I would love to see more clinics, but with the amount of places that are having seasons I doubt it would be like we saw in the spring. As of now it seems that we will still be able to get together for socially distant workouts, so I’m thinking we’re going to treat the next couple months as an off-season program to prepare for the spring. That makes sense. I foresee more virtual clinics even from the traditional companies like Glazier and Nike as time goes on. Less overhead costs, the ability to have a more wide range of speakers, and almost everyone knows how to operate zoom or a video conferencing platform now. thanks for your feedback True, but we coaches need an excuse to get off campus sometimes and enjoy ourselves, so I hope they keep in-person clinics too.

Again if it is to dangerous to be in school how can you say it is alright for sports. This is where every argument for playing football fails. There’s simply no sensible answer to this question. *FTR, I think we should be wide open on everything but if it’s determined by the PTB that classrooms are unsafe for students you can’t justify football.

Here’s my take:
A lot of schools are having classes virtually and others may have to do so with even one positive case. To try to play football when just being in the classroom has either been ruled out or is in a very tenuous state is stupid.

What would they be able to do about them? I think he is commenting that this switch will again affect spring sports, either by moving them to now (which is what some have talked about in parts of the country) or just by "squeezing" them with the fall sports running concurrently. Yes.

They just announced that fall sports will be played in spring. I don't know any details. Neither do they I would venture a guess. In this particular situation, all that can really be done is either outright cancel, or push back the time and then hope. What about spring sports that were cancelled last year?

Those of you who are playing:
1. Are you starting the school year on campus, virtual, or both?
2. What is your school’s response if an on campus student tests positive?
3. What is your football team’s response if a player tests positive?
4. What is your football team’s response if a player from a recent opponent tests positive?

Good stuff, Coach. What’s your protocol if a player tests positive?

So today around 3:00 I was in a building near our football field when another coach told me a team we play the second game of the year (a military boarding school) pulled up in a couple of vans (probably 20 kids) and was standing in the parking lot by our field. I walked out there to find out what they were doing.
There was an assistant coach giving a motivational speech to their team about playing us. The HC (who I know but not well) was in the back of the group. I said, “Coach, what are you guys doing here?” He said they were trying to motivate the kids. I said, “Well, Coach. I would rather y’all not do this on our campus.”
The HC told the AC they needed to go and they left.
It wasn’t like they stopped at the road at the edge of campus. They had to drive a couple hundred yards passed the school entrance to get where they were. I thought it was odd and inappropriate. Never seen that before.

To me, the fate of 2020 football lies in this question: What is the response when a player tests positive during the season? If it means the whole team (and possibly the last team you played) has to shutdown and quarantine and be tested and all that jazz, then I just don’t see how we play. If the response is to play anyway, then okay. Let’s roll.
But I will be honest with you: Unless my salary is cut significantly as a result, I don’t know that I even want to play football under these circumstances. The school year is going to be miserable enough as it is without having to follow all these COVID protocols out on the field too.
We all like to go to the beach but not when it’s raining.

Our school suspended all athletic practice for a week. We had a couple members of the same family show some symptoms (fatigue, vomiting) and school decided it was best to shut campus down for the week until we get results back from their tests. Obviously that wouldn't be a viable option in the fall, but for now it's not the end of the world. Hopefully the family involved gets good news here in the next day or so. That is what I think will be the biggest obstacle to overcome. The idea of "that wouldn't be the viable option" in 4 more weeks. If something is the "right" decision now, shouldn't it be the right decision in October? Yes, because nothing is going to change between now and then. My question is what's going to happen when one of our players (or even one of us) contracts COVID? That's the burning question and you know it's going to happen with a lot of teams. Will he have to quarantine even if he feels okay? Will the whole team have to quarantine? Will the team have to forfeit the game Friday night?

The only goals I like are the ones every team you will ever coach can achieve. I like that , can you provide examples? I'm not really a goal setter. I just prefer using concepts like getting better every day, focusing on the little things, being where your feet are, playing with discipline, and all that jazz. You always play to win, of course, but some years winning a state title or going undefeated isn't realistic enough to throw up on a gigantic sign in the weight room. And when you do have a really strong, veteran team one year and you emphasize those goals, what do you do the next year when 20 starters graduate? Not every team is championship caliber, but every team from Pop Warner to the NFL can get better. I think it's best to emphasize that.

1. It pays well. 2. School and community support the program but are realistic about expectations. The Transalaskan Pipeline is one of the most impressive engineering feats in modern history, but it would be useless without the oil that runs through it. It takes more than infrastructure to win. 3. It's an all-around good school where people would want to send their kids for reasons other than sports.

If I were the AD at Tennessee, I would be willing to hire Peyton Manning with no coaching experience. No way I hire Deion at FSU. Manning was cerebral, driven, disciplined, and a great leader. Deion was just a physical freak.

The most difficult part is making adjustments. If you're a Wing-T team and trap, buck sweep and belly are gashing them then and your base defense is stopping them then there's nothing to it. But when you're struggling and adjustments have to be made that's when it gets hard because you can't really step away for a minute and think things through because you're always calling plays and changing your train of thought.

Do you think a coach getting a DUI should be fired? Yes. Perhaps so. But in general we are held to a higher standard than most professions. I see posts on Facebook about every day that would get me in hot water (and very likely fired) if I posted the same content on my page. If Coach Doe posts a picture of himself holding a beer in one hand with his other arm around some scantily dressed bimbo and talks about partying and getting wasted and screwing around, the pitchforks would come out. But if it's a mechanic down at the Chevy dealership, no one really cares.

1. It would fill our HC game, which was cancelled. That could be changed, though.
2. We are not having a JV team this year and after my current juniors graduate we will go from mediocre to terrible.
3. If we don’t play we will have B2B bye weeks.
4. The game after this date will be our most important region game of the year. At least we could spend two weeks preparing for that game.

Let’s say you have a nine game schedule and ideally want to play ten games. The only team you can schedule for that tenth game, though, is significantly better than you. Let’s also say that you’re staring at a losing record already and that tenth game will just be one more loss. Would you stick with nine or play ten?

Those of you who have left coaching... what is a good profession to go into when you have been in education all your life and don't really know much about anything else and don't have any good connections? How can hard working, common sense person start over in something else?

I'm in a tough situation with my job.
My team last year finished 4-6 in my first year on the job. This year's team is not as talented as that one and if we do as well or better it will be because of a year of continuity. The '20 team will be about the same and then the bottom is going to fall out. We're a K-12 private school and I don't know that we will even field a junior high team this year. We have 24 kids playing 6-12. If we do have a junior high team, they won't come close to winning a game.
I have been apart of a lot of success in my career and that makes it harder to deal with mediocrity, but we just don't have the horses to compete at a high level and it's only going to get worse and I don't know how I can make it significantly better. Our tuition is about 40-50% higher than most schools we compete against and we have a large international program in which about 20% of our high school enrollment consists of kids from foreign countries - mostly in the Far East. Athletically, they are dead weight but count against our numbers in terms of classification. The school also has pretty high admission and academic standards.
The positive is it pays pretty well and I like the area, but man, we just finished our second day of practice and I am already dreading some of the games we are going to play this year. I'm 40 years old and the son of a coach, so I have been around football all my life and started feeling burned out on it a few years ago even coaching championship teams.
I have started yearning for a job where my success depends more on me than a bunch of kids and what I make is more in line with how hard I work. But coaching football is all I really know, so I'm not sure what I would do professionally if I tried to change. I'm not married, I don't have kids, and I have been all over the country and much of the world, so I would be comfortable going about anywhere for the right job. But I don't really have a marketable skill set beyond what I'm doing now.
