A whistle, a stopwatch or watch, comfortable shoes you can stand and move in for hours without wearing your feet out, a hat if that's your thing, an appropriate ring tone if you absolutely must have your phone on you and off silent, a written schedule.
I'm assuming you are talking about practical things. Not equipment like balls, cones, bags, etc.

Yes practical things for myself. My head coach does a good job making sure we have the proper equipment for on the field.

Shorts with pockets. A pen. A prepared mind.

In addition to all the aforementioned posts, sheet protector.
Personally I leave my phone in the locker room. I don't want to be disturbed.

As a HC, I keep the phone in case of an emergency. I want to be able to get the AD or medical staff at a moments notice if needed.

I wear a big, wide-brimmed straw hat. Skin cancer is mofo, ain't got time for that.
I heartily endorse Suncloud sunglasses. $50, polarized, comfortable.
I keep a mini Sharpie on my whistle lanyard.
If I don't have those 3 things, I don't feel prepared for practice.
I also usually wear some kind of long-sleeved deal, either shirt or pullover, for the same reason as the hat.
I keep Redbull in the mini-fridge in my classroom. During the season I've got a bit of a problem...

We don't have whistles. Never seen it before but it works great till Friday night and our guy who leads the team flex during pre-game is always looking around for a whistle.

I didn't either. It just got in the way and I risked breaking it. Then my girlfriend got into a car accident and nobody could get a hold of me until my brother called one of my assistants. Now, I keep that thing on me at all times.

I know this is "about you," but we keep contact information for each of our players in our field med kit.

Whistle (my current program is a no-whistle place) Agreed. Why? I can't think of a single positive reason to be a "no whistle place".

Next week I start my first week of football coaching as we begin our season. What are some essentials that I should remember to have as a coach going into a practice? I already know: sunglasses, sunscreen, phone clip. What are some other things I should have or need? For me, none of those three are ever essential in any situation, let alone practice. I just don't wear the first two and I'm too ADD to take a phone out with me. For me, it's probably- My visor My sheet protector with my practice plan in it Whistle and Stopwatch hanging around my neck And some of our pocketed camp shorts Outside that, I'm personally ready to roll almost anywhere any time.

Since you are asking can you tell me any reason we need one besides during team flex on Friday night? I was just always used to a whistle till I got here and now I don't even notice it. Just because you've always done something doesn't mean you need it.

To end plays and drills?
Why do you guys use sheet protectors? I'm in the Bay Area, CA so it's typically perfect football weather. I'm thinking most of you guys use them because of sweat?

I already know: sunglasses, sunscreen, phone clip. What are some other things I should have or need? personal gear -whistle for sure -stopwatch if you dont want to use the one on your phone -hand held video camera (quick film of reps to review later) -Notebook - (you never know when you will need to make a note) Equipment: -Cones, shields, heavy bags - of course -7 trashcans! (makes a full offensive line and 2 ends for Defense work) -tennis balls - we use a ton of tennis balls in practice for different drills

I tried a whistle once, never really liked it, I do think one coach needs it to end a play. Drills I can end on my own. Personal preference.

One day I left it in my pocket. That very day, we had a player go down with a very serious disorder that affected his internal organs. I fortunately had his parent contact information in my phone and I was able to call them immediately after dialing for 911. We were told that time was of the essence in his particular situation. I carry my phone. 90% of the time I forget it's even there. But I want it handy in case I need to communicate with someone quickly.

Just because you've always done something doesn't mean you need it. We use our whistle to reinforce finishing. We want to train our players to start on the snap and finish on the whistle. That is hard to reinforce when you don't have a whistle handy. Also as the head coach, I like to dictate when a play ends. Currently we have quite a few guys who are injured and dinged up and so we are being a little precautious with letting the play develop for those extra hits on the pile, etc. AKA "Quick Whistle"
