How do you guys handle this?
On one hand I like to see it Fridays when the whole school is wearing school colors.
On the other hand, I dislike it thinking about where the jersey is sometimes, and at the end of the season, there is always a couple who can't bring in all their stuff because mary jane rotten crotch still has their jersey and it is a couple more days until they can locate it.

Game jerseys are given out before games and handed in after. Girls (or anyone else) can purchase versions of football jerseys in the school store. Otherwise, game jerseys are for games.
Every year I have a kid ask if they can have both jerseys so as you said, Mary Jane Rotten Crotch, can wear something to the game other than a strapless bra. I always say the same thing, "you get one. Which color would you like?"
I'm VERY big on this. My team will look sharp, and respect their colors and their uniform.

I never liked the idea because a jersey is earned. Our players put in the time in practice to wear that jersey. Not enough things are seen as a privilege anymore. I like the idea of replicas.

The only time anyone other then a player wears a game jersey is the day of the homecoming game- each senior chooses a member of the faculty who has inspired or encouraged him in some way during his high school years and those teachers/staff member wear it that day and that night at the game. Other then that it's strictly players only period.

Wearing a jersey is a privledge, as is being a member of the team. No one wears the jerseys except for players and teachers on teacher appreciation day.
I believe in handing out game equipment Thurs. night and it get's turned in after the game (if you have the facilities/washer/dryer). We currently don't do that here, and kids are losing game jerseys and equipment left and right. New staff, so we're learning on the run...

It is a tradition at our school that girls wear the opposite jersey on game days.(players wear dress shirt & ties) Very common practice in our area. We really don't give a rats butt if player x lets his girl friend or classmate wear his jersey to school and the game.

What? Huh?
Players can't let their girls wear their jersey? Huh?
This is just another of the steps leading towards the wussification of our society...
I guess you guys won't be happy till the players, have their boyfriends wear their jersey...
Wow... girlfriends can't wear the jersey?

Ah, the joys of coaching middle school. We don't have a second jersey, so no problem here, lol.

I have done it both ways. I got really mad when a girl got in trouble with the law wearing one of my player’s jerseys a few years back. So I stop letting girls wear them. I change again this year and allowed it. I think it was the good decision, its builds more pride in the school. And of course Moms love to wear them.

We DO NOT allow girls to wear our jerseys! At homecoming, we let the senior player's dads wear the opposite color jersey.

I second the notion by tribe. Who cares. If a jersey is lost, the kid pays for it. I wonder what the odds are that bulldogoption and wingt74 both have a girl in their school named Mary Jane Rotten Crotch.

When I was in high school, we bought our own jersies (with names on back) so we had both in our possesion. Girls wore the opposite color. We always knew what color we were wearing. Didn't ever make the playoffs so never had to worry about that unfortunately.

Isn't this the only reason most linemen have girlfriends in high school? So they could wear our I mean their jersey!

that is a cool tradition......how do you get those jerseys back though?
I like the idea of selling cheap T-shirt replicas of the jerseys though (profit + zero liability)
PS - I, too, have never heard this tradition. We have hard enough time purchasing the freaking things, and double that with keeping tabs of the kids who have the jerseys out (and getting them back). We issue them out on Thursday practice, then collect them immediately after the game.
Our kids couldn't afford to buy the jerseys, unless we have already replaced them

I don't see why the girlfriend has to wear the jersey. She should be wearing her boyfriends letter jacket. People should be able to buy jerseys at the school store if they want to wear them.

potential negatives--- Incorporating all of the adolescent drama that accompanies H.S . social scenes into my football program.
I don't need Johnny Qb being reminded that Suzy RC is now dating Jimmy WR everytime he sees her wearing 87 instead of 18. I don't need Tommy Tackle, my mammoth 6'5 290 Div 1 signee who happens to be less than handsome being reminded that although he is one dominant dude on friday nights, nobody wears his jersey on friday during the day. The list is endless... but basically I just don't see any good from it.

The jersey thing must be a small school Minnesota thing. Most every team we play there are girls wearing football jerseys.
Small school area 40-70 kids per grade. We don't have a "school store" just the cheer leading adviser that sells school apparel.
The players are issued their home and away jerseys before the first game. They are responsible for returning them at the end of the year. If they don't, they pay for them and we get new jerseys with that money.

that is a cool tradition......how do you get those jerseys back though? The way it works with us is that our kids are issued two jerseys to keep track of thru the year. On game days the players wear their jersey for that evening and the females wear their BF's jersey (opposite color). Thus leaving the boy responsible for getting his jersey back from the friend/girlfriend. This is the part that makes me uneasy. I like the school/game day atmosphere. I don't like thinking about what happens to the jersey later on...............

Usually the junior-senior girls who don't have boy friends playing football will get a jersey from the freshmen through seniors who don't have girl friends. The girls like to wear them for team/school spirit rather than "look who my stud boy friend is."

tribe...not going to argue since you know your situation, BUT, I would say school size has NOTHING to do with drama....in fact, I went to a small school (graduating class of 61) and I would say having such a tradition would have been Magnified at our school more than it would have affected the larger schools I have coached at.

I don't like to see anyone other than fb players wearing the jersey as I think it should be something that is an honor. However, at my current school the girls were wearing the opposite jersey on Homecoming day. I allowed it last year, but this year I told the players that the only people allowed to wear the opposite jersey for Homecoming were their parents. This upset a few girls, but they will have forgotten about it by next year. (In fact, they forgot about it by the next week.) And the parents (especially the moms) thought it was the coolest thing ever.

adolescent drama is in everyone's program, no matter what. Maybe this is a small town thing, but where I come from support from the student body is not a given and definitely not taken for granted. Take that for what it's worth, but I believe having a student body that supports you is extremely valuable. What happens when a hormone crazy 8th grader sees the homecoming queen (or the lovely Ms. Rotten Crotch) shilling for the football team? Bet he's not playing soccer. And with the jerseys being returned, we trust these kids with a lot more responsibility in life than a jersey. If they lose it, they buy it. Who sells replica jerseys?

places I have been at it is for the parents to wear the opposite color. sort of an honor to being a football player parent.
I have seen teams lately with the girls wearing the opposite jersey. not sure how I feel about this.

I respect everyone's opinion, but I don't see wearing a jersey as an honor. So how would you feel if one of your fb players wanted to wear his girlfriend's volleyball jersey on the day of the volleyball game?

Sorry to butt in but I would pay good money to see our big boys try to paint one of those VB jerseys on. I would laugh my butt off! They would have to wear a manzziere or the "bro."

very common around here for girlfriends and moms or sisters to wear football jerseys. Most of our football players give their jerseys to their mom or girlfriend to wear at games.

It's very common in our area for the girls to be wearing the opposite jersey. I don't have a problem with it at all.
