I would like to see running the ball being illegal unless it is 2 or less yards. more then two yds, you have to throw. what a great game that would be. airman - We have coaches in NW Illinois who, if it was up to them, would make the forward pass illegal, and allow the offense to only run two plays: Wishbone Double Lead Right and Wishbone Double Lead Left!

Airman, that use to be one of our sandlot rules, believe it or not! You couldn't make a first down running but had to have 2 complete passes across the los in 4 downs. So most teams only ran on 2nd or 3rd down, after they had a completion under their belt or close to the endzone. It was literally pass first offense at it's best!

I would like to see some other changes to the game as well. 1. eliminate punting 4 downs to get 10 yds.
2. put the ball in the middle of the field at all times.
3. add 10 yds to the endzone so you can run vertical routes into the endzone.
4. have area football rules when it comes to being in motion. 1 rec could be going forward in motion when the ball is snapped.

You sound just like our OC...He gets angry when the summer is over because he can't play 7 on 7 anymore! ;D He also doesn't like linemen because he can't understand why you would want to put 5 players on the field who can't catch the ball.

i do not want to play 7 on 7. I just think you should make coaches have to think. if you do away with punting, that changes a lot of things.
no longer can you make excuses and punt the ball. every down has meaning to it. I have seen it tons of times, it is 3rd and 6 and the coach knows he can punt the ball, so he runs a dive play. he hopes the can pickup the yardage. if they do not, punting is his fail safe.
i like lineman. especially ones who can move.. they make the jailbreak screen work better.
if they are big and slow, make them a 2 gapper on defensse.

I would like to see running the ball being illegal unless it is 2 or less yards. more then two yds, you have to throw. what a great game that would be. But then you'd face 11 in coverage, as it would take the offense five downs to run for a first down. Or you could just take the 4 yards on the first two downs and practice 3rd & 6 for months over the summer... The people involved in NFL Europe really tried to get it going, get some enthusiasm behind it. But it was hard to support a team which had no identity, took the players it was given and clearly had restrictions on it's creativity. They even added a rule in the third year of it's reincarnation that basically stops players returning unless an NFL team sends them - Scotland had a RB called Siran Stacy, fan favourite and rushing record holder. He couldn't get on an NFL practice squad, and then when the rule was introduced he couldn't come back to play in Europe. It doesn't do a good job of giving a platform for evaluation. People talk about those who have come from NFLE, especially the Qbs, but Kurt Warner, Jon Kitna and Brad Johnson weren't very good over here. Yet Gino Torretta, Jonathan Quinn and Rohan Davey were great.

What about at least five different players must touch the ball on a drive before a touchdown can be scored? That would make people think a bit more.

What would be the offense you like to watch the most just as a fan? Compared to what kind of offense you like to run as a coach? tog: To my mind, eliminating the distance between these two answers is one of the secrets to enjoying coaching. Like many others, I like watching flexbone (Navy, Air Force, and until recently, Georgia Southern) -- but I like watching flexbone combined with Run and Shoot passing even more. And my favorite offense of all time to watch was the Triple Shoot at Emporia State back in the mid-90's, combining Fly Sweep with R&S passing. So what do I run? Fly with R&S and some Bunch thrown in for good measure, along with the Navy/Wofford Rocket Sweep series...

NFL Europe used to be named the World League of American Football and it doesn't seem like they had a required offense then because Mouse Davis and the NY/NJ Knights ran the Run and Shoot for 2 years. In terms of offenses that I like, I like misdirection offenses like the Single Wing and the Fly offense. The first offense I liked though was the Run and Shoot, found out about the Single Wing offense a little later, liked both since. The Flexbone is nice also, I watched Navy twice this past season (Notre Dame and then a quarter or two of their bowl game) and a little bit of Georgia Southern in the playoffs. I saw a game when Manny Matsakis was HC at Texas State University, where they ran for over 200 yards in the 1st half using the Fly Sweep Series. A good offense to me would be R&S/Wild Bunch passing with Jim Ahern Spread Single Wing/Shotgun Option running. I'm going to run a combination of Jim Ahern Spread Single Wing and a simplied for youth version of the Run and Shoot. Ted.... What teams run a Flexbone/Run and Shoot combination? Thanks in advance. Here are some NY/NJ links. www.geocities.com/Colosseum/1871/teams.htmlwww.geocities.com/Colosseum/1871/knights.htmlwww.geocities.com/Colosseum/1871/stats.html

Old time Nebraska has to be my favorite to watch and run. Back when I was the OC that is what we did. Man I love that style of football. Nothing like sticking it down their throat and making them like it.
We run the spread and it has been good to us, and the fans and kids love it. But it just isn't the same as lining up and just kicking someones arse.

The only thing more boring is texas tech.... that is my opinion of the double wing. it is boring as heck. i tend to doze off during those games. they wake me up when the offense is back on the field.

I think the reason that all the NFL Europe offenses are similar is because those Head Coaches and OCs want to go to the NFL. And thats what they are PROVING they can coach and execute the Pro Style offense. NFL Europe is not only the developmental league for players, its also for coaches, too.

Ted.... What teams run a Flexbone/Run and Shoot combination? Thanks in advance. G-dog: The only college program I am aware of that ran the flexbone R&S was Southwest Missouri State in the 90's. Al Black has run some at the high school level, but not recently, I believe.

Spread Option and Passing would be my first choice to watch and coach, but I've got a dark side also, I like good old fashioned smash mouth also, old Nebraska and Oklahoma Power/Option football was great to watch. But I like watching all kinds of football as long as its well executed. I hate sloppy football, especially players who don't wrap when tackling-BIG PET PEEVE.

Oh, most definitely three back option schemes that are well executed. Navy, AFA, Wofford and until recently GaSo. Nebraska with Tommy Frazier or yeah, who was their last real option QB? He could make a great go of mid-line. I wish I would have been more open to option during the 70's. Those great split back veer and bone teams. Alas, as a preteen I was into the Paul Brown Bengals offense that became the Bill Walsh WCO. Reallly should be the Lake Erie/Ohio River Offense. GregB

I like it all. I love the variety you get in high school and college. I really like it when teams that may not have as much talent can compete (like Navy and Air Force) because of their type of athlete and their system.
As for the pros, they pretty much all share the same playbook. But, I still will watch it for the athletes.

I like to watch alot of the Option from Navy and Air Force, but watching Bowling Green's spread the ball around style is a lot of fun too.
While I think Airman is a bit extreme, I hate punting too, hell I would rather go for it (And DO more than I should) on fourth down. At the very least I think the XFL had two things right, bringing the forward motion into 11 man ball, and making punts live after ten yards. Granted they couldnt market their way out of a paper bag, but it was fun football towards the end of the season.

I think you could put georgetown college kentucky in the R&S flexbone cateragory ......My favorite offense to watch today is the University of Houston they seem to run everything from motioning the qb and snapping it to him to the veer stuff to double tight I formation power game.....I also liked watching the Georgetown teams from the late 90's and early 2000's those teams were funny to watch

I really enjoy ANYTHING EXECUTED WELL.
That being said, I really enjoy both offenses & defenses that are constantly moving or shifting, because of the burden it puts on their opponent.
