If you could pick any 5 coaches to spend a week of practice and 1 game who would they be? My Picks #1 Coach Lombardi- to me he is "Success" nuff said! (I still get chills when I watch his NFL Films special...I show that to my players ever years !) #2 Coach Knight- I alway thought he was just that crazy guy throwing chairs and choking players until I caught him on a 1 hr interview special on PBS. The guy is teacher and master motivator. I was blown away about "Concentration..Recognition..Execution" #3 Coach K- Has always been my motivation as a young coach. Another coach that has not only achieved success but can sustain it. #4 Coach John Thompson- Extremly knowledgeable about his craft. Has done some much for young players all over world. You can see a direct reflection in his son as a coach(The man has a"lifetime" broadcasting contract!!!!) He runs D.C. #5 Coach Pete Carroll- Another master motivator. When he coaches you can tell he is "emotionally involved". You can see he loves his players and he loves coaching. He does care who is watching him or what he looks like..he is having fun!
All of these coaches have influenced me in some way with out ever meeting them. Attention to detail, organization, leadership, motivation, success on and off the field! Share your picks!

1. Bobby Knight--great coach and teacher. His players don't get in trouble and they graduate..that says alot about him. He does it his way. 2. Mike Kryzewski--Like me a Polack. Cares about his players, obviously a great coach and motivator. Interesting that he coached under Knight for a while. 3. Vince Lombardi--legend 4. Bear Bryant--legend 5.Pete Brown--Track coach Le-Win (IL) high school. Okay it is an odd one. No I did not run or throw for him but for 4 years competing against his teams I saw a coach who was so energetic and so motivational. He was also such a good sportsman congratulating runners from other schools when they beat his kids. I would just like to know what makes this guy tick and some "tricks" for motivating athletes at the high school level.
But there are just so many out there...not even football coaches I would like to shake hands with and have a hour conversation with at TGI Friday's.

1. John Wooden--great with all the peripheral areas of coaching. When asked what is the best way to motivate athletes he answered, "the bench."
2. Lou Holtz--just got things done. As he said, "I'm a skinny, nearsighted, guy who barely graduated from high school, I have a lisp, and I'm the head coach at Notre Dame."
3. Jerry Sandusky--former DC at Penn State
4. John Skledany--DC at Iowa State
5. Sonny Lubick--great teacher, hilarious guy, a good friend.

All are dead
Vince Lombardi- who better to learn motivation from Bear Bryant- who better to learn how to make players tough Woody Hayes- who better to learn run blocking from (mentored Bugel and Alex Gibbs) Sid Gillman- who better to learn the passing game from Gen. Neyland -maybe best defensive coach ever Bud Wilkson- who won more in a row?

TOG - That's interesting to see Gordon Wood's name on your list. I have a good friend and former colleague from the little town of Blanket, TX, near Brownwood, and he had a lot of Gordon Wood stories.

I don't even know what he ran scheme wise, but it would be cool to talk about just running a program with him.
