Syrup, head slaps... I don't do any of that stuff. I'm going to ask for a raise.

What in the world? I am not sure how many helmets I have fitted but I have never sucker punched a player before. Syrup or not the guy probably deserves the suspension.

When I 1st read this I thought, "oh crap I chest bumped and knocked a player down last Friday in our game as he came off the field after a big takeaway and then when he got up I smacked him in a doggy paddle type of motion on the top of the helmet a few times in excitement and celebration" I'm going to be fired..... Then I watched the video and thought...... "Well nevermind, I'm not that stupid"..... heyzues christos who the heck does that man? that's a full damn wind up to the back of a players dome.

Not that this makes it any better, but did he do that every kid? Did the kid know it was coming? If the answer is yes, than I do believe he thought he was making sure the helmet fit. I don't really think you can hurt someone hand slapping them when they have a helmet on and they know it is coming.
That being said, that was stupid, and yep, he deserves some discipline. How does his hand not hurt? LOL

Yeah, I am gonna go ahead and say there is no way the head slap was a necessary check for a helmet fitting. I think he was trying to be funny and do something dumb to make kids laugh and turned out social media bit him in @$$. Hopefully lesson learned.

Wow. That was one of the stupidest things I’ve ever seen a coach do.
One year we were playing a tight game. And we made a great play on our sideline for a TFL. l was standing about 15-20 yards from the spot behind the defense because that’s where I’d signal in our defense.
As l watch the play finish one of our dumb sophomores that we brought up after Jv season was dancing (the dance included our dummy grabby his own testicles with one hand and pointing at the ballcarrier with the other).
l was livid. It was the most classless thing l had seen on a football field and it was on my sideline. l sprint (that’s probably an unfair use of that verb with my speed) to the kid to get him away from the player. My plan is to get in between him and the kid on the ground and grab and guide him away from the kid.
Well when l got there l accidentally knocked him down. It was purely accidental but l thought for sure I’d get reprimanded. Luckily our admin saw him and saw me and realized what happened.
Still was stupid on my part. l think at all costs as a coach l am avoiding contact with players.

Mondays we go through a "victory" drill where I practice my syrup distribution to child ratio to make sure there's enough to go around. After that I slap random children and head butt the sled for fun. It's called Grind Mondays. We get at it, bruh.

Seems like the head butting should be a live drill, maybe with coach on opposing side of the ball. If you’re gonna grind grind live no dummies.

I don't mind the guy being reinstated. In an era of social media where there seems to be overreaction to mistakes I think the community support shows that his positive actions outweigh this one instance. If it was a joke, it was a stupid mistake. But from the player support expressed in the article his positive actions far outweigh this mistake. If he did that test on every kid, I question his understanding of the current climate of head injuries in our sport. Surely, anyone that has paid attention to CTE and concussion information as well as has taken the NFHS mandated concussion protocol couldn't believe that an unnecessary jolt to the head is a good idea.

True, and I don't want this to turn in to an argument because I am merely speculating, but I could see from the way he was described by the community, that he truly trying to make sure the helmet fit to prevent concussions. I think HE thought this was in the best interest of the kids.

My guess says he was trying to make a joke, but if he is an old school guy I could see something like that being used in the past and maybe it still lingering around as a practice. I definitely think by the community support that he has done positives and that he didn't intend to cause harm. Our society is full of odd things. My son's little league coach last year said he was going to do cup checks. And I was thinking "OMG surely this guys isn't going to try to tap each kid's cup to make sure they have it on." And he didn't. He just made kids knock on the cup to hear the sound. I was okay with that.

Being from Southern New Jersey, I am familiar with this guy, and to call him a loose cannon would be a bit of an understatement. He has a knack for wearing out his welcome and burning bridges. He's in year two at Winslow Twp., and after this incident he may be getting closer to that point. coachkeating33, where in South Jersey are you at?
