They say you should never take just one Mormom fishing with you, he will drink all your beer! I thought that rule was for Baptists?

My dad. Knew more football than most people I met and could call a great game. Died my second year coaching. He would have also come in handy the last two years when I needed a qb coach. Ha

One of my first mentors, a former Marine DI, always said don't trust a football coach who doesn't drink.
I have had a beer with Coach Spurrier & a cup of coffee with Joe Pa. It would have to be either Coach Paul Bryant, or Coach Vincent Lombardi. Each man influenced my coaching more than anyone else. My father played against Coach Lombardi on the sandlots of Brooklyn, & I always loved the way he made no excuses. In the late 70's at a clinic the O Line coach for Alabama entertained young coaches with Stories about "Coach Paul" all for the price of a few beers. I still do things today that I learned in that hotel room.

Dead: Vince Lombardi and Bo Schembechler. I would love to just get into leadership, motivation, and culture building from these greats. Living: Steve Spurrier, would love to have a few cold ones with him and Tom Osborne.

I'd love to have a beer with John McKissick and see how the game have changed over the last almost 60 years and to see if he'll reveal where the Fountain of Youth is located.
Larry Campbell to see what was the difference maker for him in small town HS football and how he has been able to keep the cycle going, and going, and going, and going,.......

So many to choose from...
Deceased - Vince Lombardi. The HBO documentary was fascinating to me. He got the most out of his players. Would love to pick his brain.
Living - Pete Carroll. So much damn energy his team plays so fricken hard & with a lot of enthusiasm.

Parcells. I'd love to learn about how he motivates. He would rip a guy up and down and treat another guy with kid gloves. Yet both would run through a wall. It's fascinating how a lot of guys hated playing for hime yet when they weren't on the team anymore, they were dying Ito get back

The story was they made one of the sons sit at the kids table until he got a Super Bowl ring lol. I was lucky enough to spend day with Buddy when I was in ms. He had a horse farm here in ky. He still lives here unless he moved recently. They use to go catch HS games everyone once in a while.

So the first 4 buckets are on me boys. dead: Woody, Vince or John Wooden alive: Parcells, Saban, LeBeau or Bobby Knight. You will be held to this!!! Duece

Probably Dick LeBeau. Although Spurrier would be a close runner up.
LeBeau played at OSU for Woody, both ways. I'd enjoy just hearing about that -- and then the Lions when they were no longer champs but still very good. With lots of characters (Karras, Lane...) Then he's coached with a bunch of good coaches and good teams. And a few not so good teams too.

As an outlier I'll mention a baseball guy: former Seattle manager Joe Schultz. If you've read Ball Four (If you haven't you should) how can you not like a guy who can go to the mound in the 9th inning and tell the reliever. "Eff him. Throw him some low smoke and let's go pound some Bud"?

I wasn't really that interested in sports until I read that book and laughed my a** off. After that, I went out for baseball, then football, which led to teaching and coaching for 30 plus years. It set me on my life's path. I don't know about Joe Schultz, but I would definitely like to toss a few with Jim Bouton, the book's author. (Fantom, if you haven't read Bouton's latest book "Foul Ball", check it out. It's about he and a partner's attempt to resurrect a minor league ballpark and the obstacles in their way. Came out several years ago)
