I am seeing what other coaches think are there top football states. I would like you to consider. #1 PASSION, #2 SUPPORT, and #3 TALENT. Here are my top 5.
#1. Texas #2. Flordia #3. Alabama #4 Ohio #5 Penn.
The reason I didnt put Cali on my list becuase I dont think as a whole there not a passionate about the sport as the others, yea they have the talent but i think its becuase the state is so big, if it was as big as Ohio or PA would they be as good.

I am an Ohio guy and all I know is the Ohio vs. USA Herbstreit classic has become a really big deal and it is the best teams in the country vs. the best of Ohio and it is even every year. I am not sure any other state could have their teams compete with the best from the country.
1. Ohio 2. Texas 3. Florida 4. Pennsylvania 5. Alabama

Texas could easily have quite a few teams compete and usually beat anyone in the country - Southlake Carroll, Euless Trinity, Katy, Lufkin, etc.... - more talent and great teams here than anywhere
playin' it cool - Luke

1. Hawaii 2. Alaska 3. Rhode Island 4. Wyoming 5. Puerto Rico I don't know if this is "tongue and cheek" or not but from the few things I see about football in Alaska they take it very seriously. Not with the big budget stadiums and all that but the coaches, players, and communities take it to heart. I also heard from a college coach once that the kids in Wyoming and Montana were some of the toughest SOBs they ever recruited. There is no agruement that the list compiled at the top of this thread is probably right on, but there are some communities in Minnesota and NW Illinois that are very (very) passionate about thier football. The D-1A talent may or may not be present in these communities but the passion and support is. What about Louisiana? I think per capita they have more players in the NFL than any other state.

I disagree Chuck. Alaskans DO NOT take football that serious. The last 7 years I have coached camps up in Alaska. Rarely have full teams come to camp and it is pulling teeth to get them there. Now, the reason they do not take football that serious is commendable. Most schools athletes have to work for their families in the fishing industry.
There are some good athletes in AK, but the quality of the teams is very low compared to top notch states. In the last few years AK teams have been dominated by average teams from CA. And these are the top teams from AK. Granted it is hard to be great when you have only 19 big high schools in the whole state.

I think TX and FL are the two best, after that Ohio, Pa, Alabama, Lousiana, and some others follow, including Cali, below that in the third teir you have NC, SC, Ga, and Miss.

#1 Texas #2 Alabama #3 Georgia #4 Ohio #5 Louisiana

What is interesting is that the majority of people who list their top 5 or 10, a good majority of those states (minus Penn or CA)are Republican states (at least in past elections)! Hmmm, coincidence or................?

I may be biased but I think you have to include PA in these top fives. I think there is something about PA footbal lthat you have to experience to know what I am talking about. I know alot of guys who have moved out of state and coached in other states and they all say there was something about PA football that these other places just didn't have.
Also if anyone knows how many classes do FLA, AL, LA, GA or some of these other states have?

Hmmm, coincidence or................? Those states are deeply rooted in traditional and holding onto "the way things were". Cultural and/or political change is slow in those areas. Therefore the traditional of football and the passion for it is held very high. Alright, off the political subject. Being an Ohio guy and previously raised in Pennsylvania, I'll have to put Texas at the top, but the success I have seen from Ohio vs. U.S.A. games makes the difference slight. The only thing that makes me give Texas the top spot, is because I truly believe you guys are wacko down there ;D and your passion is borderline obsession! The money you put into the sport is mind boggling but man I would love to coach there! 1. Texas 2. Ohio 3. Louisiana 4. Florida 5. Alabama

I grew up and played HS ball in PA and think the culture is great, but as I have looked at returning to PA a few times I have been very dissapointed in their treatment of their coaches. We in Indiana treat our coaches better than the jobs I have looked at in western PA. Better teaching schedules and much better pay. Maybe in eastern PA it is different?

I was just going off the (few) things I have heard on TV/magazines about specific places. I will take the word of someone who has been there.

We can't compete with the rest of the nation obviously but folks are constantly surprised at the football talent in Montana and the fever of it. U of M has been a 1-AA playoff team every year since 1993 with 2 national titles--most years 14+ starters are home state kids.
NAIA level Carroll College won 4 straight national titles and has a great program.
Like I said, we're not like those big boy states, but it's pretty darn good football with great history. Former Minnesota coach Bernie Bierman got his coaching start here as did Dennis Erickson, Sonny Lubick, Bob Petrino, and a bunch others.

No offense but NC should be 50 out of 50...don't have spring practice and heaven forbid football season has some carry over into basketball season....

Texas is just on a whole different level. IMO they should probably be ranked 1. 2. and 3.

However, with two of three Heisman finalist and both BCS Championship game coaches from Ohio its hard to put them too far behind them in talent produced both on the field and on the sidelines.

Here is something that I found it is interesting. The study ranked all 50 states and the District of Columbia based on five different criteria: percentage of professional football fans (Mississippi ranked 21st), percentage of college football fans (15th), percentage of varsity high school football players divided by the state's male population 15-17 (3rd), percentage of signed NCAA Division I recruits for 2006 divided by the number of 11-man varsity high school football players in that state (7th), and the percentage of NFL players in 2005 divided by the number of 11-man varsity high school players in the state (8th). The states ranking in the top 10 included (in order of finish) 1. Mississippi 2. Georgia 3. Louisiana 4. Ohio 5. Alabama 6. Texas 7. Virginia 8. South Carolina 9. Kansas 10. Florida. www.nfl.com/news/story/9619858
