I def believe that the transfer portal is causing kids to play a level lower than they were in 2018. The extra COVID year awarded to all college athletes in 2020 hasnt helped with either. We should be about to cycle through all of those 2020 extra year kids, and that should open up more spots for HS kids, but unless you are P5 you are generally having to sign a level lower than prior to the portal.

I spoke at one last spring for the first time, I actually really enjoyed it. Like any presentation or lesson, make sure you are prepared. I practiced my presentations several times before the actual clinic. One, that way that wasnt dead air, and I wasnt stuttering and stamering around, and I could learn my transitions. 2 to make sure that the info I have fit in the time slot that I had. I thought I did fairly well, enjoyed it, and thought I would probably do it again sometime, if given the chance.

Smaller school. So sometimes you don’t have a lot of options on your scout team. You have to use whoever isn’t in at the time. You may have to use players out of position OR you can use your JV starters. Either way. You aren’t gonna get a great look. The first thing I do is script each group and team period. Then I draw cards and put them in 3 ring binder in order of the script with dividers in between periods. I do the play up against the exact call that we are gonna be in on that rep.

LOL. That’s the funniest need a game post I’ve ever seen. But he probably needs to add, we are also changing to an already 10 personnel offense.

Not in an actual football period, but it was during a middle school P.E. class... One of my assistants, who is a parapro who was outside with a kid he was charged with keeping an eye on, started having the players play a game he did as a kid. He called it Punt, Pass, Kick. It starts at the back of the far endzone. You punt the ball wherever, then throw it from that spot, then attempt a FG from that last spot. The kids loved it. I don't know how it would work with a full class, but it kept 10-15 of our football players from getting in trouble during a very unstructured window of time. This is one of our team events during our "Trojanlympics" I mentioned earlier in this thread.

Not before winter break, but on the day before Spring Break we do Trojanlymplics. We divide our kids into 5 teams. And we would have a series of events, some were team events, some were individual events where you picked one person from each team. Some were kind of silly/fun. For example, we would do med ball relay (team). Then goal post hang (individual). We would finish the day off with some ice cream, and we would tell the kids to wear beach attire, swimming trunks, tank tops, hats, sunglasses, swimmies, etc...

We probably wouldn’t. But that’s bc being a smaller school we may not have an R2 to put in. Good chance we just let the second one hit and call peter and don’t catch it though.

If you dont have them during class to lift during the school day, you cant expect them to lift during their other sports season. If you have a practice or skill development session, you cant expect them to come during their other sports season. There are expectations, however, we reward kids for meeting them, instead of punish those who dont. I dont feel like you can punish a kid for not being at a spring skill development because he was at baseball practice. You could come to 0 off season workouts and still come out for the team on Day 1. The rules are that skill development sessions arent mandatory, so while you may highly encourage them to be there, you cant keep a kid from playing who hasnt been there. Now, could you cut him later on. Sure. But I think you have to let him come out.

WIAA3-several things you could do to earn points. You can earn points in wt room for max outs, runs etc... You can earn points for grades. Community Service, fundraisers, things like that. You can also lose points for poor grades, poor behavior in school etc..

Selection based on off season points total. I ask the kids what number they want to be when second semester starts. If 2 kids want the same number. The guy with the most off season points gets it.

We do pregame meal after school unless long bus ride dictates earlier. We have churches come in and cater the meals for us. Sometimes it’s a business or individual. But usually a church. The kids then get till 430 to kinda do their own thing. Hang out, poop. Whatever. 430 position meetings. Quiet time after till 530. Tape/dress. This is for home games. A lot of times for away games we are loading the bus at 430

I am the HC and the DC. So I spent quiet a bit of time on film on the weekends. Just on defense I would say.
Friday Night-an hour doing tackles and just kind of reviewing the film Saturday-1-2 hours reviewing/grading our film from Friday night, kind of depends. Then, I would estimate 3 hours breaking down our opponent-against depends on if I break down 2 or 3 films. First time through the film, I am watching and just tagging formation and play. Second time through tagging D and D and gain and some stuff like that. 3rd time through making my hit chart. As mentioned, game plan wise we usually dont have to do a ton. Your system takes care of most of it. But there is always a screwy formation or two that you have to figure out. I am usually just kind of thinking about it and formulating a plan in my head Saturday evening and Sunday morning. We meet as a D staff for 2-3 hours. I generall say here is what I am thinking. But I usually have somethings that I ask their opinion on, and even if I give them a certain aspect of the game plan, I ask what do ya'll think about that.

No. It is illegal where we are for 8 graders to work out with high school kids. Now what we do, is we bring in our rising 9 graders after school during the months of March and April to workout. This teaches them HOW to lift and move, so that when summer workouts start, they will have some kind of idea what is going on. However, when they come, they are the only ones in the wt. room.

As much as I hate to say it, we used VidSwap in place of hudl sideline the last 2 years due to cost. We will probably go back to hudl sideline after this year. We had 1 game where the replay system worked correctly the entire game.

Dublin Georgia. Hosted by Roger Holmes and staff from Dublin HS. He just released the dates for the 2024 clinic, March 8 and 9 I believe. Its about 4.5-5 hours from my school, so starting in upstate SC, you would cut off maybe 30 minutes of drive time.

Southeast Wing T Clinic. For HS coaches. Mostly by HS coaches. I have been several times. And there is something for everyone. Traditional wing t room. Hybrid wing t room. Spread room. And defense room. Highly recommend it. Coach Holmes and his staff put it on. Great clinic.

How are they fitting counter? Power? Zone? You should be able to look and tell that. What coverages are they in? You should be able To tell that. What blitzed/stunts do they use most? Finally, what adjustments do they make when they are getting hurt??

The easiest way I know to explain it is power with no puller. Duo right. OL blocks left. RB reads playside LB. He fits the open gap. Bounce it. He scrapes. Bang it up in there.
Most of the time we see it, it is formationed to have someone kick out the end man. Though you could read the EMLOS.

Seeing more and more duo this year than in the past for sure. Still only 1 team really good at it. But seeing it more.

Yup. I agree. Guys have a ceiling toughness. You can increase their toughness. But not past that threshold. To do that you have to do hard stuff. Some of that is just weight room stuff. Heavy squats are hard. High rep squats are hard. Sprinting is hard. Some of it you can have fun with. Do some kind of competition where they do something hard. They really get into that. We do a med ball relay. About 5 guys on a team. Throw the ball. Sprint to it and stop it. Sprint back. Next guy repeats till the ball crosses the goal line and back. You know how many sprints the kids run in that game? And they run them hard as crap.

Do hard things and compete with one another at doing things that are hard. Create adversity and have them overcome it. Start off with thing easier to overcome. And build on it. As someone mentioned. Don’t go overboard or crazy.

We had a call a couple weeks ago that was totally blown and obviously wrong. It directly cost us 7 points. We lost by 7 points. Sent it in. Crickets. No accountability for refs whatsoever. I know there is a shortage of them. I understand we need more. But there needs to be some accountability. Dock their game check 10 percent or something. Don’t let your part time hobby affect my full time job.

Two times I could think they would be nice to have. 1. Early in season when wet bulb temperatures force us to take off pads or practice inside. You could practice later or early morning to beat the heat.
2. Late in season or playoffs when it’s dark before practice is early and you have to go on your game field.

Yep. When I print off the hudl report I don’t see it. And I lose interest. When I write it out by hand I’m involved in the process and just get it better. I also draw scout cards by hand. Helps me learn the gameplan. And doing so I found a flaw in our plan this past Monday. If I printed them out. I’d have never seen it

I input data. And I run reports for formation/plays and D and D. But I still do hit charts by hand and put it on the board. But that’s mostly because I am a visual learner.

Anyone else just growing to hate hudl? First, they sent me the invoice for another school. How the heck does that happen? Then. It took them over a week to send me the correct invoice. They finally sent it two weeks ago. I had it paid the day I finally got it. Now they have locked my account and said I haven’t paid. 🤬. Sorry. end of rant.
