One of my top pet peeves in coaching is hearing someone yell general meaningless statements that have nothing to do with actual coaching. We have all heard them and probably have blurted them out from time to time. That's not coaching, it's reacting. You are being paid to coach football, not cheer like a drunk at a bar who has 3 grand on the Jets.
Anyways this year I am getting a handful of new coaches and I want to compile a list of banned statements that fall under this category, here is what I have so far:
Block Somebody Let's Go Come on It Starts Now What the !@#$ are you doing Man the !@#$ up Grow a !@#$ Grow some !@#$@ You aren't listening Wake up Make a Tackle Coach XYZ has no clue what he is doing Catch the ball Are you serious You Suck We Suck Coach XYZ Sucks What are you a !@#$%

I'm guilty of "Let's go," "Come on." They are usually followed by a couple of claps when we seem to be dragging. I'm also guilty of "We suck" whenever I'm asked how our team looks. I say that every year, even when we've had really good teams.
I don't see anything wrong with "you aren't listening." because sometimes it is necessary to point out this particular negative behavior. Perhaps it should be changed to "you need to listen" since directives are often needed.
If I were to add anything it would be "my field." For example: "Don't walk on "my field." I don't know of any coaches who own a field.

Like calling a timeout on defense after giving up a big run just to tell them "We Suck"; I'm pretty sure they knew that already

I once coached with a guy who had the tact of an elephant with chainsaw hands.
He was a walking "what not to say" clinic.
Using the words: Retard, moron, vagina, are all worthy of being banned.
Two of my least favorite are, "Go" and "because." They're both lazy and arrogant.

Someone on here once said "Never call a kid a White Eyed thingy Sucker"...I'm pretty sure you can't say that still.

I don't recall exactly what went down but he was told that he couldn't be a booster and coach. He said phuc you all and took everything with him that he donated, including the field turf.

"Water is for pu*sies"
One that I hate (can be fine depending on context) is "quit freelancing". Coached with a dude who would yell that 5 times a game at least, but never offer any coaching points to go with it.

I believe there was a post of similar nature floating around about a year ago. I think the big thing to remember is most of the time when someone says something like this they are just thinking out loud. If I have a kid trying to break his max squat mark I may yell out, "Drive, Drive, Drive!" while he's going for it. This is me just getting excited out loud; and I don't think it would be any better if I yelled out "Weight over your heels, keep your chest up, utilize your hamstrings, don't be overwhelmed by the weight or distracted by people watching." Even though those would all be correct things to 'Coach him up on'.
Along those lines if I have players who are slacking in practice and not giving a full effort I may bark out, 'Move Faster' (which is one of those things that was prominently mentioned the last time this sort of thing was brought up). Now, should these statements be made all the time? NO, in fact if you are using them all the time then you are probably not doing a good job coaching. But to ban them outright is also a mistake as sometimes we are just thinking out loud, or getting excited in our job. More often than not these phrases are just motivational cajolings or coaches wishing and thinking outloud.

I'm trying to eliminate the word "don't" from my coaching. I don't want to tell them what not to do, but rather tell them what to do. For example, instead of "don't lunge" use "drive your hips" or "keep your feet underneath you."

I wonder if removing turf is more expensive than installing it?

I wonder if removing turf is more expensive than installing it? Was trying to find an article about it. I may be mistaken and he may have just left them with the bill because it was getting run down and needed replacing, as opposed to rolling it up and taking it. Still unclear as to what happened. He for sure took a bunch of other stuff though.

IE they know it's a correction for a specific wrong. 2 Sometimes coaches don't realize they're saying something taboo. If you create a list of taboo coach sayings, then you also need to create a list of the proper alternatives. A lot of times it's learned behavior or habit. Sometimes it's cliche and there is no context to what it really means. Coach your coaches to how they coach and how they coach it.

I'd add guys who say, "if you touch it, you catch it." Coached with a guy that said that for a while. Great coach, just such a grating phrase to hear. You jump to the max of your vertical and are only able to put the very tip of one finger on the ball, I'm not going to act like you had a chance of catching that.
Besides that, it's very unproductive. I have a hard time believing that any player on our team, no matter what I might say to myself at times, doesn't have the sense to know that he should generally catch things that are coming at him when he has the chance.

I'll say some of these phrases can work even though they are those "worthless" phrases. I guess they could serve as attention getters, buzz words, etc. and their worth is based on the how the conversation goes afterward. Even though I also hate "block somebody", it's not terrible as long as the next thing the coach does is explain that when the guy you were aiming to block blitzes away the next place you should look to find a block is here or here, rather than standing around. Not really useful, but not a crime, I guess. Just devil's advocate.

I'm talking about just repeatedly yelling these out at face value and thinking that counts as coaching a kid up.

I hate all ambiguous phrases that are yelled at kids. If you don't have something specific, that will help a kid, just shut up.
Baseball is full of mindless phrases repeated by coaches.

I think if you follow it up it's fine. In this context we were coaching freshman in an area where most of the kids couldn't even tell you what freelancing meant. I learned a lot in that job. I'm a line coach naturally, but learned how to teach DBs when they were freelancing.

One of the better ways to tell the difference between a good coach and a terrible coach is to pay attention to how often they're using these phrases vs saying something useful. I, sadly, have coached with one or two guys who only open their mouth to say one of these and little else.
