The college D1 championship game is a JOKE! How can FLORIDA jump past MICHIGAN? The only reason is because their conference has a championship game....If they don't have that extra game they aren't even going to play for the championship! Now yes I am a Michigan fan BUT I can admit FLORIDA is deserving BUT should not be in just because they had an extra game....Heck if MICHIGAN would have played PO DUNK UNIVERSITY for another game they would be in! ABSOLUTE JOKE!

BROPHY!
I know you watch football....If Florida doesn't have a championship game then they are not in....THe only reason they jump is because of that last BULL CRAP game....Is that fair? Throw out the last game and its over....

if USC doesn't lose to UCLA, we wouldn't even be having this discussion....
I can see the argument for the rematch of Michigan OSU, but that game was essentially over the start of the 2nd half...WHO WANTS TO SEE THAT GAME (again) besides Big Ten fans?
If the Big Ten had a championship game (my major gripe against the Big Ten) you eliminate #1 and #2 teams being from the same conference. But then, why would the Big Ten do that when they are sharing revenues of BCS games amongst the conference?

Looks like Notre Dame is going to be getting beat by LSU> Michigan / USC would be a good matchup - I'll take UM there Auburn / Nebraska BSU / OU lots of good matchups, IMO.

I've already said I like UF and Urban Meyer so I'm not going to backtrack..
But you have to commend Lloyd Carr for taking the high road and not campaigning for his team like Meyer has been doing. Reminds me of what Mack Brown did two years ago for UT.
No use for me crying over spilt milk for me. GO BLUE against USC.

I disagree...if I'm a Michigan fan, I'm p i s s e d that Carr WASN'T politicking...what good did "taking the high road" do for him? Absolutely nothing. Good for Meyer for using the media to promote Florida's chances for playing in the national championship game. Carr should have been doing the same!

Big 10 vs SEC let's do it!

all that "promoting" affects only 1 poll ... the coaches poll. and, i doubt he had anything to do with one coach thinking florida was better than michigan or whatever. the promotion affects the media (and therefore, the public's view) but has nothing to do with how a computer views a win or a strength of schedule (whatever that is ...lol) the whole thing about broadcasters throwing out "meyer campaigned for a spot in the bcs" is to throw MORE gas on that fire.

Not when it makes you resort to bashing another team, which Meyer did w/Michigan. You should never have to trash another team to promote yours. Carr let his team's play speak for itself. Losing by 3 to the number one team on the road and having that be your only loss should have spoke volumes, but I guess Meyer's mouth and Florida's thumping of Western Carolina was louder ;D
I do think Meyer was heard though. Don't forget the Harris poll too Huey. You mean to tell me Michigan was ahead of Florida in both polls for 7-8 weeks and NOW all of a sudden Florida looks like the better team?
My hat is off to Carr and if everyone returns next year Michigan should be loaded with talent. Go Blue!

I'm fine with this game. I probably would have been fine if Michigan was in it. If Florida wins and Michigan wins, then Michigan can do all the politicking it wants. Big 10 v. SEC, Florida (where everybody recruits) vs. the Midwest, one traditional power vs. the other, it'll be a great game. I saw Michigan go to Ohio St. play well, keep it close, pull within 3 (but was it really a 3 point game?) and lose. Is anyone saying Michigan clearly should not be in the game? No, but all we're left with is our best guess, and this guess is fine.
Had Rutgers not gotten a FG retry Louisville would be in the game; USC lost to Oregon St and was a "shoe in." Anyone who says the BCS is designed for the perfect game is lying, and with this one half the country was going to be mad. That's how it goes. The BCS this time didn't get it clearly wrong, and gave Ohio St a worthy opponent--that's all it is really designed to do, despite what delusions of perfection anyone might have.
All I was going to say, which is moot now, but people who feared the "rematch"--I think we all remember the "rematch" between Florida and Florida St for the nat'l title where Florida, after having lost at Tallahasee, won 56-28 or something along those lines, so anything can happen. Anyway, all I know is no one went into college football season thinking it was going to be perfect at the end, and it's always going to be a mess, but the BCS is designed to create some big time matchups, and a rough approximation of the top 2 teams.

But then, why would the Big Ten do that when they are sharing revenues of BCS games amongst the conference? Over by the start of the second half? Pretty sure it was a 3 point loss for Michigan and a bad penalty call that kept a drive going for Ohio State. The BCS is supposed to put the 2 best teams in D1 football together for a NC. Dos'nt matter if they played each other 3 weeks ago. Dos'nt matter if they did'nt win their own conference (Nebraska anybody??). Bottom line is the system is flawed and we will never have a TRUE National championship until there is a playoff system.

Michigan got screwed.... bottom line. IMO, I do think that Urban Meyer talking had a lot to do with it...but that is just me. I respect Coach Carr a hell of a lot more for not talking, but as it was previously said, that might have come back to haunt Michigan. It will be a good game, but I really think the rematch would have been better. Is anyone in favor of a playoff.... ?

how did meyer talking convince the sagarin computer or the harris rating or the other computers? the coaches did vote more for florida this time around ... were these HC's swayed by meyer's public promotion, or did they feel florida vs ohio state would be better irregardless of meyer's view. and, could that campaign affect that many coaches (who have probably been voting similarly for a while) so that 1 poll could affect the entire bcs that much? or, was it just the slow, gradual adjustments each computer made after florida played their last game that allowed their ranking to end up higher.
some say "sec is screwed they have to play a championship game" (as well as big 12, acc, etc.) .... other's now saying "big 10 is screwed, they don't have a championship game" ...
gotta' love all the debates, no?

Actually Huey, and correct me if I am wrong, but from what I have heard the computers were dead even between UM and UF. It was the voters who decided this matchup. And I think the Harris poll is of voters too. I may be wrong and if I am forget I said anything lol.

what i'm saying is, yes the human element is what affected this. however, i find it silly that the reason is because of something urban meyer said in the media. i feel it is because the human voters (coaches/meida in the 'know' - supposedly .lol) felt florida vs ohio state was a better matchup for any number of reasons ... the least of which think had to do with urban meyer

The irony is that the BCS was created to end the days where the voters, coach and media, determined the national champion ("determine it on the field"). Then we had teams who were bumped up by the "computers" and we scaled that back, things like point differential, strength of schedule, etc in favor of the "common sense" of the voters. Now it's back to the human voters.
The beauty of a multi-team playoff is that the teams that get left out are tougher to make a case for. I know in the lower divisions Valdosta St got left out of the playoffs and a team they had a better record than and beat got in. Are playoffs perfect? I'm not even going to go that far. Anyone who has ever lost a playoff game knows it comes down to bounces, etc. Were the Steelers the best team in the NFL last year? Or simply the best over that 3 week period? What does a championship really crown? "You were the best team this year" or "you managed to win all of your games over this playoff period and did well enough to get in in the first place." I know I'm not making perfect sense right now, but I'm just saying that playoffs aren't the cure all either, or at least have their flaws.
We simply have a system now that crowns the national champion based on gut reactions and some computer-geek attempts at making order out of the chaos of having 110 or so teams that don't all play each other and play wildly different competition. A playoff would be fairly nonsensical too at the margins, and, let's be honest, in football one game win/lose doesn't tell me in any metaphysical sense who the Best Team For the Year of 2006 is. (We could be having a debate right now about who the #4 team should be in a 4 team playoff. Wisconsin? LSU? Louisville maybe? Boise State hasn;t lost? Certainly the stakes feel like less, but that's no easier. Picking 8 teams is just as nonsensical. USC, West Virginia, Boise, Oklahoma? The old Notre Dame debate again?).
You have to draw the line somewhere. We have one game, this is who got picked. It's not facially wrong. Michigan is not better than Florida in some total metaphysical sense. They may actually be better, but you can't prove it to anyone, so guess what. Let's roll with it.

Urban Meyer got people talking about Florida. He lobbied, and got over. Just a week ago Florida was a long shot to get to the title game, even if SC lost. Now they are there. Him saying if they didn't make it, the system was broken and needed to go to a playoff.
Props to Meyer for getting over. Loyd Carr should have been pumping up his team in the press. Saying how they wanted OSU REAL BAD! How on a neutral field "things would be different". But he didn't and there you go.

if urban meyer's comments did persuade enough people (like this is a popularity contest, but.. lol) then i don't see why this should be considered unethical by him. we should be patting him on the back for doing all he can to help his team get to the championship game.

That's all I'm saying, Huey. You are probably right that Meyer's comments didn't have a lot to do with the way things played out, however, I think that it is wrong to criticize Meyer for using the media to promote Florida's case. With something as subjective, tempermental, and arbitrary, as the BCS, coaches are foolish to leave anything to chance. Carr should have been campaigning much more the last few weeks.

We need a playoff.

Whether Meyer's comments swayed the polls or not, I think it's his job to get his the best oppertunity he possibly can for his players. The head coach has to go to bat for his players as their voice to the public. According to computers and win losses, his team played the toughest schedule in the NCAA. I'm not saying they are better than Michigan, but Mich already had their shot at OSU and couldn't get the job done. Looking back at it I'm sure he would do it again in a heartbeat just as any of us would what what we could to give our players the very best oppertunities.
Go Gators!!!!!
