My thing is, why would Broyles deign to meet with them, instead of insisting they first have a sit-down with the coach?

why the hell would you put Darren McFadden at QB when you have THE Mitch Mustain on the bench?
That Houston Nutt don't know nuthin.

they should all be at texas tech if they want to throw and catch 60 passes a game.
If I were huston nutt, I would release thess boys from their scholarships, fire gus malzhan and be done with this.

I think the fly in the ointment is, hiring Malzahn (and thus getting Mustain) stopped Broyles from jettisoning Nutt last year.
Broyles may tell parents Nutt is in charge of the Arkansas football program, but there's only one Head Razorback in Fayetteville, and it isn't Nutt.

This is such a ridiculously portentious article. The basic gist is, "will I get to play and will I get to throw it?"
I don't know anything about the politics of the Houston situation, and I've heard rumors (mostly on this board) that Malzahn isn't being taken seriously enough. To me Arkansas doesn't have Peyton Manning--or even Brian Brohm--but they have some pretty {censored} good backs and are being quite creative in how they get them the ball. If you want to transfer to Chuck 'n Duck U, that's fine but I don't understand this "We don't like the direction of the football program."
Anyway, sounds like some real team players there. If they are lying to these kids, guaranteeing them a wide open scheme, then thats one thing. I don't think a Coach is under a duty to get any player a certain number of touches ("We're used to catching 60 passes a year.").
When these spread college coaches get hired for the pros, and they end up running a more "Pro-style" offense, do their players complain about the "direction of the program"? It's just all very odd to me. If you want to go to a school where they throw it a lot, go to a school with a track record of that and hope you get in the game and the coach doesn't get replaced. I'm sure everyone else on the recruiting trail told these guys the honest to god truth.

to me it sounds very high schoolish. sounds like mommy and daddy got their wishes in high school and now they want to tell a big time college program how to win.
arkansas had bottomed out prior to nutt getting there. he has turned the program around. might not like how he has done it but he has taken it to the top.
truth in recruiting, now there is a novel concept.

If the main reason they went to Arkansas was because they were told very specific things and those things they were told turned out to be false, isn't that a legitimate complaint?
These kids may be selfish egomaniacs. That is not the point. It sounds to me like the coaches who recruited these kids told the kids what he had to to get them committed to Arkansas even though there wasn't an intention to follow through with those things.
Now, I don't think it was handled appropriately. There was no reason for the parents to go public with their complaints. There should have been a private meeting with the head coach and then the parents should have made their decision based on that.
But to suggest these kids don't have a complaint is wrong. Sounds like there is some sleazy recruiting going on down at Arkansas...

Again, I think if Nutt had let the number one HS QB in the country get out of Arkansas and go away to play, he would've been fired. He was already on shaky ground with Broyles (what Razorback coach isn't?)
So he hired Mustain's coach. And, as wildcat implies, did Arkansas promise him and his teammates the sun, moon, and stars? Could very well be.

I can't see houston nutt going gonzo with passing. he has always had a run first, control the clock, use playaction pass. he is a defensive guy. maybe he cave into the pressure who knows.

www.wholehogsports.com/adg/175675/That’s great....but you have point the figure at the parents because they forgot to bring orange slides at halftime. Seriously, don’t they have more important things to worry about like the pop schedule for next year? I just hope Coach Nutt is able to make sure all the players get to play 10 plays (otherwise he might be in real trouble with the Little League President).

Houston Nutt (as ESPN put it) is a weasel, he made a lot of promises and kept none. The biggest promise he made was saying that Malzahn would have control of the offense, which never occured. What little wrinkles Malzahn was allowed to make helped put the team over the top. Malzahn has coached a team that seldom ran the ball (he was a single wing guy for quite a while), so even if he had control there isn't much to say they would have aired it out any more. But it definitely would have fulfilled some of the promises that Nutt made to a very good recruiting class full of guys. Yes, I think that how it went down was wrong, but how would you react IF EVERYTHING you were told in the recruiting process was a lie. (I understand the parents being pretentious and recruiting almost being a positive spin, but this stuff was blatant lies)

IF the coaches said what they needed to say to get the kids to sign, with NO intention of every following through with them, then they were wrong. Future Arkansas recruits - beware!
IF the coaches recruited these kids and told them they wanted them to come to Arkansas, and that they wanted to throw the ball, and that they wanted each player to become the best they could be ... and it didn't happen, then tell the players and their parents to suck it up! Even with the hiring of Malzahn I don't recall the University deciding to rename the school the Arkansas Mustains.
I hope the parents did this on their own and that the players were blindsided by this Pop Warner move by mommy and daddy. If the players were behind this, I would be sorely tempted (tempted, mind you) to bench their butts and let them work to play or leave and have to sit out a year! It's about the team - you want to play on our team? If so, shut up, quit crying, and start showing us why you should PLAY on our team.
Once again, if the coaches lied to you, leave. Period.

Call me crazy, but I would probably give the ball to the guy that is a Heisman finalist and a freaking stud. Why sling it around when you have a superman in the backfield? I like to throw it as much as the next coach, but you got to go with what will give you a win. I am sure that if Nutt believes the direction of the program in the next three years will be with the pass, then he will chuck it all over the field. Let's give him some credit. Who thought Arkansas could be a force in the SEC anyway, not me? And Nutt has gotten them this far. Leave the man alone, and parents, get a life.

Who thought Arkansas could be a force in the SEC anyway, not me? And Nutt has gotten them this far. Leave the man alone, and parents, get a life. I don't think anyone is arguing with your post. The point isn't the balance of the offense. THE POINT IS BREAKING PROMISES MADE TO RECRUITS. Darren Mcfadden was a force last year as well, HOWEVER those kids were promised that Malzahn would be in control of the offense. HE IS NOT. Malzahn would probably run just about as much as they did this year. But those recruits WENT TO THE UNIVERSITY OF ARKANSAS TO RUN THE HURRY UP NO HUDDLE (which malzahn has used as a run oriented offense before at Hughes), not to run the Murray I (with a sprinkle of Malzahn's offense). In a few years, if malzahn stays, they will probably be throwin the ball 40 times a game. Those kids came to that school so they could be developed into that offense on the college level, not to watch the promises a coach made be broken. Those kids weren't looking to catch 50+ balls a year as a freshman. They wanted to develop into those positions, and it is pretty hard to do when you don't even complete 50 passes an entire season against real competition. How it all came about was wrong, the parents actions were wrong, but IF STEVE SPURRIERS WIFE GETS DISCIPLINED BY THE NCAA FOR WRITING THANK YOU LETTERS TO RECRUITS, WHY ISN'T NUTT GETTING DISCIPLINED FOR LYING POINT BLANK TO HIS RECRUITS. Promises made that were broken: 1. All freshman would be given a clear legitimate shot at the starting spot, if not they would be red shirted. 2. Malzahn would have control of play calling and overall structure of offense. 3. The Hurry Up No Huddle would be implemented. Regardless of whether you think these promises were the right ones to make, you are only as valuable as your word. You don't promise a group of kids something and not give it to them. If you can't make a promise you will keep, don't make the promise.

unless some of you guys have a direct connection to this (you were in the living room while these guys were being recruited) then EVERYTHING you hear is complete hearsay. likewise, we are only made aware of what the media feeds us. i read the above article and i saw nothing about specific promises.
i don't know the purpose of this thread and realize this is something the public feels the need to discuss but what benefit will come from it here? this will eventually turn personal ... those FOR arkansas vs those AGAINST houston nutt ...
let's just remember that whichever viewpoint we take, step back a bit and think of all those times when a parent or player misinterpreted something you did/said and you hade to explain yourself to clear the whole thing up. you will find that for the most part, the "truth" lay somewhere in the middle.

(sportsline.com)
“The reason for the meeting was very simple,” Rick Cleveland said. “We wanted to know what is the direction of Arkansas football program. Are we eventually going to get to Gus’s offense? Or are we going to stay with the way we are at present?”
"Rick Cleveland, the tight end's father, said his son was sold "a bill of goods" during recruiting. That bill of goods (Malzahn) was not delivered."

"The purpose of the meeting: The parents reportedly wanted to know whether Malzahn's no-huddle, spread offense would be the Hogs' offense of the future. It was not implemented this past season, which runs counter to what the Springdale Mafia was promised during its recruitment to Fayetteville. "

I think this is a prime case as to what recruiting has become. Rivals adn scout.com have hyped recruiting to a new level, toss in the knuckle head out of chicago adn you get these things.
kids are nolonger interested in what they can do for the univiersity. it is can the university make me a start. get me to the nfl.
I am so glad I am not a D1 coach. you really have to sell your soul in that gig. you are going to say things which are not going to happen.
This is why they should do away with scholarships all together. solves the problem. Be like D3, play for the love of the game and pay your way while you are at it.

up here in wisconsin the parents have been cannon fodder for sports columnists. wisconsin and arkansas go at it on new years day.
all I can say for arkansas is, strap it on tight. you have not see lineman as big as wisconsins in the sec.
they call the wiconsin front 7 the road graders and the 5-11, 240 pound rb the mack truck.

Arkansas plays in the best conference in college football. They are used to playing top-notch defensive lines. And Wisconsin's doesn't even come close. Wisconsin's d-linemen will get blown to bits. As for tackling McFadden, it ain't happening. Actually I am just an SEC homer, good luck to both teams in the bowl game.

I will give you the fact the sec is a tough confrence but when you play in idea conditions all season long it is not that tought. bring a sec school up to madision, ann abor, columbus is novemeber. sec coaches will not come north of the mason dixion line.

I have no love for whining parents and have nothing against Arkansas. We had a kid play there and he did well. I do understand the parents' complaint here. They were given a bait and switch. I don't think that the "everybody lies during recruiting" argument is good enough.
