Do any of you face a long commute to work? How far is too far? How would you feel about an hour and 15 one way?

That seems like a long way considering the long hours that we keep.

have done 30 minutes regularly for the last 5 years. did an hour and a half for a semester once when i was getting married and finishing out at my old school/while working with the kids at my new school and staying at my fiancee's (now wife) apt that was not fun at all just wears you out
that is about as far as I want to go
I could swing an hour or so for a semester if I had to, maybe a full year, but would do something about it to not. It just wears you out too much. I have been on staff with guys that commuted more than an hour for years. I don't know how they do it.

I'm currently doing 30 min. I'm looking to cut it down to under 10 minutes.

1. Not a teacher... but wanted to be a HC... took some Gawd awful jobs, a million miles away, just to get my shot... 2. First job was 1 hr 15 min. away... 75 miles... one way... got the gig after 2 years of youth football success... really just wanted the interview experience, messed around and got the gig... quickly realized I didn't know crap about football... ruined some kids senior year, vowed to never be that guy again. 3. After being an assistant under some respectable coaches, I was ready to be the guy again... 1 hr 30 min away... 90 miles... entirely too far away... only could sustain that for a year... the season, winter weightlifting, summer camp... I about died, and my wife almost left me. 4. Got an assistants gig to a school 5 minutes from my house... was heaven... but I wasn't the HC... 5. Previous gig... closest I've ever been to home... 45 minutes to one school... 65 to the other... it was a coop... Did 2 years there. Gas crisis hit... I was paying more to coach, then I was receiving in pay... and though I wasn't doing it for money... with the econonmy going to shirt... I had to let it go... 6. So now I'm home... looking to assist again... To answer the question... anything over 45 minutes is too far... you forget something, and you just can't go back... Becomes an all day affair... and the off-season, becomes killer, when its an hour pllus.

For me, fifty minutes was too far. It wasn't the only factor, but I actually resigned at semester partly because of the drive. I thought it wouldn't bother me and I was WAY wrong!!

My first coaching job, I drove 90 miles one way every day. I knew it would only be for one year. Next job 30 miles one way. Next job 15 miles one way. If I keep this up, I will be coaching across the street.

I have a 45 minute commute, all back roads. Better than my previous job which was close to an hour depending on rush hour traffic.

Initially my first job as an assistant was over an hour one way... That lasted a year...
My first head job (I Live in Northern VA - OUtside of DC) and I would drive to school in around 20 -25 minutes... But the problem was 95 south in the evening (this commute could last 40 minutes to an hour...Especially Fridays and Thursdays)..
When my son was born two years ago I decided to apply for a job 3 miles from my house... Door to door 10 minutes (two streetlights no major roads).... It is nice to know I can leave the weight room or practice field and be home very quickly and not worry about traffic.
I personally would not trade it for the world... I love it.

most recent job...im single, full time student, work part time, and my commute was 20-25 minutes, that is about as far as id be willing to go. but you gotta do what you gotta do sometimes

I commuted about 30 minutes and hated it. The mornings aren't too bad. Its the nights that SUCK. When I live in town, I'm home and in my sweats by the time you're just 10 minutes into your commute. I hate commuting. So much a$$ time.
I could never do 75 minutes. Too much time away from family.

My current drive is 30-35 minutes. Half highway, half interstate. Not too bad, but I'm pretty sure that 45-50 is my limit...and that better be a great teaching and coaching situation.
Hour and fifteen? Not a chance in my book. I think of it this way: I waste an hour each day driving. You would be wasting two and a half hours every day. That would get tough at some point.

How many miles is that per week, airraider? Besides the time wasted driving, you'll be wearing out your vehicle quicker....then the always volatile oil prices.....gas here now is $1.70 per gal......but had been as high as $4.70......thats a bunch of extra coin there to fork out, if it hits the high mark for several months.....I only drive 70 miles round trip, 4-6 days per week (depending on my work schedule) in a little truck that gets close to 30mpg and that high price of gas put a hurtin on me for awhile......something to think about?

I drive exactly an hour, 52 miles each way. The mornings are okay (Mike and Mike on ESPN radio get me through) but the evenings are tough. I'll definitely be looking for a job closer to home next year.
Thank god gas prices went down this fall, because august was killing me!

My dream is obviously to be at a school where I teach and coach, drive maybe 5 minutes round trip (or even walk!), my kids go to that school, etc.

It takes me about 40 minutes. My fellow coaches hate my drive because when I get to school/meetings I have all these football thoughts. "What do you think about this or that." They comment, "Driving and thinking aren't you?"

My last job was 45 minutes of interstate. When I took my current job, I bought a house that cut my commute down to about 3 minutes. I actually really miss the drive. It was one of the few times of the day I knew that I would be able to be alone with my thoughts.
Monday I interviewed for a different job. If I get it I would have about a 40 minute drive and that is something I consider a plus.

Do any of you face a long commute to work? How far is too far? How would you feel about an hour and 15 one way? Here are my concerns with your situation regarding a commute. ---since you have always been pretty public with your career. You are in your first off season following unsuccessful campaign with you at the helm. You went into the job with an abundance of optimism, excited to "have the athletes" to run your system. Less than 12 months later, you are not having a good experience, you have complained publicly about the relationship with you and the administrators and are looking to leave. Every new gig is a "crapshoot" with regards to how the things you are unsatisfied with will go. Going into that crapshoot though, you already know you will be burdened by a 3 school period commute and a hefty gas bill. I worry your experiences might mirror Khalfie's, and as a professional educator/coach, those type of coaching experiences are really crappy for the kids. (NOTE..NOT KNOCKING KHALFIE AT ALL..as I am sure he would agree that with 20/20 hindsight, taking jobs and leaving after a year or 2 is not desirable for the kids. I had 4 high school hc's in 4 years...). You gotta do what you gotta do...I just worry that you are going to be going into the new job with two grudges already. Just something to think about.

First job was a 2-hour commute, 1-way. It was August, about 3 weeks before school started, and I didn't have a job yet. Principal at a small school called me up needing a full-time in-school suspension supervisor. I took the gig because I didn't have anything else lined up. LONG year...especially in the winter when I was coaching freshmen basketball and had to leave my house at 3:45 AM to be there for a 6 AM morning practice! No football at the school...couldn't WAIT to get out of there!
Next job was right in the town where I lived...it was quicker to walk to work than it was to drive to work! ;D Did 6 years at that school but eventually resigned after getting passed over for the football head coaching job.
Next teaching/coaching gig I took was about 30 miles away...not a bad drive at all. Resigned after a year because I was replaced as the O/C.
Current teaching job is at a great small school...brand-new building, good kids, great staff, enrollment on the rise...that is about 45 minutes away from where I live. I coached football there last year but resigned because the head coach...well, let's just say that I won't ever work for that guy again.
Just took a head coaching position that is about 20 miles away from where I am teaching, so that isn't too bad (especially considering that the school where I will be coaching doesn't get out of school for an hour after I am done at my school) BUT, it is in the opposite direction of my house. So, it is over an hour's drive to get home.
The thing is, if I wasn't such a c0ck and got along better with people, I wouldn't have to drive 120 miles a day to coach! ;D

The distance isnt the issue. Time is the issue. When you are sitting in a traffic jam due to bad weather or a car accident and you have a staff and team waiting for you to show up for practice......................its a terrible feeling.

CoachD, you still holding grudges over the whole my vs our debate???

Air--no grudges at all LOL. (especially since your experiences down the road with the coaches helped prove my point! ) If it is only the remainder of the year..it is very doable. Good Luck. PM me with the details on the school if u want.

I go 35 minutes one way. I was an assistant and drove at the most 10 minutes on way. I took the head coaching job at a smaller school and have to drive 35 now. I didnt have to move and I wanted the oppurtunity.

I don't know if this fits in here but Does anybody not live in the community they coach in on purpose because you don't want to see kids/parents in the normal course of your daily life?
