How bad will it hurt HUDL if there isn’t a fall football season?

I don't have access to HUDL's financial statements, nor do I know their corporate structure, but I can't imagine they have tremendous cash reserves. AMC theaters are expected to file for bankruptcy in the immediate future due to lack of revenue. Does HUDL have additional revenue streams?

Depends on when schools accounts are due I would guess. Ours pays on July 1st when the new school year officially starts. Who knows if any announcements will be made for the fall by then but I would guess it would depends on the billing cycles. Lots of schools have package deals for multiple sports so I would assume that would create revenue for them. Also would think after storage-gate and everyones reaction guys want their film year round and would pay for it regardless I guess...

What about schools/teams not being able to afford it or their normal package? Unless you’re setting a pretty good reserve or your school helps you all our budgets are going to be tight. We are losing months of our typical fund raising window and companies/people aren’t going to have the cash to put into our programs. I’m sure there were schools that had not sent out their reconditioning when things started to shut down. I’m not even sure currently in KY we can spend school funds.

Those are very good points about the economic conditions we may be living in in the fall. I will say this, I don't know if it would be that horrible to go watch a game where coaches and players aren't looking at giant TVs under tents on the sideline the whole time.

I became astounded my last couple years of coaching by how many coaches can't watch the action on the field as it happens and see what's going wrong.

We might have to go back to sending young coaches out to video games or make film exchanges in a Dunkin Donuts parking lot. We might even have to return to going to games and scouting with pencil and paper (a la Belichick"padding").

Mine usually stayed in my backpack. Until I wanted to check out scores of other games.

Just to avoid confusion, scouting a game live and the assignment considered "padding" given by Belichick to coaches are similar only in the sense that a paint by number page and the Sistine Chapel are both "art". It would be impossible to "pad" a game live.

I stand corrected. What I was referring to was scouting a game via a human recording everything on paper (as in Football Scouting Methods).

Absolutely, and his dad Steve did write the book you reference. Just saying that recently people have been talking about "padding" a game, which is an assignment Bill gives to coaches on his staff as part of their development amongst other things. That process is different than scouting a game.

Everyone is going to have to be pretty simple anyways due to no spring and likely no summer.

You can tell when guys start bitching about HUDL that they never drove an hour to pick up a DVD only to get back and find out it was blank....

Now lets talk about in person scouting and all that fun...

I used to in person scout and enjoyed it. I felt like I could get a better feel for things. I’m sure since it’s been awhile I’d have a harder time.

Ha not a film trade location but the interesting places reminded me of when I was a head coach. All of our high schools were in the same city so I would meet opposing coach at 6:30 to trade. Meet out AD at a little dive bar at 7:00 to discuss game because it’s the only place in town that served at 7:00. (I didn’t drink in that meeting) Then met staff at 8:00. Sometimes would meet back up with AD for lunch after meeting. (Would have a couple that go round) That was a good dude to work for. We’re still friends.

Back in the day when coaches actually went to games and scouted with pencil and paper, there was only one team who had lights and played Friday nights. All the coaches who were scouting sat in one corner of the stands. It was a combination clinic, social hour, therapy session, and scout. It was great. I learned a great deal of football and got to meet/know some great coaches.

I'll never forget the 20 minute conversation in a hotel parking lot (a middle of no where truck stop intersection motel parking lot) I had with a HC about a breakfast he had years ago with our AD and how much sausage our AD ate during that long ago breakfast meeting. I was just like, 'give me the film so I can leave and go home.....' and then all I could think about was getting a sausage biscuit on the ride home.......

Like 2 decades behind on that scheme there. Never thought of that back in the good old days of live scouting....

I still will scout a team in person if the schedule permits. There's just something about seeing a team live that I like. I like to get the snap count so we can use it in our prep for that team. I'll take some notes but what I really like to do is watch and see how players handle adversity during the game. Just my two cents.

That's why the Driver's Ed position was given to a football coach If I had a football player I liked that was doing his driving at the time, I'd have him drive me to the trade. Nice way to make $20/hr. Toward the end, until we got HUDL in 2013, I just wanted some time alone.
