the offense you would run?
What would be the offense you like to watch the most just as a fan?
Compared to what kind of offense you like to run as a coach?
Side question, when you watch NFL, do you really watch x and o's so much, or do you just turn that part of your brain off sometimes and just watch the game and the athletes invovled?

do you really watch x and o's so much, or do you just turn that part of your brain off sometimes and just watch the game and the athletes invovled? is that possible? I really enjoy watching Navy run the double wing. I don't especially enjoy coaching it, though. I really don't get off so much on watching Urban Meyer, but it is much funner coaching/teaching the spread concepts. Moreso with the PROS, IMO, it's all about the athletes. I have to watch a lot of Bear games where I'm at - so we don't get to see much of any offense.... When I can, I LOVE watching the Falcons run their lead zone with Warrick Dunn...it is a thing of beauty. regarding defense - I like to watch any that is aggressive and guys aren't loafing.

I like power football and i run power football. I watch dw tapes all the time and love it. I also have lots of old single wing footage that i really enjoy too...i cannot stand incomplete passes, sacks, turnovers...i cannot stand wasted shifting and motion and all that ...gimme old school Oklahoma sooner wishbone triple option or Colorado Stack I stuff....love it. Gimme wing-t, run and shoot is even ok too (june jones older stuff)..

I wouldn't call Navy double wing, more of a flexbone attack in my mind, but you are right, I love watching that stuff

We run midline/veer, like to watch AF & Navy. Shotgun option is also a thing of beauty to me. We don't see any wing-t in our area but when play-offs come around it is fun to watch all the misdirection plays.

All the high school and college stuff is fun to watch, especially if you can get down on the field! I enjoy watching the NFL a little more just because of the equality of the athletes thing! See what the coaches can come up with to win when most everything else is equal(except Peyton Manning of course). I kinda find myself watching the line play and defense in pro ball games more so than the backfield stuff! I used to enjoy John Madden cause he'd reply more good blocks or def. plays than just touchdown passes! Don't get me wrong, I think the high profile skill guys are OK but I want to see what the other 7 or 8 guys are doing to help their team win!

I only watch the NFL when my beloved (??) Lions are playing, although they can really destroy someone's love for a team, I still end up cheering for them just because it's always amazing the ways they are able to lose games.
The X's and O's of the NFL are just so watered down, with very little variety. Sure there are different team types, you have Pittsburgh who can smash the ball down peoples throats, and the Colts who seem to be able to throw at will to anyone and everyone. But when you get down to it, it's almost all the same. I watch the NFL because college football is not played on Sundays.
The offense I love to watch though go as follows:
Air Force and Navy flexbone triple option, it's a treat to watch teams with limited capabilities in the terms of recruiting compete at a Division 1 level, and this offense can be deadly, just look at what Georgia Southern does.
Spread-Run teams, teams like Utah of years past, West Virginia...I love watching teams that are going to spread you out to run the ball. The shotgun running theme is so prevalent now-a-days but only a few teams truly do it well. Mad props to Rich Rodriguez.
Air Raid offense, I have just recently become overwelmingly consumed by Texas Tech's offense, and reading up on the Air Raid as much as possible. I am by all means a run first guy, but to pick the brains of guys like Leach, Mumme, and Chow...is just interesting to see their approach to the passing game.
My all time favorite though.
Old school Nebraska football. Nothing gets better then lining up with 10 guys in the box on offense and shoving the football down the others teams throat, and then changing it up on destroying teams with the option. The option is an equalizer offense, but when you take some of the hogs that Nebraska used to get, and combine that with their talent pool the offense becomes the most dominating thing to watch. I truly miss that.

I would have to agree with everyone on the AF, Navy, Georgia Southern option attack. I am really getting bored with all of the Oneback/Shotgun zone teams in the college ranks. I know I may be stepping on a lot of Texas toes, but that's just me. It seems that at least half of the clinic speakers I go and listen to are talking spread zone also.
Anyway, the perfect game for me would be one team running the Navy Option vs a I formation power team.

Air Force/Navy with the double slot is really a thing beauty to watch. The perfect timing and execution of the option and the "now you see it now you don't" magicianship of the QBs in that style of play is awesome. Aside from that I love to watch old school Nabraska run the option and power football. I like watching the ball in the air too and some of the passing teams like Tx Tech but if two games are on, and one is an option team...I'll be watching them.

When tech played navy a couple of years ago, that was football heaven for me. Two totally different styles of offense. Not the cookie cutter NFL.
Even worse is NFL europe.

NFL Europe is the absolute worst football i have seen at any and all levels...and i watch everything.
yknow, if you want to watch entertainment sometime, go watch a well coached full house T team...those kids in Michigan hide the ball so well...its fun stuff.

Grand Valley State? I think is the name, a DII school up there in Meatchicken, they were fun to watch. Looked like gun, but not traditional zone read stuff. Interesting to watch. The little I saw before the wife made me go do something looked like qb stretch poba rules with the back blocking force. Stuff like that.

Oh man don't talk about NFL Europe. At one point in 2004 it looked like it was a rule that all teams had to have the same offense.
Hawaii vs Rice from a couple years ago was a good matchup of differing styles.
I like watching Boise State. And Louisville were good last year, don't think they were as varied this season.
I enjoy watching spread, air raid etc. But what I like is watching teams who do a great job of using multiple formations, motions, shifts etc then use the same small group of plays. Watching college football I think it is easier to see this as you get better camera angles and seems to be simpler reads rather than NFL tv view etc.

I enjoy watching college the best -- the lower the division the better. The AA and 2 playoffs were great again this year. I still enjoy the Meyers spread stuff. I'd like to run it someday, but I'm not sold on running it year in and year out. A couple of the teams in our conference run it every year -- depending on their talent it looks good or HORRIBLE. Especially with the weather we have in Mass. it's tough to rely on it up here. I aslo like to see a well run wing-t team, although only a couple of teams in our state still run it. The pro zone blocking running game is the worst to watch.

I enjoy watching college games over the NFL simply because i don't have to see all the individual celebrations.
I like to watch Air Force or Navy the best. However, watching Reggie Bush run wild on teams was amazing.

I like to watch both College and the NFL for different reasons. In College I like the pagentry, the students, the fact that these kids are playing just to play. I do like to see the diffrent kinds of Offense, I enjoy watching what we run here at ASU, I like watching June Jones at Hawaii and Air Force was fun to watch a few years ago. The college game still resembles somewhat the High School game where the NFL is just a waay waay different level. In college the game is much faster than HS, but the jump from College to the NFL is HUGE. I'm probably in the minority here but I tend to watch the X's and O's in the NFL a little more. IMO the NFL is the ultimate X's and O's chess match. Coaches pretty much run the same thing, because Defenses are to fast and to good to run anything to out of the ordinary. NFL Coaches have found what works best for them, tailoring it somewhat to their personnel and they run it. The talent level is so good and so similar on every team, that the biggest difference in the game alot of the times is all that preperation to get a real good game plan, those adjustments on the fly, and just a few calls in the 4th quarter that are executed correclty. I really enjoy watching the NFL because how close each and every game is.

CoachCalande, I'll agree with you about the double tight full house teams in Michigan, I played and coach up here, and it's a sure thing that every year in the finals between the 8 divisions you will see at least one full house team that just rolls people with their offense. Between all the misdirection, and lineman firing off the ball it is a treat to watch. Of course it isn't balanced in the sense of run v. pass, but they are balanced in a sense that once they lull the defense to sleep by running, trap, off tackle, and counter...they'll sneak up on you and pop one right over your head for a score. Always fun to watch those teams.

I enjoy watching texas tech, hawaii, BYU then and now, ND. I will watch anything passing.
I will watch a little navy football.
in the nfl I watch only the COLTS. if the colts are on, i will sit down andwatch.
If I had the time, I would run the colts offense. you just do not have the time in h.s. to be a great zone run team andthen be a dropback team as well.
i like arena football as well. it is fast paced and scoring is high. I think regular football should adopt some of the arena football rules, particularly, the motioning rule. you just cannot get much out of it for normal football. it also takes place in the winter and where I am from, some sundays you need to be inside during the winter.

We don't see any wing-t in our area but when play-offs come around it is fun to watch all the misdirection plays. Hard to find anything prettier then a well-executed Wing-T, especially when the QB is so good that you don't know who has the ball.

Joilet Catholic runs a nice Wing-T, but the BEST Wing-T in Illinois HS football is run by the Blueboys down in Carthage.

I am not a fan of offenses that pass more than they run. I really enjoy watching option football (i.e., Air Force). My favorite offense to watch all time was Tom Osborne's Nebraska I teams. Power Game plus Option. Love it.

I'm with you Aznando, IMO what makes the high school(especially) and college games so wide open and exciting are the numerous athletic mismatches available throughout the field! Not saying this is a bad thing, just the way it is! The chess game at the lower levels is where/how to attack these lesser players, either mentally or physically! I think at the NFL level, you may have a rookie or hurt player that can be attacked but mostly it's scheme vs. scheme, formation vs. alignment, without that extra bonus of athletic advantage! Might explain why a lot of successful college coaches and players that make the jump up, kinda flop sometimes! It's sort of like coming around full circle, back to the basic fundamentals. Who can block, tackle, run the ball and throw and catch a pass with all things equal! It then takes more individual dedication, will and perseverence to compete!

I always thought NFL Europe was more or less a summer scrimmage league for the 3rd string/practice squad guys on a real NFL team? And like most All star type games, had rules about the type of offenses used and can only run certain defenses/blitz's stuff like that?

Re. NFL Europe. There was nothing in the rules about it, but there's been a real undercurrent of 'interference' from the NFL. I think they want to evaluate people in the simplest way, so they insist schemes are similar. That way some players don't look good because of a system (as you could say happens in college - Tedford Qbs for example). I watched the Scottish Claymores train a few times, then watched the Rhein Fire one year when they were visiting. They were just about identical.

Yeah, right IKE. I thought it was like a long pre-pre season kinda thing to scout future prospects with an equal advantage for all players/teams, then the cream rises to the top! You also have a chance to get a look at the good Euro-players, who would be otherwise unknown over here!

I would like to see running the ball being illegal unless it is 2 or less yards. more then two yds, you have to throw.
what a great game that would be.
