With all these terms being thrown about by commentators during the bowl games (plus for my general knowledge) what is the difference between them?

good luck trying to figure that out....lol. if you do, share it with me...haha
to me:
spread = formation air raid = mesh type routes with some vertical concepts west coast = high % passes from traditional sets. timing is key.

spread to me means northwestern throw so you can run balanced offense
air raid means like texas tech, mumme
west coast=who knows, applied to everything and everyone

I agree spread means run & pass equal from Shotgun/1-back.
west coast = short passing game
Air Raid = Shotgun passing team.

air raid is a term that was created by Mumme when he was at Kentucky. He took some of the WCO plays (BYU) and ran them from multiple formations with multiple motions and shifts from the gun and spread formations.
The traditional WCO is like the 49ers, BYU, USC
IMO there are a number of definitions when defining spread offenses. You can look at Bowling green and Northwestern. They want to run the ball first.
Texas Tech want to throw the ball almost every down.
I would consider Hawaii a spead team that uses the run and shoot.

Navy is a spread option team, but Urban Meyer also calls his offense the spread option.

spread = formation air raid = state of mind west coast = ain't that where them hippies hang out?
it really pisses me off when people say we're a "spread team" when they have tho ol in 4 pt stances and 4 verts is their only passing game. thats why i say its a formation, because everyone is doing it now and very few truely understand it. sorry for the rant but i cant stand those people.

Rutgers and Nebraska both run west coast, and they use formation shifts all the time (followed at Nebraska by false starts ) I don't know a lot about the spread or air raid, but it seems like the west coast uses a lot of multi-tight end formations.

What about the difference between Tim Stowers, Georgia Southern, spread option, Navy's and the flexbone offense? Without really studying them, they look very similar.

you want hippies...go to Eugene Oregon, Home of the University of Oregon. The student govt. outlawed something about 3rd world sweatshops and companies that use them, so Mr. Phil KNight (of NIKE) took his 60 mill donation back... now if he would just take those hideous Oregon uniforms back.
