Have any of you read this yet? I think this is unbelievable that this administration acted this way. I do not understand why so many administrations are so opposed to football, at all levels. My opinion is that their hatred for the sport stems from political ideology, but that discussion is not for this thread. My question is this. How many of you have dealt with bad administration? And what strategies did you use to deal with them? Could Coach Smith have done anything in this situation other than resign? I have dealt with poor administration at 1 college and 2 high schools. And at the college level there was very little that could be done, unless your Nick Saban or Urban Myer, if they don't like you or football, your fighting an unwinnable battle. At the high school level I bypassed the administration and went straight to the parents for my needs. Avoided the administration at all costs. footballscoop.com/news/official-resignation-letter-coach-explains-really-going-d-ii-humboldt-state/

Not shocked by anything that happens in California, especially at colleges.

"I also encourage all current players to remain committed to HSU....Stay together, work together, and continue to persevere through the tough times to enjoy the benefits often waiting on the other side."
“I have made the decision to resign. I simply am not comfortable with the direction of things at HSU and believe that the work environment is not conducive to quality athletic programs and achievement.”
So you guys need to stay but I'm outta here...can't have it both ways

It's a sinking ship and he got off before it took him down with it. It's a true illustration of how important administration is at all levels of athletics.

Publicly he will tell them to stay, but I bet if any of them ask him in a private conversation if they should stay for football reasons, he would tell them no. And the other thing to consider is that a football program from a players perspective is very different than from a coaches.

We had a Humboldt State Coach come by earlier this week and he is lightly interested in one of our players. So, those coaches are still employed and out on the road recruiting.
But, it doesn’t sound good. It sounds like they wanted to get rid of the program and used money as a reason. Once, money was raised and couldn’t be the reason, tension continued between the AD and Coach.

Sounds a little bit like the case with UNO. They hired some well know AD, they dropped football, which they were pretty good. I think it was so they could focus on basketball or hockey? I don't think they are doing that well.

Nebraska-Omaha, the Mavericks, Trev Alberts decided as the AD that they wanted to go division 1 like I said in one of those two sports and thought the resources the football team was taking away so they got rid of it, it was a real good d2 program

Interesting but the resignation letter still doesn't explain why the administration wants to eliminate or downgrade the football program.
What's the real deal here? Was the program too expensive? HFC getting too big for his britches? Football players are doing bad things? Competition from other sports? Administrators just don't like football?
I have to wonder what the impetus for something like this is as these things normally don't happen in a vacuum.

Its California, the liberals that run that state and the education system hate everything masculine. They would love to eliminate football, and have all those football players in tutus, change their names to Nancy, and talk about their feelings. This is just part of the liberal attack on football, America, and everything good about this country. I'm glad I am out of that state, and never going back.

HFC getting too big for his britches? Football players are doing bad things? Competition from other sports? Administrators just don't like football? I have to wonder what the impetus for something like this is as these things normally don't happen in a vacuum. A quick Google search for info on the AD shows that he's someone who came in after working as a failed CEO in different companies (he sells himself as "an agent of change") and grew up in a very privileged background in Canada. His athletic background was in hockey and kayaking as a teen, then he did intramural crew, boxing, kayaking, and rugby in college (as well as walking on in football for part of his senior year) at Harvard and then while getting his MBA at Stanford. He claims to have coached at some point, but doesn't even mention any specific coaching in his official bio, which highlights his background as a CEO and intramural athlete. I don't think he gets football. I think it's clear he doesn't even like or want football. Given his background, he may see football as a waste of money, or he could even be a big believer in CTE and the idea that football is barbaric and has no place in modern society. It could be that he just doesn't like the HFC. You'd have to ask the University why they brought a man like that in to be AD in August... they may have already wanted to dump football or slash the athletic budget and brought him in to be a hatchet man. When I was in college, my alma mater hired a guy like that to be AD. His athletic background was as a tennis coach. He was extremely jealous of the money and attention that football and basketball got, so when he was hired the first thing he did was push hard for the university to drop football, then he ran off the successful men's basketball coach who'd taken them to the NCAA tournament in back to back years. Then he essentially cut basketball's budget while pushing hard to build expensive new facilities and raise the budget for all the other, non-revenue producing sports--he was big on "fairness and pride in all sports." Those teams he invested in had success (that nobody outside of the teams actually cared about), but boosters took millions out of the athletic department and any semblance of school pride or spirit died. The rumor was that the University President who hired that AD had an axe to grind against the football program because they wouldn't play his son, who'd walked-on and was terrible. The President claimed that they were losing nearly $900K a year on football, but the loss of booster money actually exceeded what they saved when they dropped it. That AD lasted for almost a decade until the President resigned. His successor brought in a new AD to resurrect football and build up the basketball program, which are both doing well now.

I played at Humboldt, the last D-II school in CA. There were 28-ish D-II programs in the state prior to Title IX. 3 moved up to FCA, the rest dropped football over budgetary issues, and only Humboldt remains.
Rumors of them dropping the program were alive back around 2001, when I went there to play.
For those of you who dont know the area, Humboldt county is ISOLATED!!! 5 hours from Sacramento/Frisco, 7 from Portland, darn near 3 from Redding, the closest big city. It is a very culturally and socially isolating place to live. A lot of medium-sized fish go there so they can feel important in a small pond. They had some controversy, d!ck-swinging going on a few years ago within the athletic department, and this sounds just like more of the same. Former teammates spearheaded the fundraising efforts, and the school bucked them at every opportunity. Figures were lied about, dates and times are changed. Doesnt explain WHY the prez/AD want to drop football, but this letter helps clarify a lot of the things I was hearing from my friends there behind the Redwood Curtain.
It's sad, the area is going to take a major hit if/when football leaves. It is the only sport that operated in the black (bball and VB both have conference teams in Alaska!!) and has really been the reason HSU has the facilities they have now. Not to mention the demographic shift that will happen at the school. A school, of only 8k people, and region lacking in diversity is going to lose 60+ minority males almost overnight.

With football players accounting for such a significant portion of the student body, it could be professors and administrators disliking football players and wanting the program gone. We've all dealt with those teachers and administrators who just hate football for personal/political reasons and seize on any excuse to make it look bad. It sounds like Humboldt may have a lot of them there with influence. It's a shame.

I'm not going to pretend like I have any insight, but like all other issues, it seems some are quick to rush to one side based on perceptions, stereotypes, and biases.
"Here’s what’s really been going on Humboldt State, according to a firsthand, behind the scenes account from coach Smith."
It seems to me the only thing Coach Smith has cleared up with this letter is that the administration has been lying and balking at his resignation request. Let me ask you though, was the interim AD wrong? Had Coach Smith resigned by sending an email stating his intention to resign? I guess to me you haven't resigned until you actually, or formally as stated in the article, resign which he didn't do until a couple weeks later.
In the letter, there really is no explanation as to why the administration doesn't support the football program or why they are wanting to get rid of it. If money isn't the issue, then why was the decision reversed only after $500K was raised?
What we were given was one side of the situation. I'm not saying Coach Smith is wrong, he could very well be totally right in his assumption that the administration has ulterior motives. However, there are two sides to a story and I'd be at least interested in hearing the other side before I have an opinion.

Yes. Which goes to show that sometimes dropping football isn't the action of some "football hating wussy liberal that hates everything masculine.... " and whatever else vanden48 claimed. Sometimes that might be true, sometimes the reality of the situation is simply that football is a tough sport to maintain for most universities.

Man I consider myself well read and well spoken, but I had to go to the dictionary for this one Care to define it for the rest of us? I'll step in for him: po·lem·i·cal pəˈlemək(ə)l adjective relating to or involving strongly critical, controversial, or disputatious writing or speech. Basically, what Ann Coulter, Sean Hannity, and that jackass atheist guy you knew in college who wouldn't stop ranting against Christianity do. It's when you go all out to argue against the other side and make them look as awful as possible with overly broad, negative statements that paint them all the same and don't concede fair points to them. Example: "All coaches who don't run the spread are stupid, behind the times, and hurting their teams' chance to win."
