We have tough time with our kids getting them ready to play in the hourse before the game. When we are around they'll sit there silently in the weight room and pretend to be thinking about the game.....but as soon as they're alone it becomes a free for all....I don't think we are telling them the right things..."shut the f up and get focused" doesn't seem to be working, I'm not sure if they really understand the concept. It drives us nuts....but I wonder if there might be a better way to get the point across that would make sense to them.

I thought of another one...the guy who fell into success at a past school so he keeps getting head jobs...even though he's horrible
there's a guy in our neck of the woods who was on the junior high staff of a team who won state in the early 90's.......never takes off the ring..and amazingly keeps parlaying it into head coaching jobs...even though he is known for running off players....always underperforming teams...and EVERY time this guy takes over a program, there is a mass exodus of assistant coaches the next year...unbelievable

Let's hear some head coach horror stories, without naming names of course. Some of these will differ based on perspectie, but here's a few I've heard off the top of my head.
requiring all coaches to wear high socks, becuase that's what they did back in the 80's when the won the state title at X high school.....naturally, it was the socks that got them that ring
no sunglasses on the practice field "you gotta look them boys in the eye coach!"
a$$ chewings galore for small things (no whistle around the neck at practice, gum chewing, etc.)
facial hair policies for the coaching staff.....annoying
"breaking down" after coaches meetings....(i swear I've heard this)..."great meeting guys.....1...2.....3.....eagles!!!"
the extremely straight laced guy....if word got back to him that members of the staff were drinking or cussing.....on their own time...in their homes....they would be immediately in the doghouse and he would work to get them fired.....

Wow, I didn't expect such an outpour of responses, thanks to everybody for the input. All in all, it's a sh!t sandwich and one way or the other we are going to have to take a big bite, I'm leaning to-wards keeping them and trying to play out some semblance of a schedule. We are in two a days now, but once school starts there will probably be a few that come out, normally I hate letting these guys play, but we may have to make some exceptions. Either way, Thursday nights aren't going to be much fun, but we'll take our lumps and drive on. My mind was made up when I pulled one of the kids aside and asked him (JV QB, who isn't very talented but is the kind of kid that you love to coach) his response was pretty simple...."we don't need those dang freshman, and I don't want to just be a practice player on varsity..give us a chance coach!"
........it surprises me sometimes how often I really don't take the time to look at things from the perspective of our players, I get caught up in everything that goes on, and before you know it I'm treating them like chess pieces in my own personal game instead of what they are...just kids

Coaches, I have been looking for suggestions to this problem, and in desperation actually started browsing the web to see what I could find, I had no idea this site existed, what an unbelievable resource for coaches all over the country, you guys are doing our profession a great service. Now, on to my question
I'm at a smaller school and we have a problem at our sub varsity levels, our freshman team last year was gawdawful, very few natural athletes and the ones they had were more interested in video games, I've never seen anything like it. As a result, as of the start of practice this season, we only had 9 kids in the whole sophomore class come out for football, combine that with the Juniors we've got that don't play varsity, and it totals to a whopping 15 players to make a JV team.
The good news is, we have a fantastic freshman class coming in, that we are looking to be the future of our program.
As we see it, there a few possible scenarios:
Play JV games with 15 kids and get the crapped kicked out of us, not to mention having kids playing offense/defense and every special team
Combine the teams: the problem with this is that we have now taken that good freshman class and made them compete against other teams sophomores and juniors, when the could be playing against other freshman and having success
Move up only the best freshman to the JV squad: problem here is, we have not diluted the freshman team, we stand a chance of having two bad teams at the sub varsity level instead of just one
Move the JV up to the Varsity squad and only have two teams Freshman, and Varsity: we can all see the issue here, we have now taken 15 kids, promoted them to varsity, but what they will really amount to is a practice squad, none of them will play a meaningful snap on Friday night all year.
We are looking for the best possible solution for our kids and community
I'm open to suggestions
