I would charge these guys with something...assault/battery? Cowards. Should definitely be banned from the game.

Let the authorities decide. But after a lot of really awful punishment.
Like, 100 yard ladder X 10. Followed by a bear crawl 100 yard ladder X 10. And then a roll 100 yard ladder X 10.

A Soccer referee in our state DIED last year after being punched in the head by a player over a call he disagreed with.
Prosecute them if intent can be proven. School activity, administration should take action (suspension or worse) too.

Very difficult as I'm trying not to rush to judgment. Actions like this are never acceptable, but the moment I saw it I asked myself what made them do this. Is it just completely unprovoked? Just random acts of stupidity? Or is there a backstory?
Again, not condoning any of this...just waiting to hear all the facts.

I just don't know what could have been done by the ref to provoke this? I mean we've all been in games where there were bad calls, but there are very few of these calls that effect someone's lively hood to the point of coming close to physical violence.

Pretty sure this one will be out of the hands of the coach to make a call on. Don't some places have laws against assaulting sports officals? These two need criminal charges brought against them. Not so sure the HC shouldn't step down either. I know I would if it was me. If you have already had two kids ejected and a coach from what I read then this seems like there is a lack of instutional controll.

They gotta go, hopefully to jail. I don't care how bad he was there's no excuse for that.

My thing is our game is under enough scrutiny. And what wingtol said.

Permanent ban by the state assoc.
Jail time, aggro-assault. Explosion.
That's what should be done.

I've been part of games where the refs were so bad they would ask me if we want to accept or decline after calling the flag on us...
BUT this is just awful. I've thrown clipboards, water bottles, pens, etc on the ground, but this is just stupid and the kids should go to jail. I would never let a kid do this much less a coach or anyone else. They straight up assaulted the guy and speared the guy. They should be gone from the school and sent to their local jail and locked up.

my first reaction when i saw it
the coach told them to
that makes more sense to me
i do not see a 17 year old kid thinking of this, let alone 2 of them
if just one kid did it, i would say, wow that kid is crazy the fact that 2 kids did it, makes me think they were nudged in that direction by someone
zero evidence, just speculation

If you have already had two kids ejected and a coach from what I read then this seems like there is a lack of instutional controll. Exactly. As a coach you may not have told those kids to do that, but something is deeply wrong with your program if that many personal fouls and stuff are going on. "You're either coaching it or allowing it to happen."

Had I been a player of the other team and seen this I would have gotten ejected too because I would have been beating on the first attacker and then found the other one. I was not a fighter per say in games but this type of unjust act would have caused me to go beyond normal behavior!

As a coach they would be off the team, but at this point my opinion probably wouldn't even matter. There is obviously a lack of discipline and control from the top, but I cannot see a coach ordering this act. I beleive 2 teenagers are very capable of coordinating this and carrying it out. It's no different than 2 punks jumping someone on the street. Had I been a player of the other team and seen this I would have gotten ejected too because I would have been beating on the first attacker and then found the other one. I was not a fighter per say in games but this type of unjust act would have caused me to go beyond normal behavior! Very understandable, but that would be my adult in me talking. If I was 17 again and on the field as an opponent, I'd probably just stand their in disbelief waiting for another ref or a coach to take control or explain to me what the hell just happened. I don't see many teenagers taking action in this situation unless they knew the ref personally. I know I wouldn't just start swinging at other players. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G900A using proboards

I totally agree with Mike's comments. There is an obvious "plotting" or "calculating" in their actions. If the coach sent this directive, he should also be brought up on charges as well. This is bad.
As a HC I would have stepped down by now (if not immediately after the game). I'm still waiting to hear the results of any investigation being done. I just want to know what the hell happened.
I can't think of very many things that could have been said to prompt these actions.

I am pretty sure when I was 15-17 I would have recognized this as an attack. My dad was an AD so I knew many officials and had a lot of respect for them.

Purely Ridiculous thought process here...but it is from an official, so there you go. I have seen two cases of players intentionally cheap shotting and trying to injure another PLAYER and a FLAG WASN'T EVEN THROWN. No disciplinary action against the officiating crew, BUT here Mike Pereira wants to suspend the entire team without knowing any facts.

Coachd....what facts do you think Periera is missing from this video documented event? The involvement of anyone else. Periera was stating he wants the ENTIRE TEAM to be suspended for the season. Not just the two offenders.

Just a few updates for those out of state an assistant coach for SA Jay has been put on leave for saying something to the effect of "that referee needs to pay"
also the district has filed a complaint with the UIL (governing body) about racial slurs made by the ref
for background: John Jay is mostly hispanic, the team they were playing is mostly white*
*to be fair, I didn't look up any official numbers on either school, but just making a guess based on demographics around the state, could be way off on that
so it's possible there's a little more to the story, nothing to justify what happened of course

What's really interesting is that if I'm the O-line coach from that other school I'm PO'd that everybody in the country is watching a clip of my right tackle doing a crappy job of cutting off a 4 technique on the backside of power
I mean come on dude...

I don't care the back story...life is unfair, refs make bad calls. If this is the reaction of these kids, they can't be good for the program...cut 'em. I've lost games because of bad calls...a homecoming game comes to mind. These HAVE to become teachable moments, or our game no longer belongs in High Schools. Football is a leadership laboratory.
