Yesterday I was talking to one of our former players who became a very high profile QB for an ACC school. He still lives in that town. He doesn't coach for a living but a guy that he knew asked him to work out his son, an aspiring QB. After the workout the dad asked him if there was anything specific that he should work on. He told the dad, "You should work at finding him a different position". THIS!!!!! That is awesome. I really have thought about forming some type of evaluation service for coaches. Something where a parent or player could get a real evaluation from an outside source. A truthful one. Maybe call it the "Truth evaluations." I don't know. An honest to goodness I don't care about your feelings or money evaluations. Clubs, travel teams, guy you pay for lessons, recruiting services - all have a monetary or selfish reason to tell a kid he is better than he is. There are so many deluded parents about all kinds of sports and their kids. Maybe this is a way to take the pressure of the coach. This would actually work better for kids who drop football to "concentrate on" baseball or whatever. Most of those kids have no chance to play college baseball. Not really. Sure they can pay to go to a $50,000 a year d3 school on be on the college team. Do they even realize that they are being had? Anyways, I know that there are tons of pitfalls with "Truth Evaluations" or whatever, but would be nice.

By the end of the 2nd practice, we was a TE. We got this long email that night from his dad...family is all D1 athletes, uncle played D1, cousins all got scholarships, yada yada...crap like that. The kicker, tho, is part of the email discussed at length about how his son "watched hours of Peyton Manning & Big Ben on youtube, and has worked for months to copy their throwing motion." I think, or hope, we have that emailed saved somewhere. Anyway, the kid left for a private school after the season, talked up his QB prowess to us once he left, bragged about being the QB...then mysteriously quit the team before the season. I'm sure they wouldn't let him play QB either. It's funny, but also sad that parents put so much pressure on kids to reach a certain goal, so much that the kid would rather quit than be viewed as a disappointment i the eyes of his parents.

Dad comes into the coaching office complaining that his sophomore boy isn't a starting WR.
Dad: "He's one of the best weapons you guys have and you don't use him!_____ (the starting QB) and my boy are a great quarterback, receiver combination!!"
HC: "____ (WR coach), how much playing time has he been getting?"
WR coach: "We have a rotation, he gets about fifteen snaps a game."
Dad: "Yeah, ONLY fifteen snaps and you never throw the ball to him!"
HC: "Coachcb, could the kid get some turns at cornerback for you?"
Me: "Yup, I've approached him about it but he says he only wants to play offense."
Dad: "Of course he only wants to play offense! That's where he's been getting scholarship offers!"
HC: "Not a single school has contacted us about him getting a scholarship.."
Dad: "I've got PILES of scholarship letters at home! He went to the ____ College football camp last summer and they loved him!"
HC: (pulls out his cell phone): "Great, I'll give ____ (the HC over at ____ College) a quick call, I went to college with him, we'll sort this out. I'd like to know if we can send some film over."
Dad: "THIS IS HORSECHIT!!! I'M GOING TO SUE YOU IF MY BOY CAN'T GET A SCHOLARSHIP!!"
HC: (looking at his cell phone): "Let me make this phone call and we'll get 'er figured out."
Dad: "MY BOY IS DONE PLAYING HERE! I'M TAKING HIM TO ____ HIGH NEXT YEAR!"
HC (smirking at this point): "Now, just hold up a minute, I'm going to get a hold of Coach ____ and help your boy."
Dad: "F--- THIS!"
Dad storms out and had to listen while we laughed our a--es off as he hit the door.

Dad storms in with his own from-the-stands game film, walks us thru it, demands to know why his kid was benched after that performance. HC: "Sir, where are the rest of the plays?" dad: "what do you mean? Did you SEE that? My son needs to start!" HC: "We ran 54 plays in the game. Your film has 19. Where are the other plays?" Dad: "no idea what you're talking about..."

rosey65I have plenty of stories like that one. I had a dad threaten to sue me under the ADA because his son had made about 10% of the practices in three weeks and wasn't playing.. "There are days when his ADD is just too bad for him to come to practice!" Here's another gem: Dad: "Coachcb, I'd like to talk to you about my boy playing QB." Me: "As a policy, we don't discuss positions with parents." Dad: "You'd better make an exception in this case as you're discriminating against my son." Me: "How so?" Dad: "You have a Hispanic kid at quarterback and two black kids in the backfield. You're only white kids play on the line or at wide receiver." Me: "Those are our best athletes for the position and I am not discriminating against anyone. Your son has been playing plenty of snaps at wide receiver. He's also been getting turns at practice at quarterback." Dad: "Well, he's either not getting enough turns or you're not coaching him well because he's the best you have in that spot!" Me (p-ssed at this point): "Okay, I am going to lay this out for you. Your boy gets as many turns at quarterback as our first and second string guys. The other two have picked up on the system and terminology just fine. Your son has not: his footwork is always off, he doesn't know his right from his left, he can't execute a proper hand-off when he does figure things out, he fumbles the ball continually at practice and he throws a fit when we try to coach him. He is NOT the best QB we have. Dad: "YOU'VE GOT HIM AT WR AND YOU NEVER THROW THE BALL TO HIM! HE HATES THE GAME! WHITE KIDS ARE QBS AND MINORITY KIDS ARE WRS. THAT'S JUST HOW IT IS!" Me (walking away): "Why don't you go ahead and tell that to the parents of the minority kids or the commissioner of the league (who was black).."

My combination of coaching youth, middle school and high school ball over the years has produced some entertaining situations. Particularly at the youth and middle school level.. The coaches and parents at those levels can be real peaches.

At a former school our OC had retired but decided to do the chain gang for us. After a game we won quite handily he said their coach was getting on an official and after saying what he had to say, That HC from the other team (not our OC) looks at the Ref and says "I hope all your grandkids are born naked!!! and walks off.... I've always thought that was a good one

Two years ago we are playing a team and for some reason in their coverage the apex defender in trips runs with the #2 like hes in man but everyone else on the team is obviously in c3. So I said hey lets run #2 on a vertical in flood along with the #1. Guy on the out will be wide open. So we put it in and rep it all week. First drive we run it and score. Second drive, 2nd play, apex jumps the flat and we hit the vertical for an 80 yard TD. Right before the half, I call it again, and the HC screams into the headset ,"Coach dont call that play, it hasn't worked all night!"
I just gave the RB coach who was with me in the box, the Jim Halpern look from The Office.

I worked at a school that was predominantly white, I'm hispanic. Hispanic kid is the backup QB. Dad is a total PITA, constantly saying he's the better QB to anyone that will listen. The next season, backup kid becomes a senior and is tabbed as a starter. Loses his position to a Jr who is just better and the stats back it up. Jr begins to start games and dad screams from the bottom of the bleachers that his kid should be in. Next Monday at school, I get called into the principal's office and he shows me an email that was sent by this parent. The email states that Coach 3rdandlong only plays white kids at QB. The parent accused me of being discriminatory against "our own people" and that I was jealous that his son is a better QB than I was in high school (I never once played QB). Principal had a good laugh at that. I did tell the principal that I would not meet or speak with this parent without union representation because he was making some very bold claims. The dad kind of disappeared after that.

I've worked at schools that weren't and it could make things a little unpleasant. I got into it with an AD at the last school that I worked at over some sh-t she was pulling in track (long story) and I told her that I wanted union representation when we met. She was the union president at the time so that put a damper on her bullsh-t real quick.

The plan should be put in writing ahead of time.
I'm not sure whether our athletics are covered under union representation. But I always ask admin if they would sit in on meetings if I think they may get out of control- for my sake AND the parents' sake (to keep me in check). I know our admin really appreciate this as they have told me directly.
I posted about an issue earlier this season where a parent was getting out of control and accusatory. I asked admin to sit in on the meeting and they did. After reviewing the paper trail my principal told me "With all the BS you have put up with here I applaud your patience- this kid and parent would have already gotten their walking papers.." It was also the first time she had ever heard of a parent/coach meeting where the coach was asking the kid to come back to practice. Basically the parent had pulled the kid and started accusing us of being abusive etc. He never showed for the meeting (2nd time he no-showed) and then transferred his son. Jacka$$!

Playing in a sectional playoff game against Tyler Eifert his senior year. Game plan offensively is easy because we were a DW team. So we get started on the defensive gameplan..One of the head scratchers of my career...
HC: Ok..when they split Mr. Eifert out....what are we thinking about doing?
Assist: Put Junie on him....(emphatically)
HC: What? What do you mean?
Assist: Put Junie on him, he big fast..he made all them tackles on Kickoff last week...put Junie on him!!!
HC: Coach there arent many answers to the question but I assure you Junie is NOT one of them!
Assist: Im telling you Coach Junie ready for him!
For the record Junie was 6'4 older brother of our starting wingback who had exactly 11 games of football experience! lol

Getting ready for our 1st home playoff game in years a few years ago. We had an RB coach, was a bit out there. Two stories from that game... He asked to give the pre-game speech. He had driven the 3 hours to our opponent the week before so he could buy one of their team t-shirts. He wrapped the tshirt on a stick, planned to soak it in gas, and light it as the culmination of his speech. A few problems...he used a gas-oil mix, then left it in the field house for 30 minutes before speech time. Kids are gagging, all our eyes are burning, and then it wont burst into flames...the oil made it burn slowly, like diesel, and it gave off a think cloud of smoke, still into the FH. Also, the speech wasnt any good. Fast-forward to 2nd qtr..I had a white board for my OL, used the same one all year, it was kinda treasured by my OL, it was getting ragged by playoffs. I bought a new one for the playoffs, but wanted to make a scene while I could. Just before halftime, I'm just starting me pre-rehearsed speech that ends with me breaking the board, the HC walks up behind me, yells something, and puts his hand thru the board...the OL faces dropped, none more than mine (we still laugh about him unknowingly ruining my speech). We go in to halftime, I strut out of the office with the new board, the OL laugh, it lightens the mood in a close game. 3rd qtr...ineffective on offense, the aforementioned RB coach busts into my OL huddle on the sideline, screaming incoherently, then grabs the NEW whiteboard and Donkey Kong-smashes the thing into smithereens. I still remember my LT staring at it, shoulders drooping with each smash, quietly saying "but...thats our new board...why are you doing that??" That guy made it almost 1 more year...we sucked the next season, he rampaged in the HC's office at halftime on game 9, never stepped foot on campus again "But... Thats our new board..." hahahahahaha

I worked a summer after high school for a guy who played on a state championship team, back in the 70's, at the school I had attended in early 2000's. Had a legendary HC who didn't coach a ton of years, but whose winning percentage is still within the top 5 all time for guys who coached at least however many years. Can't remember the metric, exactly. His coaching years came at a school that won like 10-20 percent of games for a decade, he came and they won 80-90 percent for five years. Then he went to my school and STARTED THE PROGRAM. I'm talking no school one year, and a school shows up the next year. In the newspapers, this dude says that the plans for the program are to give the community something to be proud of and hopefully they'll be state champs within five years. 2nd full year of varsity football they go 12-1 -- state runner-up. 4th full year, Undefeated. Closest game was 20 points if I remember right. Won state by 30 (at a time when nobody won state by 30 and he played second string the last quarter and a half while accruing penalty yards that still might be the most ever accrued in a state championship game (most say it was because they wanted to keep the game "decent".) haha. Guy was flat out great at coaching.
Anyway, I was talking to my boss, and he said he was playing DE one practice when his coach put on full football gear so that he could run the scout team option QB because he knew how to run it and it was easier to run it himself than try to teach a guy on his team to do it and give the varsity a good look at what they'd be seeing on Friday. (since hearing this story, I've often daydreamed about putting on pads against my players, haha. But remember, this was many decades ago, when nobody really got too bent out of shape about such things). He dropped back for a rare pass to see how his guys would react when it was pass rather than run since the opposing team ran the ball almost every single play the preceding weeks. My boss said he broke through the line and just tagged the HC who was playing QB. Apparently, this HC went on a tirade with numerous curse words, talking about how if he wanted the team to win, he better not pull that CHIT of playing weak @$$ tag BullChit on Friday night. There were F-bombs I'm quite certain, and probably even worse personal name-calling situations in the tirade. The HC had made it clear that he was free game. A little later in the scrimmage, either my boss or someone else (can't remember the story) flat out floored the HC when he got the chance. At this point, from stories I hear, an even longer rant comes, but this time it is profanity that is all about how great it was that this guy was such a damn bas@$$ that he would plant the damn HC and how everyone should be so tough, etc. haha.
I had heard stories about this guy ripping facemasks around so that he was screaming in a guy's face while also screaming through the earhole of a helmet -- imagine how that happens. Funny enough, my Mom had heard these stories before I went to the school and she told me that if the same thing was still going on (in the early 2000's she said this hahahaha) and it happened to me, that I better make it a point to not do whatever it was that caused the coach to rip my head around in a circle. haha. She's from the South and at least a few times in my life made me go outside and pick my own switch, haha. She had heard a lot of stories. Nothing wrong with acting right, I guess.
I remember asking the guy (and a couple others who played for him) about guys hating him. They all told me that nobody really hated him. Sure, he cussed and screamed and ranted and raved, but he didn't ask anything of anyone that they weren't capable of accomplishing. They all said he didn't care so much about winning, but he just cared about everyone doing THEIR ABSOLUTE BEST!!! His theory was that if everyone, in every game, put out a performance that they were totally proud of, they would win every one of those games. Don't be mistaken, he didn't play no bullchit, but he was very good at being able to look at a play and know whether the player in question was going 100% and he just flat out demanded that 100%. All the guys I've talked to told me of scenarios where guys who maybe weren't that great at football, but put out a great effort at practice one day, were sent to the showers early before conditioning because they had already earned that day of practice.
This sort of "style" would never fly these days, but he impacted people in a way that can't be matched by most coaches. Sure, he could have cursed less, but that doesn't take away from what he imparted on kids. Anyway, it's just a story.

I have recent examples from a coach that I "worked with" that are so crazy that you would say I'm lying in an attempt to bring him down! They're all true, and if you want to hear the many variations, you can message me, but I saw this guy get hired as HC with less football knowledge than my 14 year old niece has!!!! That's a sad, sad fact, haha.

More than a few of them ....
We all know that 1 guy on every staff, that tries to show how "nuts" he is by wearing shorts and a T shirt or summer gear into the Winter
about 3 years ago , were playing some team out in the middle of the state in the semis,
I saw a dude put himself into what i can only assume was hypothermia, in an all day driving rain in like 40 degree weather steady wind , in late November
Halftime we tell the dude , man its too cold for shorts , he says "Playoffs baby" and walks to their locker room,
After the game i'm walking to my car , I see them literally helping the dude just to sit in the passenger seat of someones car, hes wrapped in towels and blankets they have the heat on full blast, etc... he looks at one of the assistants and says
"(HC's name) Should let me make the decisions"

I was a freshmen in college--played D3 football--and we were brutally bad. We went 0-10 that season and our closest loss was a 14 point loss in Week 8. Well, this was week 9 and we were on the road against a team we thought we legitimately had a chance to beat, especially after playing relatively well the week before. Not so much...we got blasted and were down 49-7 at the half. Our HC comes into the locker room and he begins real calm but then it escalated: "Look, guys, I'm not going to name names...but MIKE WATSON YOU QUIT ON THAT PLAY!!!!!!!" The rest of halftime was pretty much spent trying to keep Mike Watson from killing our HC...

When I was in college we still had freshman football. Before one game our coach told us about a game that he played in when he was in the Marines back in the '50's. Before the game against another base, the coach motivated them by saying, "If you guys lose this game every swingin' d-ck on the team is going to Korea".
They won.

I had a coaches WIFE from the other team (who I know and is a guidance counselor) come up to me after a game against a team we (I) haven't beaten in at least 7 tries (some were playoff) and tells me that our team s dirty..I just stood there w my mouth open and shook my head and walked away...we ended up playing them the next week in the playoffs and beat them even worse

In college during his pregame speech our coach tells us that if anybody makes a tackle inside of the twenty on a kickoff he'd give him a dollar. A WHOLE DOLLAR! What really made it funny was that this would have required an almost superhuman effort. Polish Joe, our kicker, on a good day with the wind was barely kicking it to the twenty. When I was playing my junior year, our OL coach was an absolute legend in the area, and being as such, he was old as dirt. Loved him to death. One day after practice, our scout offense did a good job against our starting defense. Coach gives me a five dollar bill and says "Take the scout OL out for milkshakes on me." We ended up sharing that one milkshake lmao.

Had an opposing coach in the booth come over to our side of the booth, scream "Eat it, bitch!" and give us the DX crotch chop once after his team scored on our defense.

More than a few of them .... We all know that 1 guy on every staff, that tries to show how "nuts" he is by wearing shorts and a T shirt or summer gear into the Winter about 3 years ago , were playing some team out in the middle of the state in the semis, I saw a dude put himself into what i can only assume was hypothermia, in an all day driving rain in like 40 degree weather steady wind , in late November Halftime we tell the dude , man its too cold for shorts , he says "Playoffs baby" and walks to their locker room, After the game i'm walking to my car , I see them literally helping the dude just to sit in the passenger seat of someones car, hes wrapped in towels and blankets they have the heat on full blast, etc... he looks at one of the assistants and says "(HC's name) Should let me make the decisions" Reminds me of a few years ago when I coached under a guy who was big on us all wearing "the uniform" on the sidelines, but since we had no money, "the uniform" was just a Nike dri-fit t-shirt in the school's primary color and khaki shorts. Well, our last game of the season was a road game on Halloween night, it was 30 degrees at kickoff, and we had 2 inches of snow on the ground at halftime with about 2" of ice cold water standing on our sideline. He somehow miraculously produced a jacket for himself to wear when we went into the locker room at halftime, but it was the only one we had. That was the game where the opponent's 8th graders scored on our varsity in the 2nd quarter. It was senior night and the stadium was empty as soon as they had those festivities. I have never reconsidered being a football coach more than I did right then, but at least we had a running clock.

The crazy part is that you all weren't that far from having a really good year there too.

We had some real talent that year and some great kids who'd really bought in and worked their tails off. At least most of those kids got to have some more success the next year.

That's hysterical I remember scouting years ago and seeing guys breaking up a fight in the booth, home team was getting beat pretty bad, I heard one guy from the home team walked over grabbed the opposing guys call sheet, ripped it up and threw it out the booth window or something.

Playing a long-time rival, who'd beat us for years prior to our current staff arriving. On our way to our 2nd win in a row, up big at halftime, we come out and start the 3rd qtr in double tight.
The rival HC/OC screams thru the open window of the press box, "i told you! I knew it! I SAID they'd come out with 2 TE's!" and carried on this way for at least 3 or 4 plays. Now, he never made any adjustments, or offered advice to his staff, or did anything to slow our 2 TE run game. He just gloated for most of the 3rd qtr about predicting our formation.
