1) Bill Walsh - Master Game planner, great organizer. Assignment Oriented Coach. 2) Barry Alvaraez - Takes players with less talent and turns them into Heismans and Dominates Lines of Scrimmage. 3) Jeff Tedford - Great Motivator, sound football philosophy, and great teacher. Plus My moniker is Goldenbear76 ..what did you think..i was gonna leave Cal's greatest coach off the list? 4)Gotta stick a defensive guy in here. Pete Carroll. Although has great talent at USC, they play up to their potential. Ability to motivate and game plan defensively. 5) Lou Holtz - As a coach he was OK...as a bullsheeter..nobody comes close. "NAVY..WOW Those guys are tough. We'll be lucky to score 14 on em. I just hope our guys don't get intimidated.". I want to learn that skill!!!

Knighter,
Most of those Iowa guys you have on your list are pretty accessable. Either through clinics or heck just give them a call and they will be more then happy to help you out...if the time of year is right for them.

I have talked at length with all of them....but never can get enough of them. That was more a post for other guys looking....I actually coached with Coach Thomas at AP. Ken Winkler's son is my DC. I work Iowa and ISu camps, so anybody on those staffs are easily accessible too.

Only 5...damn thats tough....
Brian Billick----the most organized man I have ever seen....just watch him on the NFL Network the year after the Ravens won the Superbowl in training camp....that man has eveything down to the second.
Paul Johnson---What he does at Navy...just amazing.
Marvin Lewis----1 word, and its not Defense....Bengals....that guy can coach.
Paul "Bear" Bryant----I'd love to have seen him in action, in his young days.
Bobby Knight---I love the no shortcut, we do it right and if you don't I'll kill you attitude.

(I'll limit this only to coaches who are still alive)
Belichick- Would love to understand his personnel evaluation philosophy and would love to break film down and analyze opponents with him.
Carroll- I think it would be fun to have him around at practice, and he's a great defensive mind
Gruden- I read his book, and I just like the way the guy thinks.
Paterno- The guy's coached football for longer than some of us have been alive. Nuff said.
Walsh- The architect of so much...

1. Bear Bryant 2. Paul Brown 3. Paul Johnson (Love the Option) 4. Bob Ladoceur (150+ Amazing) 5. Bobby Knight ( I know only the public side of him but there has to be another side for a man so successful and getting everything out of his players)

Being a young kid I just noticed all my coaches are pretty old school
Joe Paterno-To much knowledge not to speak with him, hes prolly forgotten more than most coaches will ever know.
Lou Holtz--Ill be meeting him in about 2 weeks from now and my list of questions is already about 3 pages long.
Emory Bellard--WISHBONE BABY. gotta love inventors.
Roger Barta--Mastered the Wishbone
Bear Bryant--Expect excellence and get it
Ron DuPree--His knowledge is lost as far as books and concepts..I would love to get even an hour with him about his Stack I concepts
Eddie Robinson--Doing it when black coaches weren't supposed to be it and doing it GOOD!

I actually played for Barta at Smith Center, where I still live to this day. Right now, SC is on a 28 game winning streak, we've beat the previous record holders (Pittsburg Colgan) twice in a row for the KS 2A state title. A medical issue caused me to retire from playing football, but I can still do some stuff around. Took Algebra 2, Trig, and Calc with him, my sister also took his classes. He's not a good math teacher.
CoachAc, have you played Coach Barta?

I'm a little surprised no one has mentioned one of the most successful (in terms of winning pct. and national championships) college coaches of all-time, plus he was funny: John McKay.
Also Ara Parseghian. The guy won at Northwestern and resurrected Notre Dame. He was a creative offensive coach with great passion and class.
I'll go see Lombardi, Bear, Bill Yeoman, Woody Hayes, and Holtz, because (besides my own high school and college coaches) they've had the most influence on me.

If I could only pick 5! hum....... Don Markham, records and history speak for itself Woody Hayes, Ferocious about his line and mentored some of today's best John Wooden, probably the best "coach" the world has known John Gaglardi, again records and history speak for itself John DaGrossa, IMO the best line coach to ever exists. Other than that, Alonzo Stagg lombardi Pat Summit, Bill Snyder Tom Landry, Gordon Wood Chuck Knoll Bobby Knight Lou Holtz Jon Gruden Jock Sutherland And a whole lot more!!!!!!

most of these coaches writing on this message board didn't include Tom Landry. I'm to young to have seen much of Landry in action but i have read his books and he has inspired me to be a better coach, person, and christian. My list would be 1. Lombardi 2. Landry 3. Wooden 4. Knight 5. Red Auerbach
