by any type of bacteria or virus. I understand your viewpoints, as well as those who disagree. My question to you, based on your statements is "when"? Because when you look at this from a macro level, it isn't going to be "safe". It may be more safe, but when? How will we determine that? Driving 140 is really dangerous. Driving 70 is safer, BUT still more dangerous than driving 45. How do we decide that the situation with this virus is driving 70 and not 140? How about when we stop having to convert refrigerated semi trailers into mobile morgues. Whatever, y'all want to be selfish because you can't be inconvenienced? Go for it. Just remember, history is going to judge you harshly.

planck,
What is your answer to the situation? What would let you feel comfortable to return to work?

Just remember, history is going to judge you harshly. It seems due to my question, you think I believe that a "Lord of the Flies", survival of the fittest, Ivan Drago "if they die they die" approach is appropriate. Far from it. But I also recognize valid counter arguments in some cases. Not the "It's "Merica, I will do what I want!" type arguments, but I could craft a valid argument that since it appears the virus doesn't seem to be a major fatality risk for younger people, taking away a very fleeting opportunity in their lives could also be deemed "inconsiderate". I can also see the validity in the arguments that a cessation of human interactions would cause more issues for the human race and civilization than the medical ones caused by the virus. For example, New Orleans has around 1,100 or so unique (not fast food, or national chain like Applebees) restaurants in its Metro Area. Estimates are that about 33% of those will not make it through this. Just one example of a non medical impact. It is a very complex situation.

Like it or not, we do not all react the same way to having a mask on. And the same is true for having the mask off.

I admit to being torn on a lot of these issues. But this is where social media, mistrust of media in general, politics on both sides is really hurting us. Think of all the collective sacrifices we were able to make during WWII for the good of the cause: rationing foods, war bonds, victory gardens etc. There was a common goal and a clear message and people generally were convinced to do what was best for everyone. Obviously not the same situation, but we've already lost more Americans than we did in WWI and sadly are in a situation where we can eclipse the deaths of WWII as well. I don't have the answers, just venting I guess.

Just a reminder that—to my knowledge—no one is here is an epidemiologist. I don’t think anyone has the qualifications to say what’s safe and not safe, what are normal or abnormal viral numbers per population density, nor the transmission rates amongst populations with or without masks.
With that said, would any of you listen to what a doctor, who’s never coached football a day in his or her life, says to do on 3rd and goal? Are you willing to listen to people who have no football acumen?
If you’re not open to getting football advice (a game, a sport) from a lay person, then please don’t give dissenting advice from many medical professionals.

I think that the driving analogy is a good one for this issue. The most dangerous thing that I and my family do every day is get in our vehicle and drive on the freeway, but it's a choice we are allowed to make. And it also puts complete stranger's health in my hands as a driver, that's a responsibility I take on when I decide to get behind the wheel.
The government gives me the freedom to drive my vehicle to get where I need to get, but they don't give me the freedom to drive as fast as I want or however I want, in the interest of public health. We have speed limits, traffic laws, etc. that I have to follow if I want to be able to drive legally. That's a government infringement on our "freedom" that we as a society have pretty much all deemed is acceptable and necessary.
This pandemic situation has a lot of parallels to me. If the government is going to allow me to go out, keep my business going, see my friends and family, etc. but wants me to wear a mask while doing so, that's similar to them telling me to drive the speed limit, or use a turn signal, etc. Not a huge infringement on my freedom and God-given rights as a red-blooded American.
Now, people who had their businesses shut down and essentially had their livelihood taken away during this, I completely understand why they may think this whole thing is a giant government overreach. And that certainly happened to some people, and I feel for them. But being asked to stay 6 feet apart and put a mask on when out in public is not the same thing as having your business shut down.

That isn't happening. Incorrect. According to Washington POST article today, "Nationwide deaths have begun to rise again. In some of the worst-hit states, especially across the South and the West, new death records are being set daily. As a virus-scarred summer wears on, public health specialists say the numbers are almost certain to continue to climb." www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/its-not-only-coronavirus-cases-that-are-rising-now-covid-deaths-are-too/ar-BB16SQDr?li=BBnb7Kz

The driving analogy neglects one thing.
You drive in a reasonable and prudent manner. But you also expect the other drivers to do the same, otherwise chaos results.
The correlation is that you should expect others to demonstrate "Civic Responsibility" to do what they can to prevent the spread of the virus.

No consensus.

? For Iowa Coaches:
has your summer contact with your teams been limited?
I heard yesterday that one of Iowa’s top football programs has only had their kids in twice this summer. Iowa City schools were going to go all remote.
If they true isn’t that a big jump to starting fall as usual?

Iowa has been one of the most aggressive for sports hasn’t it? What do the Covid numbers look like for sports this summer there?

Teamwork wins...right?

Sure, but right now the "head coach" has successfully implanted the thoughts that "everyone is lying to you", so some players don't believe the OC or DC or position coaches and will not follow their instruction. How would a team perform if the WR's are running a deep route every play regardless of it is run or pass, the RBs both run to mesh point to get the ball regardless of the play call, the OL are all pulling to trap so they can ear hole a guy regardless of play call, and QB is going to sprint out to show off his r/p skills regardless of play call?

Doing "their own thing" is more along the lines of following the procedures they have always done. And to make it more accurately fit the situation, The coordinators would be Belichick, and Andy Reid who are operating under the new HC who has never coached football.

Oh wait that isn’t possible. In this case the next head coach is hiding and keeping quiet. Which is probably best since his stint as oc was riddled with scandals. The largest which would have gotten the coach burned at the stake, stealing game plans, inserting asst. coaches who leaked plays, audibles, and even phony opp. Info.
