Oh sheesh a guy I formerly coached JV with was a walking encyclopedia of coaching phrases that need to die.
"Make a tackle!" "Block somebody" "You look scared" "You're playing soft" "Hit somebody"
Just to name a few...sad part is the guy actually knew a respectable amount about football, he simply felt it was beneath him to try to teach the finer biomechanical aspects of the game or deal with players who weren't foaming at the mouth to get better...
Disclaimer: I was guilty of using some of these phrases as recently as 2012

I have worked for several head coaches and the one with multiple state championships relied heavily on these "banned" sayings.

One of my all time favorites: I coach at a place that has a lot of hangers on who get on the sideline and people who hang on he rail of the bleachers. We're walking back to the locker room after a 1st half where we're getting beat by a team that is much better than us. We're not playing poorly, the opponent is just that much better. Well while we're walking back you hear one guy screaming, "Coach just tell em to hit. They got to hit. Tell em to hit!!!!!!"

"Don't over coach it"...... usually most often stated by someone who is in no danger of ever over coaching anything..... F*ck that 100% over coach it

My son's little league coach always yells "swing like you mean it!" What the heck does that mean? The bad part is all the parents picked it up and yell it too.

Phrases that sound like coaching but really contribute nothing:
"watch the option!" "watch the fake!" "watch the pass!"
What, watch them go all the way into the endzone?

"Catch the ball." You don't think he was trying to? Great coaching point. Herd saban chew an assistants a$$ for saying that instead of coaching him

Pretty much anything said on Friday Night Tykes by well pretty much every coach on that show....just have your guys binge watch that crap and say....Don't do or say any of that... That show is definitely a guilty pleasure. The incompetence/insanity is pure comedy. The thing that irks me the most about that show is the dangerous hitting drills those clowns aka "coaches" put those kids through. As if our jobs to promote the safety of the game wasn't hard enough...

I have no problem with "your playing soft" & no problem w/ "what the #$%^ are you doing?"
Maybe not that exact word but sometimes after drilling a concept very thoroughly we go to team & the only thing that comes to mind is......."what the $%^& are you doing?'
What parallel universe are you in that you gathered to do "this" from what we just worked on?
Nope, have seen some strange stuff. Sometime you just have to say "what the $%^& are you doing?"

Hate to admit it but SUPER GUILTY. One time we were winning a game by 4 points and the other team was threatening w/ about 1 minute left & I yelled watch the screen, watch the trap, watch the boot.....ah.....just...just....watch everything! The line judge started laughing his a$$ off at me. It actually broke the tension b/c I realized what a jacka$$ I sounded like. Fortunately we went on to win. Pretty sure my reminders did not play a big role.

Great thread! I say quite a few of these, just not often. I also follow with coaching points. Another post mentioned it but I have really been trying to coach from the affirmative. That said, I do believe in pointing out what was wrong. Instead of " don't lunge", I'd say "you're lunging" and follow with a coaching point. I used to be bad about "let's go" and addressing a group as "gentlemen", Friday Night Tykes broke me of that ch!t quick.

I hate all ambiguous phrases that are yelled at kids. If you don't have something specific, that will help a kid, just shut up. Baseball is full of mindless phrases repeated by coaches. Baseball is a mindless activity in itself.

"know the game" is a phrase I've heard a few times...it's the coaches job to TEACH the game and if you just yell "know the game" instead of what they should do/should've done then you're not coaching.
I also hate it when someone says to give 110%...because if you only gave 100% you wouldn't need those sliced oranges after the game

Little different slant on this but when I enquired about a kid I thought would make it at the next level and things didn't pan out, his university coach said "Just remember, coach, pu$$y is undefeated". Sorry about that one in advance if I get censored.

I say some of these during conditioning, like "let's go" and others. But never "you gotta hittem boys!!", because of this forum I was able to avoid that in my first year last season.

Can we make special mention for coaches who habitually argue with refs? It's okay to question for a moment but to harp on a call play after play is juvenile. Come on coach, dude isn't going to change his mind. Do your job and coach your kids.
Some of these guys I saw at a 7-7 tourney this weekend were so bad, I felt sorry for the refs. You couldn't pay me enough to officiate.

"Hit 'em. Just *#$%ing hit 'em" is the one that I hate the most. Had a guy on a staff that was all he said. Still a running joke in the coaches office.

"Catch the ball." You don't think he was trying to? Great coaching point. Herd saban chew an assistants a$$ for saying that instead of coaching him I am guilty of this. However, it got reaults. What I was suggesting to our receivers is focus on the catch first and understand that is your number 1 priority or you will be standing on the sideline with me.

Because, obviously, the QB forgot what his job was on that play.

At the coaches meeting after a game. "he's gotta be a football player and make that play". Usually said after a player screws up on a situation we haven't prepared him for. Also, same scenario - "Be an athlete!"

It's like I have heard coaches on both sides calling kids soft more this year than I have before. It may be that I am in a new area though. I don't love the term. I think some kids are soft, but usually softness is a combination of lack of preparation and lack of conditioning.

Haha just throw it, I would be guilty of the opposite this year; at first I would say get rid of it, but as the season and the INT's progressed I would say if read 1 aint there and you can't get to read 2 pull it down and run or eat it, which basically on fridays turned into run it or eat it.

Block somebody really gets old. I am the OL coach and the first thing I do when my guys come off the field is I say what are we getting inside in terms of alignment. We discuss. Now I am guilty of saying on especially bad plays that we didn't block a soul on that one. I only say that after we have discussed and drawn things up on the sideline.
Come on you can do it. Well if we could we probably would.
Also from the stands it gets old hearing that's all on coaching right there. Yea sure its all coaching when we had 6 people hit the guy as he took it from the 5 into the endzone and 3 of them hit him in the backfield. Of course I guess it is my fault because I've got your kid on the field and he is as aggressive as an 80 year old nun.

I'm guilty of "Let's go," "Come on." They are usually followed by a couple of claps when we seem to be dragging. I'm also guilty of "We suck" whenever I'm asked how our team looks. I say that every year, even when we've had really good teams. I don't see anything wrong with "you aren't listening." because sometimes it is necessary to point out this particular negative behavior. Perhaps it should be changed to "you need to listen" since directives are often needed. If I were to add anything it would be "my field." For example: "Don't walk on "my field." I don't know of any coaches who own a field. LOL a few years ago something happened at a nearby school where a big time donor was the OC. I don't recall exactly what went down but he was told that he couldn't be a booster and coach. He said phuc you all and took everything with him that he donated, including the field turf.

Like calling a timeout on defense after giving up a big run just to tell them "We Suck"; I'm pretty sure they knew that already I've never heard that in a timeout from a coach to the kids, NOW over the headsets coach to coach, oh yea , im sure we all have heard that and then some!

I hate when I catch myself saying "about" or "kinda".
For example, on a route go about 8 to 10 yards. Or I want you to block so & so but kinda keep an eye out for the blitz.
I find then when I ask a kid to do something "about like this or kinda like that" I get about what I want or something kinda right.
If I speak in grey terms I get grey results. I have made it a definite effort to be very black & white in my coaching over the past few years. I try to speak in more exact terms.
