It's not just about X's & O's!!!
Obviously everyone is entitled to their opinion, with that being said know one is forcing you to have character development in your football program. If you don't believe in it then don't do it, the original person that started the post has a purpose and obviously looking for ways to improve his program.
Fshamrock...I'm not sure how coaches looking to do everything possible to help their kids be the best that they can be is considerate taking themselves to serious. Are you the HC? What is the Mission Statement for your program?
We are going to continue to do as much as we can in personal development and character development in our program with education to try to help our guys have a chance to be more successful in life. -Nick Saban

I'm making the point that there are snakes in this world who would love to have you blow your taxpayer money on over-fluffed platitudes and half baked acronyms that they promise will make better players and men out of the kids on your team. You know what lessons I remember from coaches? I remember how friendly Coach T was with everybody in the school building, just an overly nice guy that seemed fun to be around. I remember how funny the o-line coach was but how fired up he got, we always knew that it meant a whole lot to him. There are countless examples, the best "character development" I got from coaches didn't come from a family meeting with a manual and mission statements, I saw qualities in those guys that I wanted to emulate when I became a man. Oh we did have one guy who was always talking in terms of life lessons, he had acronyms and everything, he would definitely have been active on twitter/facebook/character blogs etc if they had that stuff back then. We generally just kind of rolled our eyes at him and I don't remember anything he had to say. A few years after I graduated he went to prison because his wife hired a PI who caught him with a female student, turns out he had a history of it. It's not about the crap we say, it's about who we are. character development is fine, my point is not to buy into some sales pitch for a character program, if you really want to do that then let me know and I'll flesh out the OVERALLNESS program for you and sent it over, it would take like 15 minutes for me to type up and you wouldn't get anything tangible out of it so it would pretty much be the same as any other.

Coaching is Teaching and that's my opinion.
The most successful programs/companies have a Mission Statement and that's a fact and each person in those organizations understand the mission and that has nothing to do with a manual. Programs without clarity is just a lot of guys doing their own thing.
I agree the actions of coaches is something that's very important.

Our school has a mission statement and we are voted to the Top 10 list in our state every year! What is our mission statement?.....I don't know. And neither do most of our teachers. And I'd be surprised if one of our students knows it. But we got one and it sure pays off!
