True Story -
We had a kid transfer from DC (Good looking athlete) seemed like a good kid. He comes out late because his parents move.. Well three weeks into the season he gets an injury and it out for a while.. Finally we suit him up knowing he probably will not play much...
Well we are getting killed in the 4th quarter and I figure it is a good time to get some kids in.. I go to him and I noticed he is taking off his cleats on the field. I asked what he was doing.. He said he is done. I said what do you mean... He said he quit... I said "Are you sure you want to do this?".. He walked away.
I sat him down and told him you can quit BUT YOU WILL NOT WALK OFF THIS FIELD WITH OUR UNIFORM ON!!. YOu have to take this off... He looked at me crazy. I DEMANDED HE TAKE OFF HIS UNIFORM AND WE HAD HIM ESCORTED OFF THE FIELD!! He left in his t-shirt and someone gave him some shorts... His uncle drove him home.
Looking back it might not have been politically correct but the message was sent. And all of the other kids in the program saw it too.

I think that about sums it up... I'm all for second chances, but it sound like this kid has already had plenty. He made the choice for you, he quit, he's done.

tough head coach to work for....
how do you discipline kids if you know the head coach won't do anything about it?
and you better believe it won't take the kids long to figure out what's up........or if a kid does something worse... "well, you didn't punish joe......why are you punishing me?"
now, you've got mom up there raisin' he!! because the coach isn't equal with his actions......

An update on the situation. The kid got to come back with an apology only to the S&C coach (no form of punishment for his actions). I am the S&C coach and I had a disucussion with the head coach about how I was not happy with the situation. He told me you can not just kick kids off the team for things like that. So I stayed and kept running the offseason program trying to get passed my feelings and was going to let it slide. Then during another intense workout session the same kid takes a knee during one of the drills. His position coach gets on to him and he starts shaking his head no and being a real smarta@*. The head coach kicks him out of the field house and tells him in front of the entire team and staff, "You are done, do not ever try to come back." I was thinking in the back of my mind that the HC was finally fed up with the kid so I decided I was going to let things slide on the past incident and stay on as a coach. However, 1 week later the kid is back in our offseason drills and in the weightroom. Nobody talked with me about it or anything. I asked the HC about it and he said we are going to give him another chance. I told the HC that I was not going to work in an environment that lets the kids do whatever they want to when they want to. I resigned from my position. Good move. You resigned from a potential career killer. From your description, the team in question probably will not be successful. The HC will lose the respect of those around him, players, staff..etc...and the ship will sink. My problem with the coaches like this...and the "save him" mentality is much like NCLB and other educational reforms, when you do things to "save" one, you are potentially screwing over many. The hidden curriculum that this team is learning is that actions don't have consequences. That pi$$es me off more than anything. Nobody ever addresses that issue. Hell, in this thread, nobody addressed what I thought was the most pressing issue. HE WAS COMPLETELY WILLING TO STAND THERE KNOWING HIS TEAM WAS BEING PUNISHED for his actions I deal with that selfish b.s. all day. I deal with the selfish kid who thinks "no talking in the hallway" means "all students be ME can't talk in the hallway". (Elementary school, so the classes get walked in groups places). We have a rule, if you bring gum into the gym, the class stops its PE game and goes outside to pick up trash. The purpose of this rule is to encourage the kids to police themselves. Same kids day in day out try to chew gum in the gym. It is amazing. They could care less about their classmates. What makes it worse...is that the classmates DON'T express their displeasure. They still mug around with the moron who just caused them to pick up trash. I maintain that giving chance after chance only leads to hurting people...not helping them.
