Don't mind homecoming week, but I hate the actual gameday. I forgot that until Saturday about three hours before kickoff. There is so much nonfootball bull$hit that goes on that day that the younger assistants had to deal with alumni during setup, so everything got bumped up a level as to who did what. I ended up checking headsets and setting up cameras during friggin stretch.

You might need some time before you're ready to coach. Just 19! I'll be ready don't you worry! Lol Ha. You got a lot to learn, but if you stay in this profession you will.

You know what I really hate about Homecoming? It's not ours. It's when we go to scout a Saturday game and I see the floats pull up. Oh no, another extended halftime.

Also if you keep finding yourself playing in other teams homecomings...... My college team was so bad that I was a Junior before I found out that there wasn't a parade before every game.

Homecoming is an excuse for girls to wear plastic crowns and boys to dress up as they all ride around in floats & cars....also an excuse to piss me off even more and get us less focused on football.

All of our road games last year were homecoming games. You never want to be that team.

How about your starting WS being named homecoming king (announced before the game) and is expected to ride around the track at halftime in the back of convertible to escort the homecoming queen (announced at half time).
In a tight game.
In region play.
That has play off implications.
No wonder we were trying to turn around a program that had 6 NON losing seasons in 54 years.

We had 3 members of our team on the homecoming court this past week. If you've game planned well, it shouldn't be a big deal. I know we played our best game of the year & lost 13-21...it's been a rough start.
We did however sweep homecoming with our starting HB/FS winning King & our back-up SE/FS win Queen (she is a girl who has played football her whole life & would be a good player if she was just a little faster...she is also in band & picked up that vote which wins the vote if a band member makes court).

It's a hollow tradition, and doesn't mean what it used to mean. We try to make it a big deal, but what it's turned into is a larger version of senior night. Complete waste of time and energy, and juuuust enough distraction to make it easy to pi$$ away a football game you should have won.

I just can't wrap my head around 'Homecoming'..... Isn't 'Homecoming' about the folks that graduated from the school, left, and are trying to reconnect with THEIR classmates? One of the reasons I don't like it at the high school level: students have no idea what "Homecoming" actually is. I don't think I even know what homecoming is....or why it was ever important.

So the focus was way off from making a program better. AdMin was all about making nice, and running the script get it over with, nice and smooth and easy; so put 2 and 2 together. Principal wasn't a former coach in any stretch of the word. He hadn't even ever been in the class room. Period. He was a paper pusher He never got out from his desk, just wrote notes on a 3x5 card and had the secretary put them in your box. I was in the PE office during planning and asked the wrestling coach 'what does he mean by....' reading the card. Coach jumped up and grabbed the card and looked at it and threw it in the trash can and said, "If he writes it black ink don't pay any attention to it, if he writes it red ink then you're in trouble". I was a first year teacher and never saw him come to my room or any AdMin, until I got a knock at the door in April and he handed me my new contract and told me he needed it return by April 29. Coachklee, I was a first year and didn't realize the care less direction of the AdMin about the program. When my WS wasn't in the locker room for me to talk adjustments, I first freaked out, then later started polishing the resume. It wasn't about I/me/we coaches wanting to win a ball game. It was more about the program trying to do something it hadn't done EVER, or even close in the last 25 years. We were trying to change the culture of losing and smack dab in the middle a break out season, our team captain is going to play Miss America around the track at halftime.

The school I'm at now, it actually is. We still do the generic Homecoming Court/Queen, and class float/parade thing, but the alumni actually plan on getting together for the game. We had the classes of 75, 85, 95 meet as a class last week at the game. We even got a former 95er that was state champ, college All American, NFLer be an honorary captain at the coin toss.

I've found great admin to work for (former ball coach) & he makes regular appearances in the classroom (7 last year) giving great classroom & coaching feedback/advice. I can see your frustration.

Do any of you guys hate it as much as I do? Our guys aren't allowed to take part in any Homecoming stuff that conflicts with football. They can make all the paper flowers for the float that they want AFTER practice. If they get nominated for Homecoming court they will not be going out at halftime. We're a big school. Our part is winning the game. Let the other guys have their fun. I have to allow my kids out at halftime, but I told them, you don't hear the adjustments you don't play. Luckily this yr only a DE is on the court

A weird thing at our school
No homecoming king
There's a homecoming queen thing at halftime But since no king we don't lose any boys to going out at halftime
We have a "Mr. panther" contest in the winter during basketball season where the boys go out and do all that crap But at least is doesn't interfere with football

To complicate things more, there was a suicide of a transgendered student two weeks ago. The Admin decided to do away with King/Queen/Equal numbers and make the HC court the top 20 vote getters of either/any gender. Should make for an interesting halftime (not to make light of the situation).

Homecoming is a big deal here- nothing more so than the floats.
They've been float-crazy for about 60 years here...hands down the best floats in the state.
We have battled it in the past. Old HC used to speak to the kids about the conflicts and remind them to stay focused etc during homecoming week.
Like fantom posted earlier- all the floats/parades and other activities are for the FANS. We have one job- to prepare to win the game. We get a chance to do something that no other person involved in homecoming gets to do- play the game. I stressed that all that stuff is in vain if we don't do our jobs preparing for the game.
Our float committees will be held to 12/1 in the morning on some nights leading up to the game. We have had kids in the past out working on the floats that late. This year I said early on that if I show up to the floats, and I see a player at it they will be suspended for the game. Plain and simple.
We got rained out Friday night, couldn't play Saturday or Sunday (no refs) so played Monday. We won 56-6 against the #3 D2 team in state.
