Let us know. I'm interested in knowing how it compares to Above the Line.l before I buy it. it would have to be a pretty good book to be better than above the line...much of which which comes from Tim and Brian kight can also follow them on Twitter. I had a chance to have a small group clinic w them ...pretty awesome..one small criticism I had from above the line is that he mentions that he was using some of these techniques he learned from Kight while he was at FL. He did not meet the Kights until he got to OSU...Steve Addazio BTW introduced Meyer to the Power of the Unit concept.. That's what I'm saying. Above the Line is easily one of the best books I read. Just trying to find out if this is a book I NEED to read.

I thought it had some actual actionable ideas that were beneficial to me as a coach and to our players. Coach Jackson talks about how they build mental toughness and drive competitiveness in their program. Everywhere he has been he has built programs that have beaten people they shouldn't beat. What intrigued me was watching them beat a couple of programs they had no business beating. Not just beating, but hammering them. They had a 145 pound kid toting the rock and an offensive line that looked like our freshmen team. But they flat out got after it. That's the thing about this stuff. There are a lot of people that talk about culture like it's a mystery. Culture is simply the attitudes and behavior attributes of a particular group, team, or organization. It exists whether you build it or you don't. Every day we are building a culture within our programs. You build a culture by design or by chance. It all starts with relationships, but it goes far beyond that. We visited Tom Herman's program at Houston and they talk heavily about culture. I read Urban Meyer's book Above the Line last spring and it was tremendous. Nick Saban and Pete Caroll have great books. What do they all have in common... Culture. They talk about having a process for building your culture. I learned the hard way how culture mattered. We had 7 D1 kids back early in my career and went damn 5-5. It was a disappointing season because we had the talent to win it all. We had in fighting and leadership issues. We had selfishness. We had really talented kids that were mentally not tough. We researched in the off-season about motivation and building leadership. We visited a very good program and they talked about "culture." That's the point of Randy Jackson's book. Your culture is more important than your strategy in determining your success. Your system doesn't matter if your guys don't play hard. Your talent level doesn't matter if you don't play hard. Your talent doesn't matter if your kids are selfish. Talent matters. But at the high school level we have little control over our talent. What we can control is how we develop that talent mentally and physically. Can we get our kids to perform at a higher level than what their talent says they should? I highly recommend the book. What are the specific actionable ideas? I am not going to be the spoiler, but each chapter for uses on a different component of culture. Chapter 6 talks about building mental toughness. I took several things from him in that chapter. I think I do a good job of building mental toughness, but I found a couple of things in that chapter I used. He talks about their boot camp and how they run it. Whether you use a boot camp or not, he has some great ideas. I am always looking to improve our program, and some books offer something of value and some don't. This book did. When I have all the answers I will quit coaching and spend my days fishing.

Nope, won't be reading. I went to Colleyville Heritage and I can't ever support cross-town rival GHS...(just added to cart) “If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.” -Sun Tzu

I don't know Randy personally but do know about his track record and his success at multiple stops which is why I want to read his book. He is obviously doing something right. Now, it might be stuff we already incorporate where I'm at and then again, it might be stuff we can add. I'm always willing to see what others that are successful do.

I think it stems from the time I had detention three days and the dude made me read "the 7 habits of highly effective people" which I thought was really silly but a lot of people enjoyed. Then again what the hell do I know, I have an ingrained distrust for politicians, preachers, car salesman, pyramid schemes, guru's of all worldviews, and pretty much anybody else who tries to build a following around themselves or get rich based on buzz words and being really enthusiastic (ON FIRE BABY!!!!) So u distrust yourself?

We know each other? not sure how anybody on this board could know about those two years down in bixbi where I was a preaching carsalesman managing pyramid schemes on the side.....suppose it's possible

Read it, liked it, will read it again.
I'd put it below Above the Line for a few reasons: 1-AtL had much more financial backing and is therefore a more polished product. Not Randy Jackson's fault at all. 2-AtL had more specifics to take away, imo. Not a knock at all, if I'd read CDS first, might feel the other way around. 3-AtL was more applicable to my situation. Part of this is just the cultural difference of Texas HS FB vs how the rest of us live.
So, wouldn't say it's 'must read' but it's probably 'should read'.

Halfway through and I'm really enjoying it. ]My only issue is that it's hard to build culture in off season when kids play multiple sports and we aren't together all the the time.

I find that difficult as well. You have to get creative and really plan things out when you don't see the players all year round.

I find that difficult as well. You have to get creative and really plan things out when you don't see the players all year round. The way I look at it is this: Not every player plays another sport in the winter or spring. There will be a few of your better players who are in football all year. Just do this stuff with the guys you have. They'll be excited about it and when the baseball players come back, there will be enough by in already from the others that they'll be able to jump right on in. The other thing is that if the off-season is going well, then those guys who are a part of it will definitely be letting those in other sports know all about it too.

Heard him tell this story at the DFW Clinic a few years back. One of the funniest things I'd heard, especially with how he told it.

He had been re-assigned as HC as school he was at and had to report to ISS everyday...not to be the ISS monitor but to sit in ISS like the students.

1. I recommend this book and will be doing a book review of it on my blog some time over christmas break
2. I started using some of these strategies yesterday had our first leadership council meeting
it went much better than i expected
i am not at a school where i could use ALL of Coach Jackson's ideas, but i can use some of them so i am
3. it's only $20 i blow $20 on stupid stuff all the time, i havent gotten my hard copy yet actually, but it comes with an ebook as well when you order, so i read it on my ipad
it is an easy read... i read the entire thing in a little under 3 hours i carved out 90 minutes each back to back nights
then i went back through a few chapters and took some notes
at the end of each chapter there is basically a chapter review with bullet points to highlight the most important elements to take away from each chapter
makes it easy to go back and jot notes of what you want to incorporate

He references Brian Cain a ton. Anybody got info on his stuff? I bought his football book and it was a turd. For the life of me I can't read it. I have tried 4 or 5 times now and just can't get through it. Some people may have loved it but because of this experience I'm wary of buying anything he endorses. I will probably give CDS a read because of the recommendations on this thread however.
